Hi Guys,

The mainstand is killing my back - which is a bit knackered anyway. Has anyone found a permanent sidestand puck solution to give a bit more confidence the 'K' will stay upright? I reckon my sidestand is a bit worn at the pivot but I've done all I can to limit movement there.

Here's an example on another Beemer forum. Anyone tried something similar?

Here's mine Dave.

Permanent side stand puck Ssl10819

It's a block of plastic fixed to the base of the stand with two counterbored socket screws.
Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Paul,

That looks good. Any more details please? What exactly is a counter bored screw (forgive my ignorance).

As an aside I was hoping you'd be around - I see there are no fewer than TWO K100 outfits for sale on Ebay. If I had the cash I would be very tempted indeed.

hi dave ...yes i had done a similar thing to paul ...but using a bit of cheese cutting board (softish plasic ) and it worked well .

the plastic was about about 75mm x 60mm x 10 mm thick and fixed with 2 x 3mm stainless screws through the metal foot with nylock nuts .

it held the bike up more verticle and griped well ...previously the lean angle was a bit extreem ....giggle

since changing to the newer centre and sidestand the need has disapeared as the sidestand is much better

but you might be able to see it faintly in this pic

Thanks Charlie Very Happy

I was racking my brains for what sort of plastic might work - and a cutting/cheese board sounds good.

Will give it a go - increasing the size a bit over the standard foot would also inspire confidence but I guess will be limited by contact with the exhaust.

Thinking cap on...!

If I remember correct you got a 16V? Which have the same stands as the K11.

I did this mod on my K11 some years ago, added a 8mm thick piece of rubber.
I was very pleased with the result, it did follow the shape of the genuine foot exatly all around.
I did want a clean look...no screws or rivets....so I did use a strong glue.

And let it cure overnight with the bike resting on the sidestand..............
just to find out the next day that it wasn`t space enough for this with the sidestand folded up, it was hitting the lever on the centerstand.

Thanks Inge, yes it's a 16 valve.

As you suggest I'll certainly need to check what's feasible without fouling the exhaust or mainstand!

Glue is an attractive idea. I'm a great believer in Araldite Very Happy

I'll report back when I'm finished

Hi Dave,
The counterbore is just to recess the head of the screw. I tapped M6 into the foot of the stand.
Rubber might be a good option as Inge suggests, then it should be easy to trim if it catches on anything.

Yes, I've seen the two outfits on e-bay and there have been some good looking K's on offer recently.
Cheers,
Paul.

Yes, I remember now, I had to file a chamfer on the edge to clear the centre stand lever. This was, of course, with the early stand.

Yes Inge, I keep an eye on the stand because the bike's original stand rotted through from the inside. This stand is the one from the outfit which only had two year's use as a solo, so at the moment it is still sound (fingers crossed). When I fitted it I filled the tubes with waxoil.
Cheers,
Paul.

The reinforcement at the foot lever was changed after the model you now got,
it was left open in the ends.

But the newer model also breaks, don`t ask how I know....

Nice one Captain! Like the Avatar, you can't beat a bit of Trek. Very Happy

I was thinking of where I could get a block of hard rubber that would be a bit spofter than a plastic board - something like the material that makes the rubber bungs on the end of walking sticks!

Dave - go yo your local scrapper and get and old axle bump stop off a car or 4x4. I recon that would be ideal hard rubber and comes in round square and rectangular profiles, more than big enough to stand a bit of trimming.

I've just used a hard plastic, it's old use was an insert for bashing in those steel spikes for fence posts, filed it to a rough shape and angled so it clears the stand. Works ok in garage. . . if it lasts the week i'll post the pic's cheers

Hi Guys

Bought a jewellers dapping block for a fiver on Ebay. It's 1 inch thick rubber.

Permanent side stand puck Stand110

Cut a chunk out of it and then cut a bit more depth so the foot is a bit countersunk in the rubber. Just glued on for the moment with a couple of extra bits of rubber glued at right angles.

Permanent side stand puck Stand210

Bike angle is much less alarming and seems to clear the exhuast and mainstand. If the glue doesn't stand the test of time I'll look to bolt it to the stand but would rather leave that unmolested if I can.

