-4c in the shed last night, so much for waiting for warmer weather, looks like spring will be colder that winter..

Spline ready to split, and the new bits list is getting longer:(

I remember back in 2014 88KE sent me a similar photo of his LT taken about 1am just as he was replacing the rear crankshaft seal.

Some few hours later he posted a photo of the same LT parked out in the early morning sun all loaded up for the ferry to France......met at 1pm for lunch and had a trouble free trip.

As the Nutty Professor says...'You can do it'. Looking forward to seeing you on 19th.

And what's wrong with Girls? At least Chocolate is trying to get more of them interested in the forum...

BTW - some of us haven't stopped riding for the winter, but down here in the softy south, we haven't had a particularly cold winter this year - just a very wet and windy one (they call that "global warming"). I have only clocked -6 deg C on my hour long work commute twice so far, but several mornings have dipped into the -2 to -4 deg C range. I've also been getting out for longer rides at the weekends whenever I can, so you are not alone in getting out there!

If 'girls forum' means more K owners like Magda and Becky then we are up for it...

I like winter riding too, something nice about being warm and snug in good gear on a bike that's going well on good wet weather tyres and Ks seem better than most when it comes to winter riding.

Fixed that for you John.

As for the Kars, well in fairness to you it was a case of Kars or miss out due to ice and frost on the ground rather than the temperature.

Of course we do hope Paul is back again and maybe this time the Kamping might be more in the North east.......!!

Seems to be that way CJ - too many reds in sheds (the K1100 fraternity)!

I wonder, what's worse a "Classic Motorcyclist" who spends all their time polishing and looking at their bikes rather than riding them (SCP and his Vincent Owner gang are excluded from this sweeping statement which I have based entirely on zero factual evidence) or a "Crotch-rocket motorcyclist" who only ride June through August, and then only when there is zero chance of rain?

Aye, it's bad when some southern Englishman makes the sons of Erin look soft.
Maybe greasing their splines is a euthanism for something else because that's what they all seem to be doing at the minute. Very Happy

It must be the 50% Aberdeenshire blood (the cold dry side of Scotland) that makes the difference - or is it a case of "no sense, no feeling"?

But thanks CJ - I've probably got a price on my head now - perhaps I better stay down under for my own safety now you've riled the brotherhood on my behalf!

Hi Olaf,

Coming through Charleville on Saturday evening, stopped at the traffic lights, Bike just died in the road and could not start it again. Engine just kept turning over no ignition, it was obvious no fuel was getting to the engine. Tank was half full no smell of fuel, Fuel pump not working. Left the Bike in Gardai Station for safe keeping and got a spin home, happy that the bike was in a safe place.

Biker friend have a Bike trailer so off to Charleville on Sunday to bail out the Bike, Gardai in Charleville were very Helpful. Bike home safely set about finding the problem. Exchanged Lump Hammer for multimeter. With the help of this forum I was able to narrow the problem down to possibly be Fuel Level Sensor failure, since i was able to energise the Fuel Pump by connecting it directly to the Battery

a continuity test on the tank connections to the fuel pump connections showed that the pos Green wire is dead. Hopefully if i can locate a working Fuel Level Sensor I will be looking forward to the day out on the 19th of March

If you have any suggestions or corrections to the above I would appreciate your Input

Pat

I got a new phone and lost all my Eccentric contact numbers. Lucky me had the phone numbers of almost all the Eccentrics so can't call you on it.

But fuel level sensor? I thought it simply fed the 5 litre warning light but had no other function. I didn't think there was an electrical control from the fuel level sensor to the fuel pump ....unless there may be one via the FICU or ECU and I may well be wrong. I guess I would have expected the K to run without the warning light working...?

Your LT is same as my LT and had the connections rear right of the fuel tank. You have checked the connector is getting the correct power supplies at that point and that the connections are good. I have come across damage to those wires which has resulted in lack of power to the fuel pump.

Wonder if anyone has a fuel level sensor around Cork? Jimmy Ellis might know of some others from R models will work. His number also gone from my phone but will try and email him.

Oh bad news too.

YOURE LT IS ALSO RED.

Suspect the pins in the tank-main loom connector block. The fuel level sensor has nothing to do with the fuel pump operation.

Same thought as me Dai. Bolt on tanks have it front left, two pins/clips its rear right.

But, having seen a few dodgy FICU plug connections cause a similar problem, as in the unit under the seat, I would also be checking that connection is secure.

