Hi all, after pulling the k bike out of hibernation a couple of months back,  there seems to be a problem with the  Temp, charge and choke warning lights. when I turn the ignition on and centre the kill switch none of these light light up. the only one that works is the battery light. My initial thoughts were blown bulbs so I took the instrument cluster off and checked all the suspect bulbs, all good. am I looking at dead sensors or  is there a fuse or relay that could be blown?

any  ideas would be greatly appreciated

Cheers George

What is the battery light? the charge light should be the "battery" light, showing battery charging or not.

Anyway, all those lights have Pin6 in common on the rear connector. That's power fed from Fuse #1. It could be the fuse or the connection at the back of the instrument cluster that needs cleaning.

Hi Robmack thanks for that. I pulled the instrument cluster off and checked everything again. the pins are clean and the fuse is fine. so no joy except finding that the wire to pin 12 was broken. turns out that's to the one for the choke light which is working again now I have fixed it.
this makes me wonder could the wires to the temp and oil pressure sensors be broken as well

The temp light doesn't show when you turn on the ignition, only when the temp gets to high.

Oil pressure light....could also be the sensor,,,,easy test....ground the wire at the sensor.

As Inge says... but it's a complete bugger to get at if the rubber cap is still intact because the wire has next to no slack in it. A possibly quicker way to check the warning light (if the tank is off and it sounds like it may be) is to ground the warning light wire. There should be a white socket forward-right and behind the radiator with a single brown-green wire to it. Disconnect the socket and ground the female side.

If the oil pressure light comes on then the circuit to the bulb is okay and the switch is possibly fubar'd.

Reconnect the socket and disconnect the wire from the oil pressure switch. It's underneath the oil/water pump at the front of the engine. Ground the wire.

If the warning light comes on then the switch is definitely fubar'd.
If the warning light does not come on then there's a possible break in the lower wire. It runs behind the HES cover (the T-shaped cover on the front of the engine). Unlikely.

Honestly - I'll bet you get to the pressure switch and the wire just falls off because the spade connector has corroded through.

You can statically test the temperature light but it's very difficult. Just running the bike at idle for five-ten minutes (which is the test for the fan) isn't going to work because the fan will kick in before over-temp is reached. You can try this just to ensure the fan is working and then ignore the over-temp light. OTOH, if the over-temp light comes on it will tell you that the fan's not working... Very Happy

good idea inge

perhaps if you have found at least 1 broken cable ...there could be more ?

we have seen that rodents have infested wiring looms over the years

could this be worth investigating ?

good luck !!!

Hi all after some investigation i found that all my lights on the dash are ok......the sensors that make them go..not so good. i have a stuffed oil sensor (replacement on the way) a suspect water temp sensor (also on the way) and a dead thermo fan ( also on the way) so I have some tinkering to do next week.

thanks for all the posts  it was really helpful.

cheers George

ps any of the aussies doing the toy run this year?
