Hi all

My lovely K100 has developed a slipping clutch.

It slips when giving it the beans in 3-4-5.

It also slips earlier on when 2 up.

It only has 68,000 on it, so would be surprised if the clutch is worn out.

Any thoughts?

Probably is the clutch plate. Mine's doing the same at 70,000 miles and I know there's no oil leak to contaminate it. It's on my todo list at the next spline lube.

Hmm Shame.

What is the procedure to replace the clutch plate. It looks fairly involved due to its location.

Does the engine have to come out?

The procedure is the same, except you don't have all the plastic to deal with.

Excellent. Thanks indeed.

To be honest, it doesnt look like a super fun job, but at least it will give me peace of mind that the splines are lubed.

HI All

Haven't been about much, many things have gotten in the way of getting my K100 back up to 100% running condition.

How likely is it that I have a worn clutch causing the slipping and not leaking oil from the engine or gearbox side?

Is there a way of checking this before I dismantle it all?

Is there any oil coming from the weep hole in the bottom of the intermediate section between the engine and the transmission.  If so, is it engine or gear oil?  That should give you a good idea of what you are dealing with.

If your seal is leaking with sufficient oil to effect the clutch then it will be visible under the clutch housing (the intermediate housing with the starter clutch alternator all in it) you will see a small weep hole and if there is oil mist present there then you can expect the seal will need replacing, provided the front of the bike is dry, if its oily misty then you cant be sure. But its a morning and a bit to replace the clutch, so anytime you have half a day spare and a new clutch plate you can go see for yourself. You will be surprised how straight forward these bikes are in their assembly.

I haven't seen a clutch on a K that was slipping from being worn out. All of them I have dealt with have been from oil leaking from the engine or gearbox.
My attitude is to replace the rear main engine seal when the gearbox is out unless I know that it has been done within the last few years and shows no sign of leaking.
Make sure you check the pressure and drive plate for dishing as it is a common problem and will cause the new plate to slip because it will only have contact on the outer edge.

We found dishing on the drive and pressure plates on Tom's 'Goulburn bike' when we had it dismantled for the sprag clutch free-up

Can they be machined, or do they have to be replaced?

I did repair one but it was a real PITA and would only do it again if I had no choice.
I have replaced them with the matching worn disc and all worked well. If the disc measures up well within limits at the outer edge then use it.
When I think about it I would not even hesitate to machine the new disc to match the taper if needed but new pressure and drive plates are best.

Surprisingly, it seems that slipping can also be caused by a badly adjusted clutch, but don't ask me how or why. I thought mine was on the way out but after re-adjusting the clutch as per 'The Right Way To Do It' (tm) it hasn't slipped since, even under a third-gear full-bore run. And no, the cable wasn't under tension.

Mine was slipping too, after about 20,000kms on a new clutch plate. But I adjusted it (cant remember exactly what I did) and it was fixed.

Whats 'The Right Way To Do It' Dai?

Follow the manual instead of 'doing it the way you've always done it'. lol!
