Help! Bought a 32/11 drive box. Guy says it's from an '85 K100. It has 20 splines and mine has 16. Trans is a 16 spline. Shoulda researched this. Mid year change? Any alternatives? Universal joint and yoke look to be non-removable. Do I own a $150 20 spline boat anchor?

Can I just get a good 20 spline drive shaft and count on it having 16 splines on the transmission end?

After checking with realoem.com I saw that the drive shaft changed after 2/1986.  A further showed that the rear drive also changed after 2/1986.  The transmission output shaft appears to be the same all the way through the K1100's.  So it looks to me like you could get a before 2/1986 drive shaft and it should work.

Wow! That's great! Thank you!
But did you mean to say that a post 2/86 shaft will work with my 20 spline box and '85 transmission?

Yes, I believe you are right about a post 2/1986 drive shaft.  If you would like to double check my work, take a look at realoem.com.  The K100's are listed in the archive section.  Once you find a part number you can put it in "PART NR APPLICATION SEARCH"   to find out what other bikes it will fit.

On second thought you would need a pre 2/1986 drive shaft since you have a pre 2/1986 rear drive.

I just gave it another look.  I'm getting confused.  The supplemental information for pre 2/1986 is z-16.  I'm assuming that means 16 splines.  The supplemental for post 2/1986 says z - 20.

All the transmissions had a 16 spline output shaft
