Hey all,

I am new to the forum, and new to BMWs. I have owned about 10 newer model sport bikes, and I am pretty handy with them. However, I am going to look at a 1987 k100LT today, and I was wondering if there was anything in particular that I should look for?

From everything that I've read these are very reliable bikes, but the one I am looking at has about 150k on it. I am not sure if there are any common issues, aside from the usual stuff, like tires, oil, gear transitions, etc. that I should look for.

Also, the bike is priced at 1000, and I'm told it runs and drives great. Is this a fair price for the bike, or should I be looking for something cheaper?

Many thanks in advance!!

Best,
Nate

150k is not very much for these machines, they really do last a long time. If you have any problems ask, as there are a great bunch of guys here willing to help as they have a fantastic collective knowledge.

Hi Nate
If you're looking a buying a K then you couldn't go past a read of the excellent resouces linked off the Portal page.

When checking out the LT have a good look around the fairing and mounts as they can disintegrate a little after nearly 30 years. The fairing mounts on the front bracket can sometimes break away but the fairing seems ok. Give it a tug and see if there's any movement or creaking.

Another part that is subject to the march of time is the front brake master cylinder. Water in the brake fluid over time (if not changed regularly) can cause corrosion. Have a look for weeping and stripped paint around the master cylinder components.

Splines might also be a consideration.

Enjoy the ride
