Just a heads up, this time of year in Guyra can still get cold, hopefully not wet.

As we have the 'luxury' of time, the weather's improved dramatically since Victoria's glorious springtime rains last week and over the weekend, we thought we'd just stay out and turn up at Guyra. It makes no sense to ride back to Logan Village on Thursday, only to turn round Friday and backtrack six-plus hours.
See you mob either Friday night or Saturday morning early. We're on for the table at Grafton. Pamela and I look forward to meeting those we've missed in past rides.

We're stopped in Gloucester at the Roundabout Inn after a short day brought to a slowdown by a headlight switch that karked it. Thanks to the brothers Grabau we fit a spare Tom had and by two PM we were on the road again. I must mention that he rode up from Newcastle with the spare. What a gent.

Uli and I had exhausted our technical skills with gaffers tape, snipped plastic lengths of the guts of a Biro (ballpoint pen) springs behind the bearing, even DeOxit on the metal bits, to no avail.

On my switch the on/off slider had no detent. The small bearing wasn't sitting proud and the light would flash intermittently. I wondered the day earlier why some cars were pulling to the roadside as we approached! Red bike, flashing light, must be firies! 👍😏

I've got the Rosskko flask with something peaty, boggy and tasty inside. Sips all round!

More thanks to Tom for his hospitality this evening. We join our guide (Rickmeister) tomorrow morning to travel the 2 day scenic route to smithy's place.

Was able to show RT his old bike courtesy of a detour to Robertson on the way up. The low fat bun accompanying the koffee was lovely. Thanks, Bob and Sharon.

I am sorry to say I will not be able to attend this weekend despite the huge hospitality offer from Smithy and the chance to meet those who have only been text for so long :O) and reaquaint with the Northerners.

Happy to say that the magnificent photo taken by Captain Hollister  ( 3 RS's at Harry's Wooloomooloo ) has made the front cover of the BMW Touring Magazine for November and despite my offer to autograph copies they admired the quality and content of the photo...or art as I would call it but were not excited by my celebrity status.

Now as you may know my K1100 LT is reduced to half a bike whilst I build up enough courage to remove ABS2/gearbox and replace rear main and clutch stuff....meanwhile the K100RS has spat its rear master cylinder and idling at 1500 so a little TLC needed as she deserves it..and perhaps just letting me know that she wants to stay home this weekend, while I carry out tasks set by home command.....I wish you all excellent ride, drink and stories and will catch up in due course....apparently when retired you can do anything anytime....wooowooo bring it on.

Cheers KKlompy

tis sad to hear Klompy , many K's to ride but none to get you there .
Maybe Australias biggest Toy Run could provide a jaunt for yourself and a few of the krew in the leadup to Xmas.
Just saw today they are looking for gullible youngsters ( at heart) to form a couple of tug o war teams .
Also a +1 to Kptn Holister for his kreative pic of the 3 K's at Harrys . Well done Nigel .

Hey Klompy. Pity they didn't ask. I could've given them a higher resolution pic for the mag cover.

FYI. I'll be pulling the back end off my 1100RS to do the main seal on the w/e of 12-13 Nov if you'd like to come and check it out.

Cheers to everyone heading up to Guyra for the Northern Tablelands Run at Smithy's. Wish I was coming but I'm otherwise indisposed except for short day runs till Xmas. Hope you all have a ball. sunny

Rick G, Charlie, TacKler and I headed north up the New England highway under clear skies after an amazing gathering of like-minded K riders at the bucolic home of Smitty and Kay. Chaz and TacKler peeled off as Rick, Pamela and I stopped in Stanthorpe for a quick hello and cuppa with Rick's wife Marg.

Saying goodbyes we took off for Brissie. Not twenty kilometres from Stanthorpe we hit a jolting bump just after overtaking a car and slow-moving VStrom. In an instant the rear suspension settled down against the tyre and the scent of melting plastic and burnt rubber filled my nostrils. I pointed the front end towards the hard shoulder and slowed. The shockie stud had snapped off a thread below the surface.

Out came the mobile phone and quick call was made to Rick. In fifteen minutes he was there to survey the problem. His brother had his trailer and lived 400 metres away. Ten minutes later, after I'd removed the Z frame and tidied up the final drive, we had the bike tied down and were rolling towards Rick's shed.

An hour later we'd Easy Outed the busted stud, cleaned up the threads, and had a piece of threaded 12mm bar fitted. It's good to go, but it was late so we stayed in Stanthorpe.

