I've recently bought two bikes (one white & one blue), both have been sitting unridden for about 4 years. After putting in a new battery in the white one it started and is running well.

The blue one needs more work, I've been struggling to get it to go, finally decided to swap a few bits from the white to the blue bike as a trial and error method of finding the problem. None of of the combinations of equipment made a difference until I swapped tanks, the blue runs with the white tank.

So I figure that it must be the fuel filter or pump, this brings me to my question, any info on checking both of these out would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gundy
My first thought is 'listen'
I can hear the pump run on mine when i crank it and
if you cant hear it on yours thats an indication.
It nake a soft 'whining' noise ( a pommy pump? Have two K100's one going, and one not going! Icon_lol )
If the fuel level is low open the cap and remove the 4 screws
holding the cap assembly and you can rummage about inside
the pump is on the LH side sitting in a holder
If yer lucky it may just need a degunge

heres a link to help you

Hi Gundy,

There is a bit of an issue with these pumps and the rubber damper they sit in as it tends to degrade over time.
So as above the fuel pump is quite noticeable when running but does not operate until the starter is pressed.
Fuel filter you should be able to blow through so best thing would be to remove both and test externally being well aware of sparks and fuel etc. Have two K100's one going, and one not going! Affraid

Also the connector to the pump for continuity.

Phil

Thanks Phil

I pulled the pump out today and what a mess. Bits of rubber everwere I think I well replaced the filter and pump and return line hose.

Make sure if you replace the in tank hose that you either buy the genuine BMW hose or you buy hose intended for in fuel tank use. Many fuel hoses have petrol resistant liner rubber and non petrol resistant outer sheath, and they break down inside the tank due to being immersed in petrol.

Go here , it is my file sharing site (recommended by Bert) and download the fuel pump article. And anything else you may want.
A cheap but effective replacement. This is a copy of a K bikers experience.
