I have had a reply from Mrs Rosskko thanking us for thinking of them and some of the family members are keen to make the trip this year. Initial indication is that they will stay overnight in Bathurst on Saturday.

I will stay in touch with them as we zero in on the date and plans come together.

Cheers

We can take our own tucker and I'll supply some Fireball or Jaegermeister in case it gets chilly.
I'd rather  camp there than at O'Connell. The next time I see Sean Kelly I'll probably get myself arrested.
Cheers

I forgot the Kelly factor Sean.

Will see you at Sofala with the other Sirens.

Unsure of my travel plans but interested to seeing everyone on the Sunday.

Lads!

Unfortunately I am unable to attend. A very good friend of ours mother is celebrating her 100th birthday and it would be totally unacceptable if I didn't attend. Still looking forward to a ride, though!

Thanks for the reminder Sean.

I've just emailed Rosskko's family with a suggestion of meeting around 10:30am at the Mt Panorama Visitors Centre at the bottom of Conrod Straight and then riding/driving up around the track to the spot where the memorial stone is located.

Following gathering up there some/all could go back down into town for lunch depending on people's own travel needs.

That time would allow easy run in from Sofala on Sunday morning for those planning to stay there Saturday night and any Sydney based people to get out there (hope that isn't too early a start from the big smoke). The family had earlier indicated they will likely stay overnight in Bathurst on the Saturday night.

Let's start a list of who is planning to attend and maybe where they are staying Saturday or Sunday night if not a day trip.

1. Gaz    (not sure yet of exact travel plans)

Cheers

Good news for all who might attend this gathering.

I have just heard back from Rosskko's family and they are very happy with the times and meeting place as I proposed above and also happy to have lunch together on the Sunday with any who can make it.

So just to confirm;
> Meet at the Mt Panorama Visitors Centre at 10:30am Sunday 26 May 2019
> Ride/drive up to the top of the circuit to where the Rosskko memorial stone is placed
> Head back down into town for lunch with the family

I'll do some research on where 10-20 people might find a reasonable lunch in Bathurst - any suggestions from people who know the town well would be appreciated.

Cheers

Update

1. Gaz  - Tom & I being the old softies that we are have reserved a room at the Old Sofala Gaol (B&B) for Saturday night 25th May. Plan to be at Sofala by 3:00pm. Likely to be found at the pub soon after. We like Saxon 7's idea of heading across to Rylstone on Sunday afternoon - probably stay at the Globe Hotel if we can get a room as we've tried it out before.

My proposed route for the trip down is as follows:
Leave Guyra at 8.30 am, head down New England Hwy, turning off at Willow Tree and taking Merriwa rd to Merriwa. Last trip through this road had 6km of dirt which was being upgraded at the time,(Approx 4 weeks ago).Approx 300km
Continuing from Merriwa to Sofala via Ulon and Mudgee etc. Approx 200km
There are a couple of camping options in Sofala: the one closest to town is very close to the main road. The other, at Greens Pt, is about 6 km out of town but looks much more pleasant. Open to suggestions there. Also open to suggestions in regards to a meeting point in Sofala.
Journey home from Bathurst is to be via Rylestone and Bylong Valley Way and Sandy Hollow etc. This makes a fairly decent loop. Company along the way more than welcome.

Sofala is a pretty quiet place with next to buggerall traffic passing through, camped next the "main" road wouldnt be much of an issue.  Its also where Elle McPherson swam in Sirens.

No idea about Greens Pt, I have a camped at Wallaby Rocks on the Hill End Rd.  Good location if a bit gravelly.

Jolly good,
Will meet you at the " main road" campsite then. Let RossKKo ride with you - Page 2 723598
Hopefully Der Täckler will read this.
The main road campsite, as it is now referred to, is just outside town as you head north in the direction of Mudgee. It's just near a bend in the road and you turn left to gain access. Probably only a couple of hundred metres from the pub if I remember rightly?

As grandparent duties will take me out of this excursion I hope that the weekend goes well. I have given Charlie something for the attendees to consider whilst on and off the mountain. Safe travel to all.