All trip long I've been thinking with envy about those neat triangular brackets a lot of Aussies utilise on their Monolever and Paralever final drives to support the shockie stud. Aussie roads are generally rougher than most other country's roads. My next project is to fit the device to my RS. For now we're able to continue thanks to timing, we'll placed friends and good fortune.

Thanks to all who made this Tablelands ride a success, in spite of the rain and our minor inconvenience.

Good to hear it was no worse Daz and you were able to get going quick enough. Enjoy your stay in Stanthorpe.
Hit a pothole myself last weekend that shook the bike something fierce. I was in a hard corner at the time and the bike did a bit of a sideways flip as the back wheel came out of the hole. She recovered very quickly. Testament to the well designed K1100 frame and suspension. Cheers

First of all a huge thank you to Smithy and Kay for again hosting this event. The weekend was fantastic despite a bit of rain. Gaz, Bill and I headed down the old New England and had an uneventful run home. Good to see some familiar faces again such as Tackler, Bill, Charlie and others. Thanks again. Cheers Tom

What a great time with great Kompany. Smile

TWB, a bit of a wimp-out doing a proper repair after trailering to a friendly workshop. Rickmeister will tell you that the proper method to repair the broken stud is to cut out some convenient fence wire and tie it up with that. Good for quite a few kilometres, wasnt it Rick?Wink

Smithy and Kay, my voice of thanks is added to the chorus. Great venue, great hospitality. Great ride organisation as well.

RT, BOB the Blue Old Bike did me proud on its first big outing in my ownership. (Once the sabotaged luggage rack had been welded up.) I think the aftermarket screen does an even better job than the standard one for keeping the rain off me.

Valuable as the advice and skill sharing is on this forum, its second to the kameraderie and fellowship of the people I meet. Thanks, everyone.

Bill

Dear All,

Arrived home today at 15:30. Left Chez Smith on Sunday morning, got to the servo at Guyra, checked the phone and there was a message from the Grafton police. Someone had handed in a Canon camera that was left lying around somewhere. The gendarmes, in their cleverness, looked at the pictures that were on the camera, found one that included the Battlestar Galactica (my new R1200RT), and from the number plate managed to find my contact number. Sherlock Holmes, eat your heart out! Managed to contact Bill (Indian), the owner of the camera, and hopefully, all is well.

Headed north, through Glen Innes, Tenterfield and then west along the Bruxner Hwy, stopping at Bonshaw and lunch at Texas, in sunny Queensland. Averaged some pretty high speeds along that stretch...Battlestar Galactica is amazingly stable in all sorts of road conditions and speeds. Headed south to Yetman, Warialda and stopped at Bingara...v.tired after sharing Tackler's Beenleigh rum the previous night.

Rained on Sunday night and this morning. Bit the bullet and headed west across the Kaputar range to Narrabri, in drizzle and fog. White knuckle moment!!!...bopping along, numerous flood dip crossings, eventually hit one that was about 20m long, filled with wet slushy gravel and mud about 12" deep! All I could do was keep it straight, feet up in the air and a steady throttle. BSG behaved perfectly!

Then the mind numbing, boring slog down the Kamilaroi to the New England and home.

Thanks to Kay (K1) and Smithy for their great hospitality major effort to accommodate us all. Looking forward to next year.

Rickmeister.

An enjoyable weekend with the only bad side being the rain which may have been a blessing to the locals, so cannot really complain.

I had a rather interesting ride down as I left after work and arrived at midnight my time but 1:00am local.  Found a spare slot in the garage and a free mattress and a struggling to sleep Rick.  Although trying to keep the noise down Charlie pops his head up and decides to keep me company while I attacked the rum after a wet and cold run down.  He found a beer and we chatted, finally hitting the sack at 2:30am local.  (For the northerners they have daylight saving in NSW which with an extra hour of sunlight a day causes the curtains to fade .......blah, blah.) On the way out I was stopped by the local fuzz about five minutes from Haus Smith and breath tested.  Makes me feel safe drunken

So after a few hours of sleep it was on the road and a ride north and then into Grafton for lunch after a stop at Raspberry Falls for a photo opportunity.  Rain on the way back and the compulsory stop at Ebor where I had to temporarily repair the fairing on the S after a screw dislodged itself. Out with the specially prepared Marakesh Red duct tape (Instant airframe to you Air Force chaps) which Charlie used the next day but I will let him explain that one.  A quick stop at Ebor Falls and onwards to Haus Smith where I eventually fell in behind Tom with his open top box.  As we were nearly home I thought the damage is done and had not seen anything on the road but Gaz will come up with the story of the disappearing hat trick.

