Realise you've just gone though a speed trap Shocked , turn round, go back and ask them how fast you were going. Turns out LFB's speedo is spot on at 31mph! Not bad for a 32 year old bike.

Next question: what was the speed limit at that point?

Gutsy move Dai!

Don't think I would risk it....just in case they took it as an admission of guilt!!
I rely on my GPS for accurate speed read out, but the speedo does tie in pretty closely.

Round these parts, we also get those irritating community speed awareness devices strapped to random lamp-posts as you come into a reduced speed limit zone - usually with big flashing yellow "Your Speed" numbers - irritating as they are (cos they flash and distract), they do provide a handy check calibration for the speedo.

I believe they are not put there to see how fast you can go....besides they only seem to go up to 99mph.

Oh, they were busy pulling over cars. As it was midnight+20, my guess is they were also after drink-drivers. It probably makes me sound like a goody-goody but I rarely exceed the speed limit in built-up areas by more than two or three mph. I prefer the potential reaction time to the speed.

If you were in Victoria (Aust), you'd probably have been fined. Their tolerance is so small that you spend all your time looking at the speedo, at the cost of attention to the road and the traffic!

Don't the UK police allow you 10% plus 2MPH over before they nicked you, or that a myth? John

Probably an urban myth - I think we are given a little more latitude than other draconian country's police forces, but wouldn't like to put it to the test. A lot of it is down to how you're driving/riding, where you are and how other people are driving around you. If you're speeding past a school at school time, you get what you deserve.

Most amusing recently when our local mayor, who is trying to reduce most of Bristol to a ridiculous 20mph speed limit, got caught speeding by the police (doing 35 mph in a 30mph limit).

I got pulled over in my car travelling up to Scotland (a few years back) doing exactly 50mph in a 50mph limit through road works - I spotted the police lurking at the road side and then suffered an excruciating 4 mile drive through the road works (at night) until he finally blue lighted me and pulled me over. Allegedly, one of my brake lights was out - very perceptive as I never touched my brakes once until his blue lights went on! I think he was just bored and he knew that I had clocked him and slowed down just in time, but just wanted to make me sweat!!

In Canada, we have better way to check our speed.
This video was released yesterday. I was under the impression that inside a Walmart shopping center, the speed limit was 2km/h

You've possibly picked that up from the speedometer requirements: accurate at 30mph and then +/-10% from 40mph onwards. The other possibility is fixed traffic cameras. In line with the Construction and Use Regulations for speedo accuracy, above 30mph a fixed camera triggers at speed limit plus 10% plus the local council's variation. That meant that in Belfast the four 40mph fixed cameras triggered at 53mph (40 + 4 + 9) and you get done for at least 53mph. However, I understand that the variation has been dropped to 5mph in the last year.

With radar guns the police do tend to take a reasonable attitude. At about +5mph you're likely to get a slapped wrist and a good telling off, unless (as BAE says) you're outside a school or similar.

Here, if you speed in a school zone, the fine is $800, 4 demerit points (When you lose 8, you have to take a course again) and 2 weeks of driver license suspension. On the top of that, your insurance will likely increase for the next 7 years.

Holly smoke... sounds harsh, $800 is a lot of money, and the rest a pain to...
Here they recently decided to cut our 10% over leeway to zero, towns are 50 an 60 kph, open road 100, so everyone being used to a 10% + a bit leeway have been forced to rethink, an slow down, radar detectors are allowed, I run a TPX unit currently, but only use it out of town, as we all know its very hard to keep under the limit on these bikes, demerit points, hefty finds, and 3 month + licence suspension time is common, the bigger the speed the bigger the penalty, above 146kph on the open road, or 46 over anywhere, and you walk as they impound the vehicle on the spot...

Most of the politicians still seem to have the misguided idea that if you hang someone 3 times it will prevent others from committing murders.
But I could of course be cynical and say it is just revenue raising and as one of Australia's longest serving independent senators once said "never get between a politician and a bucket of money it is a very dangerous place".
