I know that if you want a wider rear wheel the popular route is to get an 1100 rear.  This is 4.5" wide (i think) but I was wondering if anyone had put something a little bigger on.  I'm looking into a 5.5" rear wheel but am concerned about the swingarm clearance.

If i'm in uncharted waters I'll do my best and post up the results.

Thanks everyone

G'day Finnigan , when I fitted up a 4.5x18 rear rim with a 160/60/18 tyre to my K100RS I ended up with the following clearances : after grinding back the rib on the inside of the monolever , with the 2mm spacer removed I had 4mm between the tyre & monolever , on the other side after also grinding the left foot of the K1100 centre stand I was able to get 6mm of clearance , so in short pretty tight back there , you may be able to squeeze in a 170 section tyre at the biggest , just keep that in mind when you research fitting a 5.5inch ( x 17 inch ? ) rim

good luck with it

JR

There are posts on the K11OG forum (and I started one briefly on this forum) about fitting K1200 5-spoke wheels to the K100.  There are success stories where owners have fitted the 5X17 and 5.5X17 rear wheels.  The former requires modifications to the center stand and different bolts, and the latter requires that plus shaving parts off of the swingarm.  It is doable.

It's going on a paralever so I don't expect problems just a better selection of dual purpose tyres.

I have a 5.0 17" K1200 rear wheel fitted in my K100 16V running a 17" 160/70 BT023 tyre.  (I picked this up  wheel and new tyre for £63  Very Happy )

This fitted with no modifications at all.

I also have a 5.5 K1200 rear wheel with a 180 tyre but this appears to require a lot of modifications to make it fit so using the chart below I am going to try a 170 tyre.

Note the OD for 160/70 17" is very close to the OD for the original 18" tyre. 654 vs. 647 mm so hopefully speedo is reasonably correct.

I am also in the process of fitting a K1200 5 spoke to the front  and now just need to get a tyre  to finish this.

The K1200 uses a 20mm wheel spindle and our K's use a 25mm spindle so bearings etc. need to be changed

Don't forget the K100 16V is fitted with a paralever, I did try the K1200 wheels in my 8v but no success.

As discussed earlier in the post, lots of modifications are required to fit wider wheels to an 8v bike but in can be done.

I saw an early K100 with a K1200 rear wheel when camping last weekend. I was told the only mod was to fit two of the steel spacers. It's a well used bike so it obviously works.

There wasn't much clearance between the swing arm and tyre, but no evidence of the tyre making contact.
Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of the tyre size.
