Hey Halo, why don't you just take the fuel cap into the locksmith, and have a new key cut.

Dont take the glovebox lids in. They only use 4 of the 5 tumblers.  Don't ask how I know that piece of trivia.

Did you record the number on the key? You know that when we were at Bingara that Blakey and I could start just over half the bikes there with our keys. If in real bind, try someone elses key.

Good point Halo, you'll have to take the ignition switch to the locksmith.

It may be easier to take the seat lock if it's the same and unlocked.

First phone around and ask if they cut steel blanks.  Many key smiths don't.

I got one set of keys with the RT, plus a spare blank. No one will cut the spare for me. But the key for the LT works in the RT.......RT keys works the ignition and storage boxes, but not the petrol tank which has a different key. On the LT the key works the ignition and petrol tank but not the storage boxes.

I would love to have all on the one key but I suspect that means getting a complete set off one bike [ignition, petrol tank, storage boxes, seat lock].

I dont know whether it would work for a 30 YO K or not, but when we had our housefire we replaced the keys for Maries F650GS and R1150R by ordering from the BMW dealer using the VIN for each bike.

Those records might not exist for the K though.

Have a locksmith coming onsite monday, says for two sets of keys $220 and abit of hard work.
"Local locksmith says he will make two keys for $60 if I drop the ignition switch off."

FYI:  The lock cores for the gas cap, seat lock, system cases and top case (both 22 and 35L) can all be "rekeyed" to work with the ignition key - at home, by you, for free.  All of the locks are slightly different but modifying the lock cores once you get them out is the same.

Duck is there a link to how to fix the locks?  And will it work on side cover locks? The covers over the "radio" location.

Good work.

Now the sensible thing to do is take two of those keys off the ring and hide them in a safe place.

Or give them to Helen

Got that done about 15 yrs ago for a GSX250 the old man literally sold me for my birthday present. He sold it to me for what he paid for it - that was the gift part...

Anyways, it had no keys so the first thing I ever learnt about the GSX250 was how to hot wire it. I was amazed at how easy it was once you knew how.

Always made it easy to get away if I was being punished by having my keys confiscated. He seemed to constantly forget that he had taught me how to start the thing without the keys! And within two shakes of a lambs tail I was off!
(I was a shit of a kid)

That bike also taught me how to get around (for weeks mind you) with a broken clutch cable....

Back then I recall all we did was take the ignition barrel to the locksmith and he got a number off the barrel and was able to produce a key just from that. But maybe my 16 yr old brain missed alot else that happened and it was more complicated then this....anyways, cost $50 back then - so good to know its still pretty cheap to get done.
