...to replace your OEM 32/33 amp jobbie:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bmw-k1100-breaking-Spares-Alternator-Project-K100-Project-/151853839945?hash=item235b31b649:g:29UAAOSwgQ9Vlr06

At that price (£25) it's a steal (before you ask, I've got two in the roof. Three spares would be erm... overkill?).

I've added it to my watch list but do I really need the extra amps?

Well, Will, if you really want I can convert it to a 60amp alternator for you. Does that take it into the 'gotta haveit' class yet?

Dai,

Would this slip straight into a '90 16v no problem?

Im thinking as a spare.

Good grief - I'm surprised it's still there!!!

Yes and no. Physically yes, it will bolt straight in but the ends of the power (fat red cable) and regulator (thin blue wire) are ring terminals rather than a single plug. If you really just want an alternator for a spare, PM me as I'm swimming in 33amp alternators. You can have one for the price of postage.

I had mine out 2 weeks ago to do my monkey nuts. Now my question is 'How reliable is the alternator on the K bikes?' My instinct is that everyone is swimming in them because they are reliable...?

Not quite; at least, not in my case. I've ended up with four of them because I swapped them out for 50amp ones.

In a word yes....I'll be planning a spin up to "Counny Dain" when I get back from France so! Will PM you nearer the event. Do I need to buy any bits? New regulator?

Hi Will

No, it's a pretty straightforward conversion. I know I've PM'd you but for anyone else, you need a spare 60amp alternator too. Gut both of them, then fit the armature and the stator from the 60amp one into the 50amp casing. Don't bolt them up at this point because you'll cause the bearings to bind. Where the three long bolts attach the front of the case to the rear, drop a 5mm washer over the bolts between the case ends. Now you can tighten them up.

Dammit - that means I'm going to have to bid on this one!!!! Mad Very Happy

Alternatively (sorry.... Very Happy ) Motorworks will do you one for £125.
