Hi there,
There are some very cheap fuel pumps listed on eBay at the moment to fit K series bikes.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Intank-Fuel-Pump-for-BMW-K100RT-1983-1989-/262158198560?hash=item3d09d8a720:g:vCEAAOSwf-VWVBbr

Probably not the best but for the price, worth having as a spare. I've bought one out of interest, I'll let you know what I think when it arrives.

Mike.

I also took one,]. Having an issue at the moment and the fuel pump and filter are top of the suspect list.

The fuel pumps can be a problem, that's why I've got 5 or 6 in stock.....and before you ask, no, I don't know why I've got so many. Rolling Eyes

Having thought about it, I do know why I have so many. I currently own 3 K series bikes and you can't repair the pumps, I've tried, so when they start playing up, it's a throw away item and not worth the frustration.

I have two of them on the theory that as long as I have a spare I will never have one fail.  Seems even having the cheap ones as a back up will keep my OEM pump running.

BTW, if you want them to fulfill the insurance function you need to have the correct wiring connectors and the crimping tool for them with you at all times.  Then your pump will last forever.

This is the one that I bought. 52mm, same as the original diameter.

From China. 80 dollars AU, including postage. Have a look here.

Below: contents of the box.

Below: overhead shot...old on the left, new on the right. Thinner metal on the new. I think it's to keep the weight down, so it'll go even faster! Rolling Eyes
K series fuel pumps on eBay Old_le10

My old pump had the wrong strainer on the end of the pump. It wasn't even connected to the pump, it was sitting on the bottom of the tank. The tube from the strainer to the top of the tank wasn't connected to anything!

Parts on order and I'll fit them when they get here.

More to come.

I've ordered a black rubber support thingo, the white plastic thingo that bolts to the black rubber support thingo and a new filter/strainer that fits on the end of the pump.

When all of this arrives, I'll fit it up and see what happens next.

As the new Chinese pump is made of thinner metal, the noise of the pump may increase. The noise is not really an issue...I'm more concerned about longevity.

Not that I don't trust the fine manufacturing skills of our northern neighbours, but I'll be taking a spare pump assembly wherever I go.

Just in case.

I got mine and opened the package.

It has the pump, a short about 65mm length of black fuel pipe, 2 jubilee worm drive hose clips, gauze filter and the black seating component. All looks ok except the pump is set up with spade connectors and not the screw on connectors.

Where to next?

Not so keen on changing the wiring.

I looked in tank and its got the original wiring and fittings. Changing it means if I ever need a future change I am in trouble. The inevitable is that I would be away when it would happen so might look at 'adding' a screw on conversion piece on to the in tank wiring.

My question on this one since I have access to some spare wiring......if I use a short length of wire, adapted from an old pump so the existing tank wiring will screw to it using the existing arrangement, other end at pump with a female spade connector OR soldered on to the pump spade connectors...........is this an option? I would most definitely prefer NOT to make a permanent change to the bike wiring.

I've just looked at my own cheapie and I've noticed that the male spades on the pump look like they're soldered on? If so, it could be a case of soldering on two male threads of the correct size.
I'll have a look later this week.

I've considered that option but the spades aren't wide enough to take the correct thread. There wouldn't be enough metal at the sides and I would expect it to break due to vibration....and we all know that if it was to break, it would be miles away from anywhere.

With spade connectors on the pump, you'd then need to use a bolt and nut to connect to the existing ring connector.

How about if you snip the old ring connector off and replace it with another new ring connector plus another really short wire (less than 1cm) with a spade on the end. That way you'vegot both options and can swap without any drama OTSOTR (on the side of the road)
You'd need to make sure the loose connector couldn't short out on the casing of the pump

Cut the ring terminal off the end of the wire.

Replace the ring terminal with a female spade connector that will mate with the pump spade connector.

Make a short piece of wire with a ring on one end and a male spade on the other.

Connect the male of the short wire to the female on the end of the fuel pump supply wire.

Connect the ring to the fuel pump.

When pump fails.  Unplug male spades, remove old pump,  install new pump and connect female spades on end of pump supply wires to new pump.

Make very sure you use insulated spade connectors.

I like this one, simple and effective.....means you can do all the screw connections outside the tank and just connect the two spade connectors inside. BUT my worry was that if these ever came apart and produce a spark......or is that reason for the insulated spade connectors bit?

Why worry if it did go bang then you may be able to just knock on the door of the international space station and get the next shuttle bus home.
Most of the newer pumps have spade terminals and I have not heard of an electric pump causing orbital problems.

I have more confidence on the final connection being a spade connector than an intermediate connection being spade connector, that's all.

I do worry if we go bang. Its the wrong kind of bang. The international space station might have to deal with some extra testicle activity.

Extra testicle???  How does an octopus get to the space station?

About spade connectors, the ones I have been using are a royal beitch to disconnect.  Accidently coming apart is the last thing I would expect them to do. The important thing is to make sure you use the right size of INSULATED spade connector and make sure the crimp can't come apart.

Doing the way I described makes the electrical hook up of the new pump at the side of the road even faster than using the OEM pump with the ring terminals.  It also means you can use any pump you find if you aren't carrying a spare.

I have to agree with your post, definitely makes a future pump change much simpler and means you can use whatever pump becomes available.

Precisely what is an insulated terminal?  Would you expect shrink wrap to dissolve in fuel?   Question

There's been more effort put into solving the wiring differences than actually manufacturing these crappy fuel pumps.

However, there is solder at the bottom of the spade so I thought I'd heat it up to remove the spade to make a connection correction.
WRONG!!! ....and here are the results of my failed experiment.

K series fuel pumps on eBay Cimg3019

Here you can see down onto the commutator where the brush normally sits.

K series fuel pumps on eBay Cimg3022

The solder only holds the wire from the carbon brush so when you heat the part to take away the solder, the connection melts it's way out of the pump top and the whole thing explodes outwards all over the garage.

Here's the brush and spade married again. It's pushed back in nice and tight so it's ready to go if needed.

If we could keep my little experiment quiet and not mention this to anyone I'd be really grateful.   lol!

I was talking to 88KE this afternoon and considering this as an option. 'I dunno, I said as I looked at it, looks like those 'solder blobs' are holding the spade connector on'.

Anyway since you saved me blowing mine all over the place I will happily buy you a beer when you get over here.

The solder only holds the brushes braid on top of the cap.
The spade is crimped onto the top of the cap that the braid is soldered on to. Unfortunately, you can't see the crimping because the solder cap covers it up.

I'm glad I looked though.

Like I said, there's a beer waiting for you over here. A beer is like a bus- you wait forever then three of them come together.

I found another pump. Have a look here

The stated diameter is 5cm. Close enough to 52mm?

US $31.89 posted to Australia. For that money, what's the worst that can happen? A fire? An explosion? A huge fireball as I ride over the edge of a cliff screaming my head off?

I'll buy 2...one to keep as a spare and the other I'll open it up to see what it's like inside and compare it to my dead Bosch pump. Pictures to follow.

I like the way the pre-filter is set up.

Basically the same. The pump in post 13 has a "lump" on the side.