I'm taking a new route for me so am not sure of ETA. Would like to be there by 4pm though so I can throw up a tent etc before dark.

Tom and I have arranged to meet our hostess at the gaol at 3.00pm Saturday arvo. We'll probably lunch at Rylstone on the way over.

So I guess soon after we have keys to our digs we could be found in the vicinity of the pub.

Look forward to catching up with you all (or is that y'all).

Cheers

Fantastic news RT and Waz!

I've just heard from Mrs RossKKo that she has booked us in for lunch at Jack Duggans Irish Pub, 135 George Street, Bathurst.

I recall some of us have been there before including a late arrival from the deep north on a very cold night.

See you on Sunday morning.

Cheers

I can tell you have not been to Sofala Tackler? You said Cafes like you are expecting to find more than one café. It is a very old gold mine town.
Nice little place but not much around.

Looking at the map, it shows a couple of cafes.  Perhaps the photos are out of date?

As I'll be camping, I'll just have bachelor camp food. fresh salad with alfalfa and mung beans with haloumi and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Or possibly beans on toast.

I checked with the accommodation lady at Sofala re dinner on Saturday night and she confirmed our suspicions that the pub does not do meals but advised that Cafe Sofala run by a guy named Ralph will do dinner if there is a group.

I have done a bit of a ring around this morning and the end result is that we have booked for 8 people for 7pm. Apparently he is licensed and does not appreciate diners bringing alcohol with them. The word from the accommodation lady was to allow time to have a few at the pub before going to dinner as she is not sure what his charges for alcohol are like.

See you tomorrow afternoon/night.

Cheers

Well it was just before opening time! I have learnt that the Islay Feis is a big deal with many people (Aussies, Germans, French, Dutch, Polish, Chinese etc) coming back year after year and most tours are fully booked. I chanced my arm and got there early and wormed my way onto the Laphroig tour this morning as an extra!

Big day tomorrow with the Lagavulin open day - for which I do have tickets! Then the long ride home...

Sorry we couldn't join you all on the mountain toady .
We did manage a small toast to Rosskko at the Bikers Biggest Morning Tea , at the Grey Gum Cafe ,
before the Rosskko flask was handed over to Michael for the conveyance to Mount Panorama, who had travelled on the old "Rosskko K100 Nekkid"  . Thanks Michael .

Seen here are AL58 ( Alan Pennykid ) , Mrs P ( Marie) , Michael , and Ed.

I arrived back at home base around mid-day after a terrific weekend travelling over to Bathurst to meet up with fellow forum members and RossKKo's family to remember our friend. The family turned out in force (and I think outnumbered the forum members) to get their first look at the remembrance plaque that we placed at Mt Panorama and all agreed that his spirit has the best seat in the house at that great motor racing venue.

After toasting and some quiet reflection on great memories we all adjourned down into Bathurst to enjoy lunch together before heading off on our various homeward journeys.

Thanks for the company of those who overnighted in Sofala and Rylstone with me and all who made the trip. As you can see from Ed's post above, RossKKo was also remembered by those who could not be at Bathurst. A special thanks from me to Michael who so thoughtfully rode the ex-RossKKo K100 up and brought the flask for presentation to the family. RossKKo's daughters spoke to me about how nice it was to have that bike there yesterday.

BAE came in for special mention from afar, in passing on his regards and his first trip to Oz using the RossKKo K100. The family reminded us of how special that event was to RossKKo.

I was very lazy over the weekend in not taking photos but lots of the members did their bit in recording the weekend and I'm sure there will be plenty of posts to follow.

Cheers

Arrived home about an hour ago after a very emotional remembrance on  Mt Panorama. It was fantastic to meet so many of RossKKo's family and meet up with other forum member's again.

Thank you Michael for arriving on RossKKo's old naked K100 which BAE had previously used on one of visits to Oz. Also thank you for the FLASK which is now in Klompy's hands??

Our return trip home was uneventful and without white knuckle moments..

Cheers
Tom