The rain was out again and a wet night ensued but under the cover of the shed.  Attacking the rum again with the assistance of RickMeister I had a relatively early night but in an effort to empty the bottle I required a little more sleep on Sunday morning.  It was a slow start for all concerned as I think everyone just wanted to enjoy the kompany as long as possible.

Anyway, the sun was out and it promised to be a pleasant ride home.  A pair of singed socks later and I was ready to go.  Departing with Rick, Charlie, Daz and Pamela we headed north again but took a shortcut to the highway.  We attempted to stop for a pie at Deepwater but the bakery was closed.  So Tenterfield was the next option and lunch took us to a café on the main street.  On to Stanthorpe and separating with the others, Charlie and I headed north and a wise decision by Charlie was to take a break at the rest stop south of Wawick where we recharged our batteries in the slowly warming day.  I was starting to feel the lack of sleep over the weekend and the rest definitely prevented me from becoming another statistic.

Over the range for a top up at Aratula where it had warmed and Charlie and I separated at Beaudesert and on to home.  An uneventful ride home but for me a fairly full on weekend.  Incidentally on the way down I was hit buy a few hailstones just south of Warwick and Gaz had a similar tale north of Tamworth.

So really good to catch up with the Krew, especially Bill (thanks for the maps) and Tom (yay, another 75S).  My thanks to all concerned for attending and special thanks to Kay and Kraig for their hospitality.

With the Tablelands ride over for another year Kay and myself would like to thank everyone for making the journey here in such doubtful weather conditions, it seems every year the K bikes whip up a storm or two.
We had a top weekend with great company that included meeting TWB and he's lovely lady Pamela
( sorry to hear about the pot hole drama on your journey north) and the rest of the krew that could make it, as always a great catch up.
Saturday ride day to the Jacaranda City was good fun. Our first stop was the Super Strawberry at Glen Innes for coffee and skones. We continued on to Raspberry lookout, before the ride down the mountain and into Grafton for lunch at the Crow Hotel on the Clarence River.
A quick photo or two in the purple rain of the Jacaranda trees and it was time to leave as storms were building, and yep we had to stop and get the rain gear on for the run up the mountain. Despite the wet it was still a super fun ride up to Ebor for a coffee stop, and to check out Ebor falls.
Back in Guyra in time to light the fire and settle in for a few drinks and tales of the days adventures, a good 440 km day ride.

Damn you guys know how to put on a good ride .
Well needless to say I had the chance to join in , but chose to be under advice from home office that weather conditions were less than favourable. especially once checking the radars for possible forecasts . Predicted thunderstorms and showers across the region all weekend .
So with no brownie points to barter with , I obeyed the one who should be.
After the continued rain we've been enduring for these past months , I hope the falls provided some great pics .
Not only did I miss the fantastic scenery Smithy has on offer as you ride the Tablelands , but you forgoe the opportunity of what the Krew experience as exceptional hospitality and fellowship amongst many likeminded riders .
Good to see you all made the best of it regardless of the weather.
As hoped the Jacarandas were still in full bloom . Well done Smithy and Kay .

Hi All, I'm a bit slow getting to the keyboard to add my thanks to Smithy and Kay for hosting the weekend yet again as there were some chores around the homestead that required my urgent attention this morning since I was only home for two days after the week away on the Phillip Island trip with Waz before I mounted up again to head to Guyra.

I left home just after 1:00pm on Friday afternoon for the 400km run up to Smithy's. As I tracked north the storm clouds were building out to the north-west and by the time I got to Moonbi, which is the start of the climb up the mountains to the New England Tableland, they were inky black directly up ahead so I pulled into the shelter of a service station to don my wet weather gear. As I parked the bike a fellow rider came across to me and asked if I was heading north and when I nodded in the affirmative the reply was "Forget it! have a cup of coffee and wait a fair while before you go up there."

He had not long before come down the mountain and said he was lucky to survive the hail storm, just managing to keep upright by closely following a slow moving vehicle and riding in it's wheel tracks. His blue heeler cattle dog had it's own drizone coat and goggles and sat on a pad on the tank of the Guzzi Adventure bike - a nice touch that I noticed when he departed was the registration plate "DOGGY".

