I had a chat to Olaf the other day, he is thinking that he and Will might be coming this way for their visit in the beginning of September this year.
We have such a great time when they visit so I thought that we should share it with a wider audience. This is my proposal: Will and Olaf will probably come for a week or so, but this idea could stretch over a couple of weeks if there was interest, with people arriving and departing as they wish. We are in an ideal situation to almost guarantee the weather will be good and not too hot, and we are central to anyone who would want to come from Spain, France, UK or even Germany.
What is on offer is nothing more than an informal meet up with loads of things to do. There is no cost apart from what you eat and your campsite fees. We do the tour guiding because we want to show people this area with an insider knowledge of the best places to eat and the nice things to do, it is not a business!
There is no need to promise attendance, pay any booking fees or anything. Just come if and when you want. Those of you who have never toured France before can get together and help each other. Others are welcome to contact me for routes etc. If you want a pitch at the campsite reserved then I can do that for you, each pitch holds 3 or 4  two man tents.
If your wife/girlfriend wants to attend with you but does not fancy the ride down, then we can pick them up from Bergerac or Brive airport (in the car) for them to just do the riding around here with you. Remember though that we can't be guiding a rideout at the same time as collecting from airports, unless she is arriving with her lid on so the rideout will be to the airport!

That is an excellent idea.

But we are planning on our time being 2 weeks.......

For those who have never been camping, to France or simply gone travelling I cannot recommend this highly enough. Not far there is a rather nice hotel.

Will and I have been down to BobT a few times and have had an absolutely wonderful time down at the camp site on the river at St Leon sur Vezere, an amazing little village with great places around it. A walk along the riverbank path to a place to eat, or enjoy a wine, cook up our own bbqs, showers/toilets etc. Bob and Jude's hospitality is quite amazing and brilliant company. A great place to enjoy or chill out.

From Roscoff or Cherbourg one overnight is needed, Will and myself have done it with sometimes one and sometimes 2 overnight camps.

Even better is if anyone comes across from Belgium/Netherlands/Germany/Austria/Spain its only a one overnight somewhere too. As Bob has said no need to book anything, just turn up.

Now BobT and Jude did sort of hatch a plan to get some Christmas pudding for next Christmas so this will travel with us. It may be September but rest assured there will be a Christmas pudding night on this trip with a BBQ. We have left a BBQ down there for such occasions and Will's lardons are second to none.

Chocolat hope you can make this one too........

How about from Alicante?

How about a few more Eccentrics?

Two weeks is great Olaf. I was offering to stretch that out so that I commit for about 4 weeks and then bikers come and go as they please with the offer of rideouts and stuff there for the whole four week period. That way anyone who turns up at any time within that period will enjoy the company of others.

Meeting in France St_leo10

Just for anyone who does not use Facebook, this picture shows the village of St Leon with the proposed campsite outlined in red.
You can swim in the river if you wish - ask Will as he has done it.

Fingers crossed K is now mostly sorted with a full rear end job done from rear crankshaft main seal back including a new clutch friction plate [original was still in it and was down to last 5,000 miles], all new seals to gearbox, clutch pivot rod bearings boot etc, new driveshaft boot, gear position indicator switch, spline lubes [all were in great condition thanks to the oil leaking everywhere], exhaust studs/nuts sorted [no exhaust gaskets were there to come out!!] later stand assembly, throttle body balancing, TPS sorted, new brake switches, new radiator cooling fan, all fluids done.

Heat shield needed now, repaint rear frame and fit hazard switch and that's it for another few years. Water pump, full brakes overhaul and head bearings done 2014. Alternator monkey nuts and starter done 2015.

Looking forward to lots more miles on it......

A bit of advice for K owners, not out of vanity. Take the exhaust off once a year to polish up the headers. Simply means your studs and nuts will be kept in good order. I was lucky, a lot of WD 40 on them over time meant we had no problems, 6 studs came out, the other 2 the nuts unscrewed. Replacements were to hand and are cheap enough. No idea when the exhaust was last off but not in my ownership.

Good news today in some ways. I had someone interested in going along but today he told me he was not going to travel. I am keen to get 2 good weekends there so my plan now is to take the ferry Rosslare to Roscoff on Wednesday 6th September and arrive St Leon afternoon Friday 8th September.

88 is likely to travel down Sunday 10th September, Irish Ferries afternoon Oscar Wilde Rosslare to Roscoff.

Looks like 88 and myself will travel back Irish Ferries Oscar Wilde on Thursday 21st September, depart Cherbourg 9.30pm.

Hi Chocolate

Post 1 on this thread was BobT saying about welcoming visitors. Will [88] and myself met BobT and his wife through the forum and in 2014 and again in 2015, we camped down his way after he recommended the area. I used to go camping west of Bordeaux so knew the route down very well. BobT and Jude have also met quite a few others on the forum, including CrazyFrog!!!

In between Will has been down a few times on his own.

