I have noticed from looking at a few photos of peoples K's that I appear to have a totally different seat to any other I have seen!

Instead of the grab handles for the pillion rider being part of the rear panel, they are actually on the seat and come up when the seat is lifted for access to the relay box, etc.

Was this a standard seat on only certain models or have I got a rather strange/rare bike?

Question

Up to 85 the hsndles are on the seat. Then the seat and the rear moulding were changed to have the handles in the rear moulding instead of the seat. I think August 85.

Your VIN seems much earlier than 86. Mine is 0022575 and is August 84.

Meaning the seat with the handles is the correct one......also has the older gas tank that is held down with the single bolt at the rear......watch that if you are buying parts.

Also the later seat bases with the separate handles are wider than the earlier ones.

I didn't know that but it explains why the 84RT is much more manageable in town than the 92LT......and puts paid to my thoughts of putting a later seat on the RT.....wider is not good for me.

Corkboy had a very nice seat on his K1100LT when we met last Saturday...got it done locally so its called a Munster seat. Pat O'D got his done in the same place and he is to be recommended.

It's not by much Olaf. I bought a complete s/h RS body kit to (eventually) make LFB look something like respectable; what I didn't realise until I got it home was that it was off a later K100 - possibly even an 8V model. I found out when I pulled the tank for cleaning. Much later still I discovered that the seat hump with the separate handles was wider too.

It wasn't the disaster it could have been because I got them off John Tilley and he's quite happy to swap them for the earlier versions. I really should pull the wee finger out and do that.

The LT was marginal for me on height, especially as it had the Comfort seat which I love. The difference to the RT was therefore very big and I found the RT much more manageable in town and in tight spaces. Was the same reason I once upon a time had to settle for the Honda CB500-4 instead of the CB750-4.

That has made up my mind on seats and seeing what Corkboy's looked like that's what I will go for.
We missed you at the Brunch but am sure you will make up for that. Are you feeling any better?

I was most impressed with Corkboy's seat and sorry I didn't picture it for future reference.

Best way to describe it is; a Comfort seat which has had the Rider's seat sculpted to the shape of a Corbin (but softer) whilst leaving the pillion one as standard. This has the effect of making the front look rounder, The back squarer and a more visible step in the levels from back to front. All neatly recovered in Black upholstery.

It doesn't have that style of tank. The tank has no bolts holding it down. It has two 'pins' (for want of a better word) that locate into two rubber grommets in the frame.

Is my bike a 'BITSA'?

I went to a different one, www.bmbikes.co.uk and it gives 06/85 for manufacture date for a K100 Basic.

This version was used from 04/85, so it's correct for your model.

Ah right.

So was the change over for the seat slightly later than that of the tank then?

If so it would show that mine was made in that 'window' of overlap.

Your version of seat was used until 09/85, which I think 92 earlier have mentioned.
That is the point for the model year change.
