Late last week a plan hatched for a ride and night's camping with Olaf, Bjorn and Myself.

Olaf got away friday night and Saturday morning I took the scenic route, not all by choice (note to self: sometimes closer to home you need a map too Embarassed ) . I arrived at the Nore valley campsite, Where I pitched the new tent I was eager to tryout. After coffee in the sunshine we hit the road west.

We planned to ride "The Vee" a nice scenic run with a couple of switchbacks in the Comeragh mountains which would lead us down to Lismore (No we didn't go to Queensland - we went to the
Original)  and on to Dungarvan where we would hook up with Bjorn after his work on Saturday.

The weather deteriorated slightly but we enjoyed the run nonetheless, rarely having to suffer more than moderate drizzle. After a bit of steak shopping and meeting with Bjorn and his daughter Gerda we galloped back up the motorway to the campsite where we lit Olaf's BBQ and enjoyed a steak dinner and some Bratwurts from our Saxon friend.

Turning in about 11.30 I slept like the proverbial log before breaking camp early to sprint on to the next part of my adventure weekend - a "First Bike On Scene" emergency responders course, more about that in another thread. I left the guys to their own devices and a nice day ahead.

Saturday's route... (there should be a link form Lismore to Dungarvan)

of course we did a bit of sight seeing and stopped next to Cahir Castle to picnic under a tree. Olaf's Hapco and Becker top box serving as catering unit and picnic table.

As we approached the Vee the clouds opened to let dry, bright light through and we couldn't help laughing that the k100 weather god had worked his magic again.

Olaf is a Jedi Master of Packing. He managed to get in, using his "pack no air" technique,

  • 3 man tunnel tent
  • double air bed
  • foot pump
  • gas stove
  • BBQ & stand
  • sleeping bag
  • cuttlery and cooking utensils for 4
  • groceries
  • clothers washbag towel and spare shoes
  • torch tools etc etc etc

....and nothing was outside his panniers. Now that takes years of practice!

looking forward to the next one already!

Hi Will,
Sound's great and makes me more inclined to root out my unused small tent....
I didn't see any photo's you mentioned "Here's some pics from the day..."
Maybe I need to wait a little longer.

On the subject of camping and gear what do you usually carry for cooking and where do you store it.
Must be very compact and your tent too !
or maybe you rely on local shops etc for food etc

Ok, the stove is a Vango compact Gas Stove. Comes in its own plastic carry case 46 x 46 x 105mm and weighs in at 103 grammes or just under 4 ounces with room inside the case for a cigarette lighter. Two of these fit in the storage compartment under the seat as does an LED torch with spare batteries and more. The stove uses a standard gas canister which will sit inside a small saucepan. Its worth having 2 of these and they are cheap.
The BBQ comes in its own hard plastic case about 400 x 300 x 60mm which will also hold the charcoal [if you want but it can usually be bought at destination] and tools and cleaner and fits inside top box. If you line it with foil before use it makes it much easier to clean afterwards.
I found a perfect set of cooking pots [Coleman] but unfortunately they were aluminium. However they make the same set in stainless steel so have asked for one of these. Leave the kettle at home and put a gas canister in its place.

The tent is a standard tent but with a larger space outside the sleeping area so you can spread out wet gear and store panniers, flysheet pitch first [essential if its wet so everything stays dry.], then put down groundsheet, then the inner. Tunnel is generally easier to erect but both Will and Bjorn had dome tents and erected them single handed.

If you have the standard pannier inner bags [essential] the bellows type foot pump fits neatly in the smaller pouch, in the main part at the back goes first in the airbed [use the pump to suck air out when you deflate it to shrink it flat], then the tent inner, then the groundsheet rolled tightly, then the flysheet outer. Pegs fit in there too. No room for much else apart from spare tent pegs. That's first pannier taken care of. If camping in the wet only the flysheet comes out, then after its erected pannier can be taken inside and the rest done in the dry. If you are packing up in the wet everything will be more or less dry apart from the flysheet. Pack a thin plastic bag so if its wet you can stuff the wet flysheet into it. When you get home air everything. Decision made to get a second pannier bag and leave this stuff stored in a pannier bag ready for use any time.