So coffee and a 45 minute wait it was before I decided to give it a go - quite a number of local police cars parked at intervals along the climb with lights flashing as a warning. Nearing the top there was a truck that had lost traction and slid to the side and the ice drifts along the roadsides and covering the paddocks were probably 200mm deep. A creek beside the road at the top had turned into a raging torrent - a flash flood heading downstream. The wait was the best bit of advice I've had in a while.

Continuing north along the New England Highway I was entertained by trying to work out which of the numerous storm cells that were coming my way would actually intersect my path. Approaching Armidale I decided that I could not avoid the next one so I detoured off the highway into town and took shelter under the first awning I could find just as the rain started to power down. The guy whose business awning I was parked under came out and said "Good luck, I'm off - it's closing time". Since it looked like another wait I got some food nearby and sat it out watching the rain radar on my phone.

Once the worst had passed over Armidale I looked at the radar and worked out that the big mass of rain over the Guyra area would have moved east by the time I got there so off I went again into the night. Wrong! The drizzle at Armidale when I left just got heavier all the way to Smithy's and once I was through Guyra onto the road to Smithy's it was a very slow 20km with visibility almost nil. But the wet weather gear held up well and the welcoming smiles and warm fire made the trip up an adventure rather than a test.

As all above have commented, a big thanks to Smithy and Kay for allowing most of us to sleep in the garage or in the house and as always their hospitality was top shelf.

Saturday was an enjoyable day and as Tackler mentioned I had a bit of a diversion on the way back along Guyra road. Tom was ahead of me on the road and as I got closer to him I noticed his top box was open so I moved up a bit closer waiting for a section of straight flat road so I could zoom up beside and alert him. Before that occurred his black Guinness Cap flew out of the top box so I wacked on the brakes and turned around as soon as it was safe to go back to collect it. Luckily it had landed on the road and once gathered up I set off back in pursuit. Now my GPS told me I could take a minor road back to Smithy's so I peeled off down this narrow fairly rough sealed road thinking I might even get back before them - 10kms or so further on the road was continuing to deteriorate, the rain getting heavier and then I come to a sign that says "Gravel Road - No through road" - bloody GPS!

So back track and on to Smithy's the usual way - late as usual. Tackler probably wondered where I had got to as I was between Tom and him when we left the falls. Smithy wised me up with some local knowledge about the "No through road" sign and in fact you can get through there to his place - bloody GPS is smarter than I gave it credit.

Another very social evening and a round of goodbyes on Sunday morning rounded off a memorable weekend despite/because of the weather. Good company with Bill and Tom on the uneventful run home. Arrived at home base about 4:00pm.

Cheers

Great accounts, pictures and adventures - thanks for sharing y'all.

Real shame about the inclement weather, but sounds like it added to the story rather than spoiling it for you all and,  ultimately, the kamaraderie shone through.

thanks smithy ..was yet another great meet of the krew , at somewhere closer for me to visit with the guys from south of here .
yet again you have made a spectacular hosting event  with fantastic support to a hungry and interesting group of blokes , also thanks to warren and kay and his mate gary for making the support of the event so  easy for all of us ,and joining in .

for rick and myself (travelling together from near the queensland border , we arrived at smithys  narrowly missing a huge storm passing through the district , for us a dry ride in taking the shot cut through the tabramurra road  to smithys ...but as weather deteriorated  were afraid for Gaz , apparently waiting it out south of Guyra ...moonbies (near tamworth area, some 100 ks south ) and the expected travels of Tackler leaving late from Brisbane ..into a world of wet for him along the path.

tackler arrived later than expected ...but in reasonably good spirits considering the poor weather , I had just put my head down for the night but awoke to the k75 arriving way after midnight  (time shift  with nsw being n daylight savings ..loosing an hour in time over the border for us queenslanders )

I sat with him for a few welcoming sips of warmth restoring komeraderie  before we felt the  desperation and need of some sleep before the ride day planed for the next day .

was a bonus to be in the garage during the wet night out side , tom and bill camped out in tents ...hardy folks indeed  during the rain overnight

I found a little crook of a spot between the k1100 and the Honda   deep in the bowls of smiths garage ..to rest my weary head as the rain kept on coming ...sweet !

