On my way home from work I noticed a petrol smell. It was coming from my bike.

I can't find a leak....I'm not loosing and petrol.

I stopped and checked the fuel and return pipes..all fine.

No smell from either side if the engine.

But a smell from the fuel cap....this is a new thing today.

Any ideas.

Mike

Hi there, my guess is that your tank vent. primary system is clogged and the tank´s cap safety valve is releasing the overpressure and letting you know.
Best regards
JAP

Hope JAP is correct in his diagnosis but I've been here twice on two different K's. An 89 LT and my current 84 RT.
The leaks were tiny and with the insulation on the base of the tank and the rubber pieces in around the fairing, actual leaks are hard to spot in the early stages.
If the cap is ok, take out the fairing pockets and trim and inspect the tank along the bottom seam for bubbles in the paint and check the base for dampness.

Are there any vents other than the overfill one at the cap.

Not sure if I should use the bike now.  The only place I could smell fuel was around the cap.

Depends on how bad it smells. If it's just the faintest whiff now and again, I wouldn't worry too much. Probably is the cap.
If it makes your eyes water, it needs looking into sooner rather than later.
When the tank on the LT started it wasn't too bad. Picked at a paint blister along the bottom edge and it turned into a 2mm hole. Was glad I was at home at the time.

It's just a slight wiff but not all the time.

Today has been a warm day here..20c..and it's the first time I have used the K in warm weather.

Also the tank is almost empty as well...only started when it got low.

So I will fill up tomorrow and see what happens.

Mike

Wen the tank is full, you have a small gas chamber and more fuel mass to heat, so the temperature may not raise enough to reach the relieve valve set point.
There is also much less gas to vent and smell.

So is a bit of a smell normal with high heat and an empty tank or are my caps seals on the way out.

I don't think the smell is normal, your cap seal can be at fault, but first I would check the vapor vent system.
Best regards
JAP

The vapor vent system is one of the two hoses that come from the bottom back of the tank, correct?

That's right.