Second pannier bag took washbag in the pouch, main part took rolled up sleeping bag, towel, spare clothes, phone charger and personal items etc. Keeping everything in the pannier bag makes for a neat tent too.

Top box I use a standard soft bag. In the bottom goes the BBQ, after that cookware, gas, some melamine plates, bowls, cups that fit inside each other, tea/sugar container that fits inside cups with just enough for the weekend, salt and pepper [cant do without it] leaves enough room in top box for the food items when you are near destination. Top box also takes the tent poles diagonally. It will also take two folding seats.

The trick is that you do not pack air at all.

The idea of having all inside the panniers is a degree of security if you are travelling plus it should keep everything dry. A wire lock through the pannier handles and the top box carrier prevents removal of the panniers [or accidentally falling off] and also is somewhere to lock a helmet and bike gear on [thread it through sleeve and legs] when you stop for coffee.

Here endeth this post....

Olaf

Sunday brought about a nice warm day so we all 4 breakfasted on the remainder of the BBQ, croissants and fruit we had bought the day before.

Will 88KE then headed off for a nice run up to Port Laoise.

Bjorn, Gerda and myself wandered a little on foot, Gerda went to see all the animals. http://norevalleypark.com/ Camp site was great, will be back there again.

Our first stop was a Reptile Zoo at Gowran, a short 30 minute run up the motorway J7/M9. Irelands only reptile zoo and an excellent experience. http://reptilevillage.net/. Where else would you see a sign that reads 'Bold Children are fed to the Crocodiles'

Our next stop was the Waterford and Suir Valley Railway www.wsvrailway.ie for a scenic train ride alongside the river. Construction work was ongoing at one of the railway cuttings and this entertained our junior member. We had been warned it was a fairy building site, that fairies were building houses in the trees and building roads between them. Impressive work. Before we went on the train ride we stopped and got food for lunch and made a picnic lunch at the train depot in the company of Mini Mouse and her friends.

We eventually left here for what was now a 50 minute run back home for Bjorn and a little longer for me since I had to stop at Bjorn's for tea.......

What a great ride report and some excellent tips on M/C camping. I have a Trangia stove from Sweden which is really compact as everything packs inside the stove and it runs on methylated spirit which is very widely available. http://www.trangia.se/english/2916.start.html there is even a movie showing it in use.
Regards,

The Trangias are excellent if you use the meths ones as you recommend rather than the solid fuel ones. I just found the little Vango so small it fits in the tiniest of spaces. I will add a folding/roll up table and 2 seats with the proviso all must fit in the panniers or topbox. I am also making 2 racks to go on the panniers. Before I was old enough for a motorbike I used go on a bicycle and always had compact lightweight gear. I don't have a tankbag. The secret was 'never pack air' learnt in Boy Scouts.

I got a tip today from a friend, he recommended a dry battery that's half the physical size of the standard and make a storage compartment to fill out the space so the coolant bottle remains in place. He welded one up out of black plastic sheet. Clever. Of course the battery could be relocated to the tail storage compartment. Its got me thinking. . . . . Inside the fairing between the storage boxes and the headlight. . .

Ha Bjorn I had completely forgotten about those balloons....they travelled fully inflated in the top box. I had to take back all I said about 'not packing air when going on a trip' Was worth it though.

Maybe we should mention that we stopped for a train ride too.......

On a serious note (said he moving along swiftly An impromptu ride and camping 652573 ) don't rule out a K75 Ultima if you come across one. Fully Loaded right up to the electric screen and the super smooth 3 cyl engine is quite a livlely ride plenty of go for touring.

