Anybody got an slick ideas on how to fit the white plastic fuel pump sleeve into the tank?
Pushing like hell on the pump but the thicker clip on the forward (and harder to get to) end
of the tank but it does not want to click in.  Thin rear clip will click in with screwdriver blade
pushing on it.

um .......
try turning it 180 degrees ?

I wrestled with that for the longest time when I changed out the fuel pump.  I finally gave up.  Only one side is fully home in the retaining ring.  A few thousand miles later, nothing bad has resulted from that. 
If you find the secret to getting that pump fully snapped into place, please let me know!

I can snap one side in and am about to leave it be.  Yes, I did rotate it 180 degrees.  There is a skinny clip and a fat clip.  Skinny clip is closer to the tank cap and will clip in.  Fat clip is hard to get at just wont clip.  Tried pushing in the fat side with a shorty flatblade screwdriver and even pushed the whole pump with a small breaker bar.  Rebuilding this bike and this should be the simplest of tasks.  Nothing to it....except it won't click in. The rubber vibration housing needs to compress but the trick is how.  More scraped knuckles tomorrow!

I found that I had to put the fat clip in first then the skinny one but it still took a lot of imaginative words.

+1 on what Rick said. The fat clip, forward side, needs to go in first as you can get more pressure on the skinny one at the rear nearer the tank opening with the appropriate amount of swear words to get it clipped in.



Yes, that's a non standard pump - Delphi 6443224 C2426-2 if anyone was wondering.

FINALLY got it in.  Fat end goes in first.  Then I took a stubby flatblade screwdriver and pushed down on the lip at the point closest to the thank.  It finally clicked in.  Took a long flatblade screwdriver and pushed on the lip of the skinny side and it clicked in much easier.

Someone told me if you let the rubber dry out for a day or so that it shrinks a bit and is easier to get in.  I haven't tried myself though.

Annoying problem, that. If you get the fuel pump at *exactly* the right angle it just drops in click-click. It took me about ten minutes to find that angle I don't appreciate having to breathe fuel fumes for that length of time.

Willie, your success inspired me to have another go at fixing my K100RS' fuel pump in the holder properly.  On close inspection I noticed that all the screws around the plastic collar were not snugged up consistently.  I tightened them, and in so doing compressed the gasket (?) material surrounding it.  That allowed me to finally snap the plastic tabs fully home. 
... feeling quite satisfied with myself just now
