I am going to change a cam chain or 2 on the K-Pox Kollection. While I haven't done it on a K, I've done enough others not to be worried about the process.

What I am a little confused about is what should be included in a cam chain kit! The usual suspects obviously have different ideas:

  • Moto Bins - Timing Chain, Upper Slide Rail, Vertical Guide Rail, Cover Oil Seal (Picture on website not working)

  • Motor Works - Chain, 3 guide rails, 1 E clip, cam cover gasket (from picture)

  • Munich Motorcycles, West Oz - Chain, 3 guide rails, 2 E clips, T cover gasket, cover oil seal. (From picture)

James Sherlock doesn't offer a kit, just individual parts.

Those who have done the deed, what should I make sure I have ready?

I am assuming (hoping?) the tensioner itself and bottom metal rail it pushes on won't need changing, so won't buy them unless necessary due to their cost.

Thanks,

Bill

G'day Bill, I am about to embark on the  same process for the 75. I am also a little confused. What I am about to order from Motorworks is the Kit which includes:- top guide  ,vertical guide, Chain, bottom guide and valve cover gaskets. As well, I am about to order rubber gaskets for the cam cover bolts and the two guide retaining circlips. Don't know about the E clips though.
Holister recently replaced the timing chain bits on his RS, so he would have more info.
Hope you are travelling well and looking forward to seeing you home in about 3 weeks. Cheers Tom

bottom rail for sure,  plus the clips (just in case), chain  +  timing seal to crankshaft  .....but don't forget to lynish the shaft that it fits to ...(will bed in the new seal properly )

obviously if the top and side rails are worn ...that might only show up on disassembly

don't forget , depending on the year of the cam chain tensioner build you may find that the earliest design may have some wear on the sharkstooth anti rotation gears ...and just be slipping to and fro ...giving a false indication of the cam chain wear ...noise

just some notes from me

Sure 🤡
https://www.k100-forum.com/t10758-rattly-timing-chain#128552

I'm going to do the chain and guides on the 1100 as soon as I get parts from motorworks if you're interested. Or I'll come and provide some support when you do yours if you want.

There are no issues with mine,  just couldn't see anything in the service records that it'd been done and she's done 130k now.

At 160k the guides on my old girl K100 were very worn... see link above.

Bill, its not difficult but the manuals are a little scant on detail so I made notes when I did my old girl. I'll PM you.
I ordered the kit from Motorworks plus the securing clip for the top rail. Motorworks #ENA64963. Which is part #14 in the explodedview on realoem. I read somewhere that it should be replaced.

Sounds like a good idea to me if Tom can wait till I return from the land of frogs and snails.

Charlie, thanks for the confirmation. It did seem strange to me that the one item under constant pressure wasn't in the Moto Bins kit!

Thanks, Nigel, for the link to the audio.

Bill

Update:

I ordered the Motobins kit and the bottom guide.

When I got them, I opened the kit and found that the bottom guide was indeed included in the kit, despite the description on the website. Since I ordered 2 kits (Don't forget I have K-Pox), I now have 2 spare bottom guides and spent £10 more than I needed to.

I have the promise of a discount on my next order, so I'll see what that works out to be.

Bill

that's a bugger Bill. They should've seen the double up.

I order my gear from Motorworks but their kit doesn't include the front crankshaft seal so my Old Girl K100 didn't get that replaced. All's good tho.
Sweet Thing K1100 had a tiny bit of oil misting under the timing cover so I replaced the seal on her. The top guide and the side guide are different on the 1100 and I found I had to remove the camshaft drive sprockets to get the chain and top and side guides off and new ones back on.

Resetting the tensioner is easy once you work out how it works.

cheers

The kit was in a non transparent padded bag, so the person who packed the order can't be blamed. Responsibility lies with the person who put the kit contents data out to the web master, and didn't organise a photo.

There are worse problems people have to deal with, so it's not a biggie.

Thanks for the PM info, Nigel.

Bill
