This is an Australian bulletin, but is probably valid world wide, or at least worth checking.

Dates back to 2002

Rear wheel flange recall which has over 330,000 bikes worldwide included in its scope. No part numbers available yet. Three more weeks, BMWNA are saying. We saw it back in 2004/5 on the K1200R/S/GT and on GSs. Some customers paid for the repair. They will be reimbursed. This will cost BMWAG heaps in terms of money and bad publicity, but at least BMW own up to their known issues, even after prodding. It is only for the 'hollow centred' final drives, which were never fitted to any K75/K100/K1100/K1200RS/GT - Brick.

Not sure BMW in the UK are calling it a recall at the moment, but I've seen a few now. Some cracked where the disc is bolted on and some where the wheel bolts are fixed.

If I look at the BMW Repair CD for the R1200GS models, it does refer to both an aluminium and a steel wheel flange. The steel being the replacement. The have two different BMW pullers for removal. Wonder if this 'recall' will fit the same steel flange?

I wish BMW had owned up to the crap servo system introduced on the R1150 models and recalled mine!
(Residual braking indeed Evil or Very Mad)

It is a worldwide recall that affects some 367,000 bikes, with just under 44,000 in the US alone, officially beginning on 21 April, 2015. BMW UK will be along for the ride shortly.

Here's a short report.

"The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) report also describes the events leading up to the recall. According to BMW, they became aware of the issue on August 6, 2014 following an accident in Spain with a “high mileage” 2004 R1200RT. That customer’s motorcycle was reviewed further and by January 2015 found to be in “overall good condition, and that the customer had performed all required services” with BMW concluding cracks in the rear wheel flange were due to “excessive applied torque during servicing.”
Also in January, BMW inspected 58 customer motorcycles (with 2,500 to 40,000 miles on them) in Munich, Germany and found three with flange cracks. These parts were tested in a laboratory and found to also have received excessive tightening.
BMW therefore decided on February 5, 2015 to notify customers of a “service action.” Prompted by a letter from the German regulatory authority, BMW decided on March 5 to conduct a voluntary recall. BMW has received one report of an accident related to this issue with the rider and passenger experiencing bruises and abrasions."

Thanks TWB,

There is one owner here in the UK BMW Club, that uses calibrated Britool torque wrenches and even he has cracks in the flange of his 2006 R1200RT.

Did BMW only fit the steel flange to the GS version?
