Hello!

Just preparing a tool packet for a tour.
Just a short question:

What size of hex key, Allen key are needed?

I don't want to take to much or to little ;-)

Cheers

K75, hex key, Allen key | size needed? Inbus-sruby

K75, hex key, Allen key | size needed? 6156250

went on a trip recently and before leaving just went around the bike and ascertained sizes e.g front wheel release allen bolts.

I have a set of hex allens but they all fit the ONE socket (1/2 drive) so you don't end up having to cart all those sockets that you have showing in that case. I don't even take the ratchet or bar because there is always someone on the road who has 1/2 drive stuff.
You can get a set of hex s which come both as long and short with the one socket for $24 on E Bay. and they mightn't be GEDORE quality but they're strong enough to use when dismantling a K to do clutch.

Thanks werewasi!

1/2 ratchet will be fine.
I will get a set from a friend, I would just like to tell him the sizes I need. Without missing anything.

Brakes bolts
Gear oil bolts
Etc.

A list of standard alen bold size for the K would be practical.

Cheers

agree rick

would like to add the most common high torque  to release allen keys bolts use the  5, 6, 8  allen head ...generally

the 3 , 4  lower sizes usually are workable with a good allen key set whilst on the road

don't forget to have a socket for the rear wheel bolts 17mm

take some common bolt sizes 6mm x 20 . 6mm x 25  and some nuts to suit ...so far I have used 5x 6mm bolts and nuts to fix loose things on other riders bikes ...about 5 or 6 fuses of different current ratings  and a couple of stop and tail globes

take your own ratchet and extension to suit ...else you are dependant on someone else for any repair ... else plan for a further 3 hours on the side of the road and lots of hope that someone will stop ...with a proper kit

there is an old urban myth  ...if you take it with you,  the likelyhood that you will need it diminishes greatly ...

there are a few threads in the forum about what we carry as tool kits  .........see here

https://www.k100-forum.com/t564-what-do-you-carry-in-your-tool-kit

good luck

The factory tool kit is all you really need.

For a long tour an oil filter wrench is handy.

And a compact multimeter and some electrical goodies.

There are a few small exceptions (some peg plate bolts and the 12mm rear pivot on paralevers) but you can just about disassemble and put back together an entire K bike with the factory tool kit. Obviously you'd want a torque wrench to assemble one but for road repairs you can do pretty much anything with the supplied toolkit.

You have no idea how much you have saved me!

Not only in money but also in space!! I'm quite new to the K world and am planning a few long range trips in the next year. Space becomes a bit of a luxury when you're on the road for a week or two! anything that saves me 1/2 inch of space is a god send!  I will have to get a picture of the 1979 Suzuki tool kit that I use to carry... how you'll all laugh..

I think the full BMW tool kit is a must. I also supplement that with a small range of ⅜ and ¼ Allen head and hex head sockets with ratchets and a small extension. I think ½ drives are too big and take up too much room plus sometimes they're a little wide to use on some screws/bolts in confined spots.
I also carry some good screwdrivers, long nose pliers, small DMM, knife etc.
Everything is packed loose so it fits in with less space.

Spares.... Clutch and throttle cables, an assortment of bulbs, fuses, tyre valves and caps and spare SPs are a must but on longer treks I'll also take relays, starter relay, temp controller. On my recent trip across the Nullarbor, due to the remoteness, I threw in a starter motor kit and voltage regulator just in case.

Duct tape, electrical connectors, wire, cable ties, very basic first aid supplies.

One thing I will not leave without is a puncture repair kit. I've used the Co² canisters to inflate but after my last puncture I think I'll get a small compressor for longer trips. If I'd had a puncture out on the Nullabor it could have been hundreds of kms to an air compressor as some of the roadhouses out there don't provide air. Co² canisters will only get you up to around 25psi
