I ran out of things I wanted to do on the zx14r.
Its got the go fast bits and programmable ecu and so on so the weapon of man distraction is a k100lt getting the strip back and café racer treatment.

So at this stage I have a stripped down k100 and have started a few mods.

Airbox is gone and built a custom filter intake to hold a K&N pod.

BST rearsets will get ordered soon.

Clipons are on the way.

Thanks.

The intake is finished. I am  just waiting on the pod to arrive.
it should run the same as stock as the sensors are unchanged.
It may be able to breath a little easier on full throttle.

Don't laugh at my tank I only just started sanding a few hours ago.
You made me put some polish on it just for the photo.

Another day of sanding and some reassembly.
Tank had a dent. Its small and near the front.
Ill leave it and if it bugs me later ill need paint the tank again. Wondering about having it painted chrome.

Hagon shock cleaned and installed.

Wheel are going to be gloss black at some point.
Painted the inside of the rear disk royal blue. Looks good so ill do both front disks also.

I have been trying to find a ally radiator overflow bottle but the only nice ones found so far are 2 litre and a little big unless it goes where the battery was. I am planning on getting the new age small battery replacement and putting that under the seat hump at this point.

Was hoping get a overflow small enough to go behind the radiator where the airbox was.

Made up a quick front guard today. Work in progress.

Ordered the speedworks rearsets also. Cant wait for them to arrive but ill be broke for a while now.

Also having trouble finding a coolant overflow bottle or tank that I like.
All the good ones seem to be for cars and to large. Might have to buy a car one and cut it down and re-weld the base.

Did you weld the circle onto the square (tech talk, I know)? Can you clue me onto the steps and the specs of the materials?

Rolled a piece of aluminium into a 64 mm external circle twice as long as the end result then hose clamped the piece that would be unused. I then shaped the edge on the side to weld so that it fitted into the original square and welded the 2 together.

Another half day in the office.
Horn mounted and a some wiring removed wrapped harness in self-ama.lgamating tape.

Cut the rear section down and shaped hoop to be welded in place.
Indicators will be bullet style and be inside the hollow tubes.
Theres another that has done this and they look good
Re-run alternator cables and removed battery cable set up as battery will be in tail hump.

Finished ignition wiring. Speedo will mount on the other side.

Hi mossey. If you mount the horn without the two metal strips as per original, it'll sound like something from a moped. They don't like a solid mount.
Couldn't see where you have it on the pics.

All good its still on the original strips that have been moved to 45 angle. Mounting point just under front right side of tank. Sits just under the radiator refill cap almost where the original air intake snout was.

Bit lazy so circle is location. I have my slippers on now. If I get my shoes on and go to garage ill be there for a couple of hours. lol!

Ill only be registering the K100 3 months a year during Jan/Feb/March and will be short trip fine weather riding it.
Ill keep the zx14 rego up all year.

Our registration is $530.00 for a year and no point having both insured and registered all year.

I have a work vehicle so bikes are weekend and evening enjoyment only.

I had a guzzi 1100 sport with pods and it seemed ok in the wet. I guess a standard airbox is sucking wetness through the filter on any bike anyway.

Im more worried about my knee bumping it and when I have foot-pegs and seat unit if it looks likely ill make a hoop around it to prevent this.

Im only new to K100 but I have retained the variable air valve system and also the sensor so im thinking I should be ok.
Ill be keeping the same header size also so should be ok with that also.

Also the surface area of the pod is almost the same as the stock airbox filter if that helps me im not sure.

Someone need explain to the Chinese that the throttle slide needs to slide on a smaller surface that's smooth.

The bars on a BMW are 22mm and the bars you got are 7/8 so that leaves an interference fit, common problem and hard to get around with after market bars.

Those clip-on do come in 22mm bars if you search on ebay.  I bought the same set in black with 22mm bar and it fit the throttle and other controls well.

I order clip-ons for a yzf600 Yamaha.

That would or should have been 22mm in metric?

It never gave the tube dimensions on the listing.

Problem with end cap bullet indicators in pipes as NZ bike plate will be to wide.
Will need go with standard stem indicators.
Didn't like the fork brace so off it comes.
Didn't like blue ignition so made it black.

Constructed rear mounting for ecu and mounted that.
Painted original bar ends as the fit the new clip-ons.

See if you can get a better (looser) curve on the cable coming from the ECU plug. You're putting a lot of stress on the wires on the inside of that curve; three possible outcomes:

1. Insulation splits and causes shorts.
2. Wires break.
3. Nothing actually goes wrong (if you're lucky!).

I've been wiring motorcycles since 1981 and that curve makes me shudder.

