Not a 'K' question I'm afraid but but some one who is an electronics guru might be able to answer as the internet has failed me.
I have a small Russian two stroke with 12v direct lighting, no battery. there is some form of solid state resistor in the brake light circuit, presumably, to stop surge blowing the bulb. Three connections power, earth and switch.  It has failed ie no circuit. Can any one point me in the direction of a suitable European alternative? John

Zener diode maybe? I think the battery would be optional in the below diagram The Zener regulates the voltage in this ckt

Solid state resistor Tridiode

I'm with Wilcom. Quite few versions of grey porridge had direct AC lighting with a DC brake light and horn powered direct from the battery. DC (battery) charging was provided by a zener diode - get one for a Triumph Bonneville or similar.

I like the red and blue on Wilcom's diagram - if you put a pair of anaglyph 3D glasses on it jumps out at you.