I am not much into electronic gadgetry and satnavs but if you look up the map of south west France you will find Bordeaux, east of it is Perigueux. Going south east of Perigueux about 7km you will find Rouffignac St Cernin de Reilhac and further 7 km or so on the river La Vezere you will find St Leon sur Vezere which is where the camp site is. Its a nice municipal site, excellent toilet/shower facility, best pitches are beside the river bank, level, and they will take 4 tents, river is used for keeping beer and wine chilled.

I am planning to get to there about 8th September and I guess Will should make it along for Tuesday 12th September but we will probably leave about Tuesday 19/Wednesday 20th for 9.30pm Ferry back to Rosslare on Thursday 21st.

I will be very far west from Germany and will travel down the Atlantic coast. We had friends used to travel over from Berlin to Bordeaux using motorail......that would get you there quickly if its still running. Not sure how your time out works but I think you would love it. What part of Germany would you be travelling from?

Best not tell BobT how well you know Cork.....

I cannot recommend this trip highly enough, we have had some great visits and rides. Guess if you took a week off and left home on a Friday it would work for you.......

Hello Olaf!

Just read this Threat.
When are you where??? Dates
Are you passing Germany?

Give me some places where you stay and the dates and I will see if can join you.

Cheers
Yes CHocolate where are you? I lived in Germany for many years, Dusseldorf, Hamm, Nienburg-Weser, Bielefeld area and more. We have German friends down here as I speak fluent German (German mother). You are welcome to join us in September, but if you can't make it then we are here all the year round. You could even visit on your Ducati as we have three of those too.

Thanks Bob!

Nienburg isn't far away from Bremen, where I grew up.
The river Weser is connecting :-)
Now I live in Kassel. My Ducati is a M796 but I prefer my two K 75.

A date from Olaf would be nice, I could see if I meet somewhere on the road. I'll think about coming to France, thanks.

Cheers

That will be Hansestadt Bremen then. I used to live near Hansestadt Kings Lynn in England but they never called it that anymore.
My mothers family are from up that direction.
You don't work for Airbus do you? I considered looking for a job with them in Bremen or Hamburg before I decided to retire and come down here.

Hansestadt Bremen is right. Not working for Airbus, but in IT.
I should also decide to retire.

My plan at the moment is to go Cork Roscoff Saturday 2nd September, 4pm from Cork arrive Roscoff 7am Sunday morning. €81 if I skip a cabin or €123 with a 2 berth cabin. Two bikes and a cabin would be €192 for the one way. Coming back will travel Cherbourg to Rosslare with Will, 9.30pm Thursday 21 September.

My route down is about 650km or so and likely to be

Roscoff
Rennes **
Nantes **
Niort**
Cognac/Angouleme
PerigueUx **
St Leon sur Vezere.

A good day could be done to arrive about 6.30pm on Sunday 3rd after allowing for planned stops at services  along the way **. Been to them all before. Will and myself have also camped at Rennes and Cognac on stopovers. About 8 hours ride time plus stops.

I remember them, well we got to see the amphitheatre but not the villa.

I am planning a decent time away and not planning to have to do 500km every day. St Leon camp site is a really nice place to chill out. Then add some nice runs out to Plazac, Sarlat, maybe across to Cap Ferret would appeal to me.

I actually love the run down from Roscoff, especially in summer when its globe artichokes all along the start then it morphs into horizon to horizon sunflowers below Nantes and then into vineyards. Done it often enough to know the services stops to aim for.....like when Will and myself cooked hot dogs at one of them....

Not sure what it will be like in September as in sunflowers will have passed but either way it will be nice as in not too hot. 35-40C in Italy last July was a bit much for me even though it was stunning there.

If Wills plans work out he will be down Sunday 10th September.

Anyone coming over weekend of Friday 15th September would be great but anytime is good.

For the record a request was made by Bob and Jude for Christmas puddings which I will most likely be bringing. One will be reserved for a bbq get together at St Leon. We also will have some Eccentric marmalade which goes particularly well with soft boiled egg and fresh croissants.

As you are well aware the French do not know what marmalade is, yet, when jude makes it and gives away jars, they love it.
I have no doubt that there will still be some left in September and you will have a choice of flavours, we have Whiskey, Armagnac and bitter almond flavours at the moment.
Would be nice if we could get some Germans to participate, I have not used my German much since I lived there. A bit embarrassing as I am half German.

Nearer the time might manage to meet Chocolate around Nantes or Niort along the way. Niort is on the A10 down from Paris [I know you know that but others might not] and a good pace for meeting up.

You need to use your German more. K00 is a good dialect.

Niort would make a very long journey from Paris to here! Most sane people would come down the (free) A20 to Limoges and then Brive.

Ah yes.....but a little further detour to Cap Ferret was going to be added to that. Niort to Royan/Hourtin/Lacanau/Claouey to Cap Ferret then to Brive is a nice route......been trying to get a rerun of that and might make it this year.

