A week ago a slightly nervous gent from Switzerland arrived at the dealership to pick up his pre-arranged secondhand F650GS twin so he could ride to Alaska. He needed gear and some accessories so I spent nearly three hours with him getting him kitted up. In his size I had only a GS Dry jacket that fit well, but it had a few red highlights on it and he was, shall we say, fussy. A nice bloke, but a bit of a princess.

He thanked me and away he rode with his bike and new jacket, slightly unhappy with his perceived lack of choice, towards the three day Alaska-bound ferry. I did mention to him that another Beemer shop up in Seattle had a blue jacket of the kind he was seeking.

Next day I get a call from the general manager up at the other shop asking me what he'd paid for the jacket and would I mind taking it back into stock. No worries, I want him to be happy. The deal was done, he got his blue jacket and away he sailed. I received a pleasant email thanking me for my time and with apologies for returning the jacket. A person from the other shop dropped it off to me on her way through town. I checked the jacket, replaced the tags and restocked it - he'd not worn it but to Seattle, 50 kms away. I found a coupla crumpled up shop receipts which I chucked away.

Fast forward over the weekend. A very busy weekend. Many people tried on that jacket. This morning I get a frantic call. "Do you sell the jacket? Can you check the inside pocket? Tell me what you find!", he said in thick, Swiss accented English.

One thousand American dollars in twenties tucked neatly away inside. No one noticed. It was a five hundred dollar jacket. Imagine the surprise if someone did take it home! That's a five hundred dollar rebate for free! His sigh of relief was audible over the phone. I stashed it in the safe until he returns in three weeks' time.

"What do you drink?" was his last question.

Cheers.

I've never tried Grange. Is it worth the hype and the money?

You don't drink it. It's an investment so nobody knows now, it might be a cheap red.

I managed to buy some a few years ago, have drunk the 88 and 91. 90 was Max Schuberts last vintage so is quiet expensive. I have an 89 and 90 waiting for that Special occasion that never happens. Amazing how many people turn up for a sip when they get opened. My 88 was superb, mate's 91 was just awful. Pot luck.
Rossko, we might have to do the 89 next time you are around. Probably crppy but might go on some chips.

TWB s idea looks the goods especially in winter.

In fact they were brown. BMW City Pants.

Thanks. I thought briefly of playing with him, saying the jacket sold straight away, but a strong sense of desperation over the phone brought me back. His relief and thanks were satisfaction. He is on a trip he's desired since riding for four years round the world, mid-'80s onward on a clapped out R80G/S with zebra striped large tank.

Andy Kilchmanm is his name. His ragged old bike hung for many years by heavy chain from the rafters of Ride West BMW in Seattle. Some of you will remember the bike. It lives on display at South Sound Motorcycles near Tacoma, nowadays.
