Hi all. New to the BMW community. I recently purchased a 1990 K100RS. Looking forward to riding the new-to-me bike once the snow melts.

Welcome from a little further east of you. No snow here and we ride all year.

Good to see you along and looking forward to a few photos.

If you go to the home page [portal] you will find a link to what to do if you have just bought a K bike. Have a look at that and also feel free to ask any questions. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. We enjoy a little banter too as you will see around the forum.

Thanks Olaf. I am jealous of your year round riding season. I can busy myself during the winter hibernation with a few small repairs; the bike needs both tires replaced and possibly the fork seals. I might tackle the brake lines too....I suspect that they are as old as the bike. It has 114,000 km on the clock but starts up and runs OK. I am sure that I can get lots of help here on the forum when I have questions.

Well my brother lived in Swiss Alps for many years. He always said he never saw rain for six months of the year, just snow and that was always dry. He never learned to drive and never owned a mechanically propelled vehicle but has a fair collection of manically propelled vehicles bicycles, skis, etc and hats rain in winter like we get, even if we can go out all year.

Since you are in hibernation there are a few more things you should look at. The 114,000 km is nothing for a K. Do pop up a photo because there are some significant changes over the times the models were produced.

Replace the fuel lines between the tank and injector rail and fuel pressure regulator [FPR]. There are 3 of them and you need the bottom half of the airbox off from the right hand side to access the FPR. A few on/off tank sessions will crack old lines and the fuel is under pressure.

Lots of posts on the forum about electrical connections so its always recommended to open up and clean them, just do them one by one and you wont have head scratching issues.

There are some fantastic posts and threads here so keep us all posted and someone will direct you to them or send you links.

Welcome!  That 1990 is a nice machine that is just out of the break in period.

Do check out the article about what to do with a new brick.  It's good you have some time to work on the bike before riding season starts.  You will have a good opportunity to get all the maintenance up to date.

While there should be minimal mechanical wear, you are correct to give all the rubber bits a close look.  German rubber is horrible expensive, but trying to make do with marginal parts is false economy.

The members here have found many alternative parts sources and supplies that can save you a fair bit of expense, so don't hesitate to search the forum or ask questions.

Thanks to the great people who sent me the welcome notes. Looks like I am in good company with lots of support only a few key strokes away.
I'll be sure to send up a flare when I need some assistance getting my new ride in top shape for the season ahead.
In the meantime, stay warm!

Welcome Woodro,

About the fork seals, get the genuine ones from BMW. It seems that the after market or industrial ones are not lasting on the bike.
You are only 2 hours swimming away from me and if you come to NS, let me know and we can meet for a ride and a Timmy. lol!
