Hello everyone. New member to the forums living in Australia, NSW Sydney/Southern Highlands. I have just purchased a 1989 K100RS from eBay and waiting for delivery from interstate. I had a K100RS for a short time in the '90s, but got rid of it when I started a family.

My other project is a 1982 Honda CB900F that I a doing a complete restoration on.

Looks like the forum here is friendly with lots of good information and advice!

The CB is a naked red bike, not the coke can red with fairing (though I would love to get hold of one of those!)

The aim is for the Brick to be my daily rider while I get the CB back on the road. When that is done, I can do any tidy up work on the brick and have two classic bikes in great condition.

Oh, and my son is 19 and interested in riding. Just has his learners permit. When he graduates to a full licence, we will be able to ride the two bikes together. He is now the same age as I was when this photo of me was taken in the '80s:




Oh, and yes, the avatar is a Yak 52. I am in a syndicate with 4 other guys in the Southern Highlands

I got my license on one of those coke cans. Borrowed it from a mate.
Passed first go then up the old highway to gosford and back down the freeway as fast as the bike would go (no p plates back then).
Not ridden one since.

When I purchased the Honda last year, I was actually looking for a Brick, but could not find a good one. The Honda reminded me of my youth (see photo above!), so I bought it, thinking it was in good conditiion with no work required. Well, soon after getting it, I noticed the brakes were bad and getting worse. No problem! A quick brake rebuild and I will be back on the road. Well, as you start taking things off and noticing other 'little' things that require attention, next thing you know the engine is out and the frame is at the powdercoater!

Anyway, it being off the road was the excuse to my wife that I 'needed' a bike that was roadworthy while I was tinkering in the garage  She is a good sport and did not give me too much grief about it. She has a scooter licence and rides a 150cc modern Vespa to work every day (and dare I say it, I commute on a 250cc Vespa). She will be able to ride alongside on the 250 Vespa while my son and I ride on the Brick and the CB.

Definitely listen to Indian036. He even came to Ireland to meet some fellow K riders. Had a most pleasureable day back in March....he travelled pillion with me on some rather varied roads. So if you have the urge and are up this way do let us know.

I notice RT is from Robertson (just down the road) and indian036 is in Goulburn. Any place you guys recommend for service or parts if I get in a pinch? I plan on servicing what I can myself.

Also, I will need to get new tyres to get the bike registered in NSW. The Honda dealer in Mittagong was quite reasonable fitting a new Pirelli Demon to the from wheel of my Honda (it was already off the bike). Any other recommendations? I have read the tyre recommendations on the site here. Looks like people are recommending going with Pirelli Demons for cross ply tyres and BT023 110/80-18 front, Avon Azaro 140/80-17 rear in the radials.

Lastly, I have never purchased a vehicle from interstate before. Any tips on getting it re-registered in NSW (it has a current SA registration).

They're a pretty easy machine to service and repair yourself especially with the forum as a brains trust. Read everything on the Electronic Ignition Troubleshooting page on the Portal tab and all will be revealed. Really all you need to do is change the fluids and filters regularly, brake fluids and pads, keep a check on all the rubber bits (at 25 to 30 yo it starts to perish) and maintain your battery including keeping all the connectors and earth connection very clean. You'll be very lucky to find a mechanic who knows what they are doing on a K.

Tyre options are limited. Some of us here buy them from the states. There are plenty of posts about tyres.
Bias ply options... Batlax BT45 or LaserTec. I'm not sure you'd get a Demon in the right size???
The BT-023 is still available but been superceded by T30
I was looking at tyres this evening and noticed the Azaro AV46 radial is NLA from Rockymountain in the States. If you can find one locally, grab it.

The brick arrived today. No surprises. After 5 days transport on back of truck, it started instantly. Previous owner kindly included some extras. There was a new clutch cable and throttle cable and also a cover for the bike.





Has a YSS rear shock



Not sure what these items are. Any clues?





Lastly, fairing does not look to be quite aligned with the bike. Is this an easy thing to adjust?