Thanks Guys for the response. When I connect a pos lead from Battery to Green/white wire on main tank connection, no power gets to the fuel pump pos connection, the issue I have with the fuel level sensor is more to do with the corrosion round the connections of the sensor, and not the function of the sensor itself. The fuel gauge and the low fuel warning light work. I'll take on board your suggestions and go at it again tomorrow

progress report tomorrow night

Fek!

Went out today to sort the loose connection issue I seem to have.

Looked like the do p****d against the rear tyre. But I don't have a dog. Then I thought final drive leak...no, all looked good. Then I thought brake fluid leak but couldn't be. Fluid on top of final drive unit.......then SHOCK. Rear shock, must be my off road incident last Sunday morning, I do recall it bottomed out and I suppose some damage.

It's the standard shock popped on in 2014 as the previous one was kaput. Short term I have a Koni [not Ikon] on the LT but I know its longer which I don't want. So, do I get stock rebuilt or get Koni rebuilt to shorter length? ....

Today's progress report.  Disconnected Pos and Neg wires from top of fuel pump, Took Fuel level sensor unit out of fuel tank complete. Four screws on bottom of tank, on the bench i cleaned as much of the  corrosion off the unit as i could. Out with the multimeter checked all wires from Main connector plug to connections in body of sensor unit, on to the pos and neg wires that connect to the Fuel Pump. And as I suspected no continuity on the the Green/White wire passed the Body of the Unit.

My temporary Fix.  Soldered a wire to the connection on the Body of the Unit . Reinstalled the unit in the tank brought the wire out the top of the tank under the cap, soldered the other end to the Green/White wire on the Main tank Connection, plugged tank connection to bike loom. put a small amount of fuel in to the Tank.  Moved the Bike out into open ground, turned on the ignition slowly pressed the starter Button (getting ready to run) heard the sound of the pump kicking on, Bike started up

So far so good

If the routing of the tail from the tank is anything like the one on ComberJohn's Ghost then I'll bet you have a fracture right where the cable folds down across the top of the relay box. Really, you only need around six-eight inches of tail to easily make the connection, so I don't think you can lose by hacking off the plug and socket and replacing them with something like this:

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/product.php/613/multi-connectors-6-3mm

Connection finally sorted by swapping the FICU from the LT. The plastic recess clip on the FICU that holds the cable to the FICU had a crack allowing the cable to come loose which explained some slightly erratic running as well as the cut out. Any way a test ride proved all good and the speedo etc working good and thought now for the rear shock

Stopped to have a look in the fuel tank and tank won't open!. Bah but Sidecar Paul's fix may work. Key refused to turn so gave it some WD40 and will leave it a while in case something has just seized a bit.

That FICU plug does cause a lot of issues.

Gotta say, agree with you about the Galway weather being proper weather Reg - I remember the experience well from last "summer" - but it soon blows over and then the road that rises to meet you is well worth the wait (and provides access to the best Guinness in Ireland, or so i was told!).

You will make it home in time.

The plan is to end up at Stradbally Fayre at a civilised hour for probably a late lunch and then break off in respective directions. Its 2 hours home for me, I suspect much the same for you if you go N80 from Stradbally/Portlaoise/Tullamore/Kilbeggan then N4 to Athlone and sure the K will find its own way home from there....I suspect 88KE and yourself will be heading same way and I know he also has commitments that evening......

See you Saturday.

Olaf

Reg, 1hr from my Brother's House in Barna to Athlone via the motorway. I aim to be back here by 5.30-6pm  due to kiddy commitments. So should be passing Athlone no later than 5pm. I'll ride back with you that far.

I'm still on.

I've to replace the front brake master cylinder tomorrow as the old one was pitted/weaping.  Shouldn't be a problem as I have the old one disassembled, but have to lift the tank, to get the heated grips connection, to slide the old one off the end of the bars. Bit of a faff, but not too bad.

I've the new shock on, so I'll bring the old one with me to give to Will.

No such thing as a cheep bike. But then, all the stuff I've replaced is pretty much consumables so far, except for this.

Olaf, I'll give you a shout beforehand to organize to meet up in Carrigaline/Dunkettle.

Fintan,

I think provisional meet up leave Dunkettle for 7.15am.

M8 to Cahir J11 then N24 to Tipperary/Limerick.

That puts us at Pallasgreen petrol station/coffee [Applegreen? anyway only the one, it's on the left] slightly about 8.15am.

Have to work out route to Athlone from there but about 1 hour 50 or so, plus time for a quick coffee along the way.

Maybe see you around Carrigaline Court for 7am.

Sorted all my problems except for the rear shock which is in progress.