Northern Tablelands Ride 2016 - Page 2 14939480_10205769919727415_3712453477825128194_o

next morning all was good as the blokes saddled up for the ride after some  quick toast tea and extras , tom this time on a r bike as the k 75s were having issues ...interesting bike all the same and very welcome to see him .

ulis r1200 thingy  was incedible not my cup of tea ...but an awesome ride machine . as we later stretched our legs together along the lower reaches of the mann river valley and into grafton and the coastal regions

but before then the stretch across the highlands of the table lands traveling as a group was really fantastic , up and over "Ben Lomond " is always a blast .then into "Glenn" (glen innes ) for the morning tea ...then out to the rasburry lookout .all awesome and without incident , but to admire the road ahead and enjoy the ride together .

a few pics from rasburry before the steep descent into the humidity of the lower valleys and eventually the coastal region ....some good corners along the way ..for some marred by a blooming caravan setup doing the expected hold up of traffic on the way down ...

at the lower crossing of the mann river . Uli and hooked up and charged for the coast ...the r an awesome machine  was keeping track of old gerty ...but I had to wait for him to catch up after a few ..awkward trucks and corners things ...

we arrived in grafton and headed directly for the "crown hotel " a great meal and a few refreshing drinks , before heading out to find some "purple rain"  ie jacaranda trees shedding their flowers

by chance there were some dragon boat races occurring on the river front as we were preparing to leave
Northern Tablelands Ride 2016 - Page 2 14939548_10205769927567611_8378692290348594410_o

mm what grafton is famous for ...purple rain and streets

I was worried that the inclement weather  the night before , had stripped the flowers  and colour that we were hoping to experience ..but it looked great ..I hope you think so too .

and off up the water falls way ...wow...you just have to experience this path ...iv  stopped a few times there to take pics of the awesome wriggly road ...but with wet weather coming in ...riders interspersed at irregular intervals ,  rough entry and wet weather gear changes  in preparation for the after noon the group was spread out  quite far ...racing the corners was n my mind til ...whoops  slippery stuff started happening  and the regular har dive into and out of corners became a survival , and safety consideration...grin

smithy post the arrival of the group to Ebor

heres the falls as we attended it ...with low clouds  rumbling over the hills around

before heading off due west and towards Guyra  and home for the night  some 80 + ks off in intermittent rain ..

we passed a truck coming the opposie way, twb and pam directly behind me ...the wake of the truck approaching was absolutely  a wash of thick water from ground level to 12 feet  over all lanes ...omg what an experience  of being washed out of the landscape ..that water was soo thick ,, pam said later ..."omg   hes gone " before being washed out themselves ....freaky stuff

later that nigh all dried off ...craig got creative ...  yeah ok ...  something to share with others perhaps ...
,lets see your "K"  insignia ....

an other great night with friends with good food, good tales and grog ....   before the next day

for me .. unfortunately ...after propping gerty up for a fluids check of oil in sump. gearbox, diff ...etc ... the poor old girl took a tumble whilst I was away from her side ...the left hand foot of the centre stand sunk into the mud and she toppled  over hard on her side ....destroying the right hand side everything .....crap ...Q!!@!  ./..after an hour of so  I had stipped the fairing made repairs . reassembledas best we could and made road worthy with ...100mph  gaffer tape...lol in " tackler preferred choice of colour" to suit his k75 ...lol

off we are ...north this time ...oh ...bugga fuel pump had dislodged as well ..quick strip down and plug the thing in again ...and caught up with the guys 80 k north at the servo glenn innes again ...  a good run over the hills of the distinctly lonesome  terrain had us in Tenterfield  (Tenterfield saddler )  for a nice brunch ... before heading home into Queensland

rick g and twb heading off at ricks home town , stanthorpe , me nd tackler  keeping going along the path , tackler dropping off pace time to time ...  a rest was needed ...and enjoyed ...before thundering through warwick and into the coastal regions yet again on the way home ...

a great weekend had by many

thanks to everybody that attended ...was great to meet you all again

and sincere thanks to the smithys for a great occasion to be shared and their considerable efforts to make us all welcome

thanks mate !

Great write up and fantastic pictures Charlie. Yes that caravan put a bit of a damper on the ride. Now we know why they are labelled aluminium roadblocks. Cheers

Looks like you met Tex and Bundy.

Tex O'Grady (aka Terence) is the only one legally allowed to carry a dog on his tank in NSW.  He was given an exemption due to his charity work.  He also used to hold the around Australia record on a motorcycle, achieved in 1978.

There you go Al! the people you meet on a motorcycle. Thanks for the info - if I run across him again there's an interesting conversation in that.

Will catch up with you in Victoria next weekend.