Happy to say that all of the instruments appear to work fine, including the gear indicator and clock.

The fairing mounts on a brace attached to the head tube of the frame. It should be easy to align the fairing by bending the arms of the brace.

Good to see you are now in possession of your K. 
NSW rego will require a blue slip, which is simply a pink slip roadworthy , with the added recognition of clean titles ie; REVs check. 
I'm fairly sure you can do a check online yourself , though the checking station will do it as well. hope it goes well in that side of things.

Considering you have a spare set of mirror clips , it may be that the PO had a mishap and your front mounting brace behind the headlight may have suffered a bump at some stage , possibly worth a look when you get the chance. could explain the off centre position you have noticed in the fairing.

As mentioned , the invite is always there for a meetup , or post an invite of your own. enjoy the K.

 Good question! I did not even recognise the mirror mounts

Issues identified in the answers above may have something to do with the loose mirror on the right side. Mirror mount is sound, but the mirror feels slightly loose and vibrates somewhat. Left mirror is rock solid.

Bike is old, and the price was very reasonable, so I do not expect it to be perfect.

Also of note is one of the previous owners removed the ABS.

First ride to was to motorcycle workshop to give them a 'heads-up' regarding tyres and blue slip.

It's fuel line (it written on there)...battery breather tube perhaps?

You have spare mirror mounts because you have mirror extenders fitted (between the fairing and the mirror pod). This will give you more vision behind you and less of your elbows!

The RS mirrors have 3 "clamps" on each pod to attach it to the fairing. If the mirrors are removed and replaced a few times, these clamps can open up a bit and therefore not clamping as tight as they should. That's why the mirror pods appear loose.

These clamps are still available to buy and are relatively easy to replace.

DeoxIT (note the correct spelling you mob). Available from Jaycar. $24.95 for a kit. Use the red stuff on every goddamn connector/switch contact/earth point on the bike. Removes any oxidation and actually enhances conductivity. Safe on all plastics.

Oh yeah, RS's look good when they're painted red. Hint, hint.

Yeah. thought it looked like a fuel line but couldn't work out what it was doing there!
Its got a hose clip on the end. Looks like it should be removed before it falls into the wheel at 100kph

I will check out the hose tomorrow when I get back home and report back.

The right mirror pod is secure, just the actual mirror glass moving around within the pod. I found a post on motorbrick that describes problem and a fix. I will look to see if the mounting clip inside the pod for the ball joint on the mirror is there http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=1164.0

This shows the clip fitted, I lost a few before I knew about this.

Well, I traced out the routing of that pipe. It is not hanging down, that hose clip attaches it to the shaft drive/swingarm. It then goes up and over, cable tied to the front of the rear fender facing down with an open end. So, not knowing much about the bike, it looks like a breather?

No, Olaf, if you look at the first pic, it comes from a fitting on the swing arm.

That was my error. I was referring to the photo taken from the left side showing the pipe by the lifting handle. Now I see it is the other end of the pipe you refer to. My battery breather pipe is in that location.

The pipe on the swing arm and your comment about oil in the swing arm is a mirror of what I spoke with 88KE about last week wondering why does one not drill a small hold and introduce oil into the swing arm to provide some lube for the universal joint and splines....... It seems an interesting thought.

What a great idea SCP. You should look in to that

Could be it's just a breather to try to air the inside of the swingarm. I found on mine that the rubber boot on the front of the swingarm was not properly engaged and there was evidence of water inside.

Firstly, welcome to the forum Chris. Nice bike. 

I had a leaky gearbox output seal which 1/4 filled the swing arm at one stage! Gave me a shock when I removed the final drive one day....

It would leak around the rubber boot at the gearbox end of the sing arm. Not sure it that was oil leaking from the output seal and then some of it immediately leaking out the boot....or of the boot leak was from the oil in the swing arm being sloshed around and leaking out the boot. Would need consideration if one was going to intentionally fill the swing arm.