Heated grips??

Olaf

I couldn't remember the name of the station and am up that way often enough as we have been restoring the churches at Nicker and Templebraden.

You got the K back on road yet? Any chance of you joining us on the day?

A high of 13c with sunny intervals.
Might see those K1's out yet.
If Dai wants me to bring any more for parts for you guys, I'll have to bring the car. Very Happy

I'm in! - Snap decision, wasn't going to be free this weekend, but now I am and the forecast looks too good not to come over for a blast.

Ferry booked - get into Rosslare at 06:30 and then head back out again at 21:15 on 19th. Flying visit, but your campsites aren't open yet and a flying visit is better than sitting at home wishing I had.

Sleep deprivation is all part of the training for the great Australian adventure.

Camp site at Nore Valley open March 1st......

Great to see you and discussed with Will.....

Option 1: Rosslare N25 and N80 N24 up to Limerick will take you through Cahir/Tipperary/Pallasgreen....timing is fine and we can still meet at Pallasgreen. Timing will be ok.
Option 2: Rosslare Dublin/M50 and meet up with others at Dublin.
Option 3: Rosslare to Wexford meet up with Trapper and travel together.

We won't be offended if you go via Dublin. Leprachaun

Maybe the route back from Stradbally to Waterford we can travel together.

Route to Pallas green is N25 to the the N24 NOT N80. !

N80 (Runs SE to NW) looks the Direct route to the meet point but as you will be returning along it from Stradbally to Roslare , it might be nicer to vary your routing via Olaf's other options . Looking Forward to see you BAE that's a brave Ride!

Brave ride? Is there something I should know about visiting so close to St Patricks day?

It's going to be about a 680 mile round trip for me, but recovery time on ferries to/from Rosslare, so hopefully not going to break my butt. All the riding UK side will be in the dark and I expect I'll be glad to be home and waking the neighbours at about 4am Sunday morning. A 32 hour day, but with a few hours sleep planned in to recharge the batteries.

Looking forward to meeting the Eccentric Krew again - it's been a long time since August and my last visit.

I'm planning on routing via Pallasgreen (N25/N24) to give the circular tour. There was no advantage to going via Dublin this time round and it would give me a longer ride home - no point riding down through Snowdonia and Breacon Beacons when there won't be any scenery visible and much more chance of beasties jumping out into the road (especially upset Welsh rugby fans) to spoil my day.

Cheers.

Paul,

Sent you a PM. Looks like a decent run [175km possibly a small bit over 2 hours but Saturday traffic will be very light] from Rosslare Harbour to Pallasgreen, more likely to be 8.30 to 8.45am arrival time there.

With that in mind may make sense to aim to leave Pallasgreen 9 to 9.10am, we might let you programme the route into your satnav if CluainSi hasn't already done one.

For Pat O'D, Bjorn: This would suggest we can leave Dunkettle in Cork 7.15am and refuel/coffee at Pallasgreen about 8.30am.

For Jerh Heffernan: Puts us passing via Mitchelstown about 7.50am and Cahir about 8am. I know there is a nice route from Mitchelstown up through Galbally to intersect N24 at Tipperary [I do often use it] but at the moment we are looking at the M8 to Cahir.

For Corkboy: Meet at Carrigaline Court for 7am?

Avenger GT we would love to meet you at Pallasgreen too.

Olaf

7am Carrigaline Court is good for me.

I may have the new owner of my old K100 (Richard) coming too, he will meet us at 715 at Dunkettle. I will firm that up beforehand.

Dublin contingent to meet at 9:30 AM Clarion Hotel - Liffey Valley  just off the N4.

The Red is still in the shed, and as Comberjohn has pulled out his stone, it looks like the K1 is coming out.

Ferry booked - get into Rosslare at 06:30 and then head back out again at 21:15 on 19th. Flying visit, but your campsites aren't open yet and a flying visit is better than sitting at home wishing I had.

Sleep deprivation is all part of the training for the great Australian adventure.

Hi Paul

There is always a bed for you in Dublin if you want to do this again.

Thanks Simon,

I could do with seeing more of Dublin and hitting the town again, but I figured that the place will be even busier this weekend with the Ireland/Scotland rugby match. I'll be back when I have some more time. This weekends visit is very impromptu and spur of the moment.

Cheers

07:15 sounds terrible for me (graveyard shift on Friday) but I should be able to make it. Hope to bring Dave (a colleague) along, considering you BMW snobs don't take offence by having to ride in the companion of a HD Smile  Worship