Hi lads,

been quiet for a while for various reasons but hope to get my RT back by the end of this week (we are in the hands of the god of spray painters Sad )
The trip sounds very good to both me and Ditte, just have to work on the dates as Björnsdóttir starts secondary school in September and we need to be here for the beginning - so probably won't be able to join Olaf on the 2nd but may come a few days later if it's OK with Bob. Depends on how I can arrange my mum to come over and mind the cubs.

And no problem there if we want to turn the conversation to German - unless Olaf has some difficulties with that Smile . Although I was taken for French in Lidl a few days ago at the checkout (trolley full of French delicacies i.e. snails with garlic butter) so all I need now is to learn the language.

You are most welcome to come along, would love to see you there. I booked Cork Roscoff for Saturday 2nd September. My plans are loose enough, can possibly go straight to St Leon off the ferry but more likely set up camp either La Rochelle or Cognac as it's a nice break point. There isn't much difference in the travel times, La Rochelle is interesting to wander.

I have a thought, weather permitting to head south on the coast to Royan and take the ferry at that point and go down to Cap Ferret [NOT Ferrat as someone else did when I arranged to meet there] and maybe camp there for a night. The fishing villages at Claouey and Le Petit Piquey are real gems, Lacanau brings back lots of memories too. Then from there across to Bordeaux, Bergerac and St Leon. If weather is good that is a great route and Ditte would like it too I am sure.

If you are going from Rosslare you more likely will be at Cherbourg. Talk to Will/88 about that as he has done that a few times. We went back through Cherbourg but both times went via Nantes and Rennes. Ferry back varies in time but quite a few are 9.30pm departures so allow for a good days travel.

I struggle to see how someone could assume you were French.....

Probably the blue eyes and pale skin were misleading her Smile , am I not a typical mediterranean, even by the build? LOL

Thanks for text BTW to let me know this is happening. Weather in Dordogne should be OK for camping even for me... I have to check what holidays are can take - September is generally worse than summertime as school bus drivers / inspectors cease coming in so it's all up to us again. Try my best though. Once I know my dates I will arrange with either yourself or Will - it would be nice to go with someone who knows the way already.

Bjorn,

Will is planning to fly down but we have various options.

One is that if we are down there we can go to meet you somewhere along the way. Between Angouleme and Perigueux there is a place called Brantome that BobT is always telling us about. You will get that far quite easily.

I have no firm commitments or arrangements as in reservations, apart from the ferry over to France on 2nd September and of course would be ditte lighted if you make that one!

Update time.....

Ferry booked......

Bjorn and Ditte looking like they will make it. Fingers crossed. We had a camping trip to Kilkenny weekend before last and Will joined us for bbq. In fact the stove never got used but our little charcoal bbq that travels on the K did all the cooking. Interestingly the lardons didn't shrink/disappear either.

I have had a few contacts from UK based riders who are likely to be in the region too and 'may drop in'. I will keep in touch on this.

Last few jobs being done to K.......decided next weekend will be a bike weekend to do a coolant change, fit a new temp sensor and a sprag clutch clean out.

Olaf, I still have one of your BBQs down here in my garage.
If anyone is coming down and thinks that there is something that they might need while here then give me the heads up. I have a garage and plenty of tools should any maintenance be needed.
I have the car should anyone want their other halfs to be collected from Bergerac airport while they ride down on their own.
I have contacts all over the place should you want a hotel/b&b instead of camping. I know all the best places to eat. We have also visited every interesting place around here and will happily guide any ride outs that you want.
I am quite happy to ask any newbie touring questions that Olaf doesn't know the answer to.

I won't have all the answers about touring questions and trust me BobT knows the best places and routes. It's great for chill out or trips out.

Not planning on bringing a bbq but we might buy a second one.....and a ton of charcoal.....

Update....ferry sorted. Will due to get ferry Saturday 9th, St Leon evening of Monday 11th. I hope to be down late Monday 4th or not too late Tuesday 5th.

Sort of hoping we get same pitch as last time, it also has electricity available and we will go for that too.

I need some work time and will be fine at the tent. Means an extension lead and cable, have one to bring and have the blue outdoor plug here too for connecting to the camp site electrical box. I don't have electronic gadgets like iPhone and Satnav so one needs to bring your charger......

The single pitch will take 3 tents and the tarp, we can add second pitch as we need.

I have enough contacts to reserve any pitch that you want! I'll sort it for you.
Chargers will be no problem.
Free internet all over I know many passwords for many cafes.

I sort of decided to bring the tarp and poles along as last time as it worked out really well. It's a bit more weight but think it will be fine. Any other items we can get down there and add another bbq to the one that's there. Its actually given me an idea maybe we should be buying you one of these plastic patio sets, the ones with the 4 chairs!!

Other than that all looks good.

If its ok with you might post some of the stuff down....

Sent a few emails to those who are on my list for this...

Chocolat, if you are still on maybe drop me a pm to send me your email address and I will copy you in. No worries if you are not fully sorted, at least you will know what's happening.

BobT has been incredibly generous in all this too, will be great to meet up again.