I have seen a few K75 Ultima bikes and yes they look good. Firs tone of those I saw was up in Galway, stopped in Spiddal for petrol and the guy in the petrol station asked me to come round the back. Funny thoughts entered my head until I saw two of them parked side by side and in excellent condition. Very impressive machines.

Ended up with an R1150RT. Not exactly what I was looking for but I just did not want to waste more time for viewings. Also it came at a price that I could not let it pass.... The only thing wrong with it is radio remote controls don't work as having an aftermarket mp3 player built in Smile

BTW we just have to keep a boxer in the team otherwise you may get under the impression that there is only one bike - the K Smile

While Pat and Cluain Si were enjoying a run today I ended up at Bjorn's for a look at the new steed. We too had intended joining the run but some last minute changes were posted up and we had lunch at Bjorn's.

The new wheels are indeed as good as they look in the photo.

The ride height needs a 'little' adjustment to make the footrests work for the 'rider'. Seems we are now set for more camping trips and I am on for one even in October if there are any nutters takers out there....The place [Nore Valley] in Kilkenny would be just perfect.

The Irish Eccentrics hardy campers would seem to be 88KE and 92KK for now. I detected some hesitation from Bjorn when the idea was mentioned today.

How about 18th October?? We are due a Stradbally meet as well and could make that 19th October, fit in rather nicely...!!

Well, I might be just a little too old for camping. You know, once bears reach a certain age they value heated caves with built-in waterfall at the back. That age in my case came at around 10 Very Happy  But wait until you reach my age, young fella lol!

As I see my weekends now my only chance for the 19th if I try to bribe our schedule office.... On the other hand I may fell terrible in the morning, unable to go to work but if I improve during the morning I may just Surprised-o:  Nore Valley as a destination is always welcomed by the bearcubs.

Well, better keep the bike on a strict diet so Very Happy  They are getting big nowadays.

BTW I can only get in myself with the belly pulled in... On the other hand, I'm the only one in the family who can take her off the centre stand so I have to. Leaving her out in the rain is no option. Maybe a bigger shelter next summer.

Hi Tom.....

There is a thread for 19th October.....and the Falcons Weekend at The Saratoga is posted on it........!!

Not sure about the camping but 88KE and myself have a plan afoot......

My gear is packed but I am nursing a sick K which has developed a rather significant oil leak following some damage weekend before last. The bugger says 'I hardly touched it'. His 'hardly touched it' launched it off the road, leaning left on sidestand, clean off the road onto the footpath on the right and caught the oil pump/waterpump on the kerb on the way. It was completely oil tight beforehand and is now incontinent awaiting repair while we try to work out the cause of the leak.

You will be very welcome here.......

As for meeting up, well, our man up north, Comberjohn, has proven a dab hand at arranging good weather for meet ups....

As for caves, we moved out of them some time back.....we now live in a Knuthaus.

Quote of the year! Very Happy

After another year on the RT in all weathers, camping, trip up North, France and a weekend on the Shannon I have to say the K is brilliant for weather protection. After that just having the right gear makes such a difference. It doesn't have to be expensive either. Mine is Lidl, replaced by Aldi this year and never been wet. My only real change of plan this year was to skip Cap Ferret in France because there was no merit in being there in rainstorms. But the travel was no problem.

Plans are afoot for next year, am sure a few more Irish Eccentrics trips and a bigger group for France! Add a few camping trips and the annual trip up North and its a great year.

We had some good visitors too. Paul Lipscomb over at Easter and again for Norn iron trip. Mike over for a meet up at Craggy Island. Hopefully more next year.

The forum has made a big difference so we hope CF will make it over. We will treat him as he deserves. Needs and will be given a traditional Irish thorough internal clean out. We recommend copious quantities of Guinness for the bottom end and Jameson for the top end. Seems to work well, but leaves a lot of de feks afterwards. TacKler will get the same treatment!! Mind though, he did ask if we have any airports in Ireland. We might be tempted to tell him the Guinness ran out!!
