I'm going to do another big ride in the US spring but unfortunately the K75 is in Buena Vista CO and i know fr experience (Molas pass almost snowing in July 2010) that this is about the coldest pick up point i could have.

I look at WEATHERCENTRAL.COM and today (6.20pm) it's 18F (N E corner of CO) That's 14 below freezing, and since I can't bring thermal gear with me (apart fr padded overtrou) I will have to wait until the day temp gets to 60F.

Is there a US site where i can get historical temp info so that i can make some call about when I should aim to get there. Or can a CO local give me an idea of april/may temps.

If there are "weather windows", then I could wait a couple of days, and then whip down the 285 to Santa Fe and get myself into something warmer in NM or Texas (or am I dreaming)

When I lived in New Mexico we'd often be able to ride into Colorado as early as April. Springtime has a wide range in the mountains and desert of the South West. Buena is far enough east that it'll be much drier than Durango or Grand Junction on the Western Slope. You shouldn't have to go anywhere near Molas Pass (11,000 feet) from Buena Vista. I'd shoot east towards Cañon City then down I-25 towards Albuturquee if the weather is ripe. The winds are a potential problem in that region from March into April, too. A fun time can be had.

December 27th we had our Christmas Brunch. Most of us took the bikes and were well rewarded with sunshine and just one shower. About 230 miles round trip.

We can ride all year except for only occasional days of frost that never stay frosty for long. You can buy a Guinness all year except for 2 days! You can ride all year.

So you need a pick up point about 4,000 miles east of CO!!

lol!  I'd be gobsmacked if your vistas can match those of Colorado, and we have some very fine ales here in the colonies too. Very Happy
Colorado is a beautiful place to ride, but the huge changes in elevation pretty much require you to be prepared for anything.  I've been very, very cold in August there, and I've ridden during times when you couldn't ask for more perfect weather. I'll be happy to look around for historical weather data, but off the top of my head I'd say that everything turns on your route.  Ride over any of the high passes and it's likely to be chilly if not downright freezing.  The key is picking your route carefully and monitoring the weather, as yearly averages can be deceiving.
If I were planning a route, I'd take Interstate highway 70 west/southwest over toward Grand Junction, which is in a valley.  Check out the Colorado National Monument, a stone's throw to the west and then proceed south until you can take one of the byways into Utah.  If you've never ridden in southern Utah, you should do that this Spring (not to take anything away from the riding in Colorado, which is spectacular).
Good luck.  Your in for some wonderful times.

tks for the info guys

Yes Twb, that's the plan - head south fr BV along the 285 to Alamosa and then to L Vegas on the 25.
This route looks as if it's a valley formation rather than passes.

I never thought of going over the Molas pass again, just used that to illustrate that i have experienced cold weather even in summertime. I did not have the right sort of gear if it had worsened from light sleet to snow.
However I will be doing this ride differently - not being driven by a "ride schedule" and rather than taking more gear for bad weather, just heading somewhere else (or adopting the "motel contingency" plan.

92KK ....O
Hmmmmm. Last time i was there the report card in the weather section read "room for improvement". People great.

Brickrider. Idaho was great. I rode over the Teton pass - spectacular ride - and down alongside the Snake river. I'll attach the page fr my ADV ride report because I had an interesting experience finding a place to kip that night.

I'll probabaly go back to B V toward the end of my ride, so will do the Utah stuff then, when weather is warmer, and fin in L A.

Any weather info will be great. All I get is WC and the tales of drivers on the Truckers Report staying overnight at the Truck stops and not being allowed to idle until it drops to 20F. I'd be dead by then.

There are a few lower elevation passes after Alamosa, but if you try to keep to an easterly route out of the mountains. It would be tempting to head straight south towards Taos then onto Santa Fe but above there is where you'd likely hit snow. Better to be on a more major route, even if it involves Raton Pass, like I-25. Once into NM the road opens up and while there's a chance of precipitation it's pretty clear shot to Albuquerque, which sits at about 1500+ metres (5,000') elevation, and beyond where the sun 'always' shines, the roads are sweet and the weather's mainly fine. We have members in NM as well so perhaps some assistance could be had there.

I'm in Albuquerque, NM.
Don't hesitate reaching out if you need anything at all!

Also, I've used http://www.currentresults.com/Weather/Colorado/average-annual-temperatures.php to try to gather average temps for particular months before.