Yep its just to hold it for a while ill be slicing up the rear of the plug once I have bar clamps for the front of the seat. They will go either side of the added cross bar with a mounting bar across them.
The idea is I can on bolt the seat via the bar and the clamps will stay in place.

I ordered these last night.

Another K100 cafe racer. Clamps10

Once I have those in place ill cut the plug back away and Raychem the wiring into its final shape.

Im sparky by trade.

EDIT:  Ok I went down to garage and sorted it out.
I used tar rubber that we use to seal cell phone jammer coax plugs outside and the trust self amalgamation tape.

Im calling it the DAI plug adaption and harness kit.

Ran some wires for the indicators and stop light etc.

More good news the collector has been made so ill pick it up this weekend.
Its in Mild steel but hes keen to make them in stainless if more people want them.
Hes also put a 30% up angle mid pipe onto it in 2inch external so might be time to search mufflers.

Ok spent the day with Malcolm

Have the mild steel prototype unit with oversized inlet pipe to check angles. Some modifications on the cluster of the inlets to better suit the pipes natural layout so it wont be the stock standard square pattern of most collectors but closer to the natural pipe layout of a k100.

He is happy to take orders for anyone who would like one.
Note the outlet length on the stock unit will be 40mm longer for those who like short pipes and you will need cut it down to suit if you want it shorter or advise Malcolm.
Prices are very good.

Stainless with outlet pipe to suit 54mm ID(note you can pick another size but it will add some cost as these will be hand made items).

Remember its a hand made item so any additional requirements can be arranged. Perhaps spring hoops and so on.

$160 NZD plus freight.
This is approx. 140USD or AU dollars plus freight or 85 UK Pounds.

looking good

just an input

you might notice that the inlet pipes on the standard muffler collector are staggered in length on an 8 valve  , on opposing sides to allow for clamp fit up

this could be a good thing to think about as it is noted that the welded pipes on later 16 valve models with stainless tubes seem to crack ,

I have a suspicion that the odd lengths of the pipes and heating effect , along with vibration causes this ....perhaps there is benefit from the clamp fit as it allows the pipes to move slightly and avoid the stress and eventually cracking .
unless you intend the fittup to be spring loaded and interference fitment

just a thought

Yes we have allowed 4-5mm gap in closest pipes for clamps to fit even side by side.

Mate that would look way cool!
Really  like it!
Makes my plain 7 1/4" H3 headlight real boring.
Go for it! Steampunk all the way

Yes, go for it, that looks really interesting. What is it?  Worst case, if you don't like how it looks you can switch to something else later, and sell that to one of us.

Cheers

Seat unit arrived today and is a perfect match to the supports made earlier.
Plenty of room for battery in the hump and maybe even enough for the radiator header tank.

Rear light ordered.
Not sure but im hoping to cut out the shape and insert it into the rear assy if possible.

Constructed the rear bracket for the seat unit which I can add a couple of leds for the plate.
Mounted the rego holder also.

Collector 4 into one will be ready this coming week. The 4 collector pipes are welded in and the cone is ready to press onto the rig to shape it.

What do you plan to do for rear-sets?  I love the bskspeedworks ones, but don't like the price.  I am debating making my own, but am not sure.

I have already paid for a set. (BSK)
The new design gear change clamp is sorted and they will start producing again.
Im number one on the delivery list I think. Very Happy

I was thinking of making some but a lot of time and effort without massive savings unless you have a very good workshop or a cnc machine.

Maybe a option would be buying a second hand set of voodoo or similar and adapting a mounting plate and brake master mount.

I did this with my race bike 5 years ago.
GSX1000 rearsets adapted to fit 1989 FZR1000w pre 89 race bike.

I still think the BSKs are to nice to not get though.

You are probably right,  It is just hard to comprehend the fact that the BSK rearsets will cost more then the whole donner bike!  I only paid 500$ Cdn for the donner, mind you is was not running and was in many pieces when I picked it up.  Cost about the same a a bsk rear set as it sits in the photo.

Could be worse you could be earning NZ dollars like me and pay $845 for the reasets including freight plus ill have to pay 15% GST ((TAX)$126)PLUS ABOUT $70 IMPORT DUTIES.

Total cost will be $1040 unless I am lucky and it gets past customs.
I paid $1200 for the bike so I know how you feel.

Still------------ They are nice rearsets.

Saying that my race bike cost me $4000 and ended up owing me $17000