Best
Dave

Cheers Charlie,
I'd like to get some very thin metal right angle clips that could be screwed in to the rubber and apply donward pressrue on to the metal foot. Think this would work well - kinda like the clips on a 'clip frame' picture frame. At the moment haven't found anything suitable but I'm sure soemthing will show itself sonner or later....
Hope the damaged arm heals up soon

Good thinking on the Dapping block Dave. That's good frim stuff.

If the glue doesn't hold try some black TEC7 it's got pretty amazing bonding capabilities. Better still try to find some builder or mechanic near you who has some open. Comes in a mastic/silicone sized tube - bot too pricey but a lot to open for a small job.

I had the K11 side/centrestand fitted to my old K100. I then modified the side stand by straightening the bend in it out a bit. I did something else to it but I can't remember now as that was years ago, all I can remember was it was a lot of mucking around that I didn't want to do again.. but it worked.

Permanent side stand puck K100sfront1003

On my K11 I fitted an Ice Hockey Puk, it was a lot easier to fit and being a dense rubber I was able to secure it to the side stand by screwing self tappers through the plate on the side stand into the Puk. It also grips the ground well also. I made a timber one first and shaped it so that it would not hit on the centre stand or muffler. This was a slightly slow process taking it on and off all the time, but when it was finally finished and cleared everything, I used it as the template to shape the Puk. The Puk was exactly the right thickness.

Permanent side stand puck SideStandPuck

Permanent side stand puck 8oclockview

Permanent side stand puck Foldedrearview

Permanent side stand puck K11RS003

I must admit that the process of shaping it was made a lot easier by a stand I made up for the rear wheel to fit into, this supports the bike in an upright position so no centre stand or side stand is needed. My version of a Racing Stand.

Das Seitenständerpuck. ( Der Ständer is the centrestand...) You can use the word Permanent in German....or dauerhaft.

Thus: Guten Tag, ich suche ein permanentes ( dauerhaftes) Seitenständerpuck für mein Motorrad, BMW K100 Baujahr...( insert exact model and year)
Aren't you glad you asked.......?

Well if you narrow the search a bit to "Seitenständer BMW", there are just 252 hits. With that a man can live Cool And there are "Big Foot Seitenständer Unterlage" but only for parking on the soft ground. Also "Wunderlich Seitenständer Auflagenvergrößerung", but only for K 1200 LT. Can THAT fit K 100 LT's foot???

As I said at another place, maybe the easiest way is simply to weld a piece of thick steel plate to my bike's foot...

I would be inclined not to weld a thick bit onto the foot as it could cause it to bounce down when you hit a few bumps but a thick piece of hard wood would do the job just as well, there is enough room for two small bolts.

Well such a piece of metal isn't too big, think the sidestand springs would still hold it. I am affraid wood would not make this "permanent side stand puck" permanent enough, and the same applies to plastic.

I´ve been thinking about the side stand modification, and the rubber extension is the one I prefer, but the fixing and deformation problems were troubling me. Glues and fasteners are not good solution to the shear stress at the side stand´foot plate when you use a rubber extension, also the rubber deformation was too much, so I came upon with this solution

Permanent side stand puck P5020393

Now the steel wall will bear the stress and the rubber deformation would be acceptable. The rubber can be instaled with contact cement
This is the stand with the rubber instaled, The insert protrudes about 3mm
Permanent side stand puck P5140410

Now the bike´s inclination is more pleasant and not as scary as before
Permanent side stand puck P5140418

Permanent side stand puck P5140419

There are many commercially produced sidestand footprint extenders available. Or one can fabricate a type like this using hard plastic shaped to clear the centrestand or exhaust and riveted in place:
Permanent side stand puck Sidest10

Or purchase a version which is shaped for specific stands, tapped and threaded like this:
Permanent side stand puck Sidest11

The Puck I have fitted is held on by two Self Tapping Screws and it's been that way without any signs of being torn off for about 4 years. The Puck is a very hard rubber that needed to be pre-drilled before the self tappers were screwed in.

I did the puck with two self taping screews - this afternoon. Good result, no blue smoke after siting on sidestand, for first time in ten years.

Cheers

I would need one as well. Asked Motorworks & Motobins if they have one available, the answer was negative

Nino, would it be possible that you get one for me too? Here in the bank should be no problem to get some Kunas, which I could put in the envelope to cover the postage & packing costs.
