Im really unsure about my gearbox bearings. Ive got it stripped down and ready to go back together, Im just unsure of the state of the bearings, as Ive not got much experience in judging such things. (NB: Incase your wondering....I opened it to replace all the seals, and also because im a curious s.o.b)

While im this deep in the box, and also considering its a 220,000km bike, should I just replace the bearings anyway?

I have another intact gearbox here of slightly newer vintage, perhaps ill open it and compare its bearings with these ones, for reference....

In Aus, is it cheaper to buy the suitable bearings from a local bearing shop, or is the Bins still the cheapest option?

If I just dropped the shafts and new bearings off at a bike mechanic would they be willing to do the swap for me? How many hours labour do ya reckon that would be? Only 1 I would hope.;..?

Or anyone wanna lend me a bearing splitter/puller/whatever other special bits are needed?

They are very common sizes and should cost no more than $70 including the seals even buying a high quality brand like SKF or Timken.

The whole six. One of the tapered roller bearings is the same as a front wheel bearing for a holden

When you get the ball races they will have a rubber seal on both sides just put a sharp screwdriver and get rid of the seals (they come very easily). You can get the shielded bearing with a steel shield on both sides but they are heaps more and not really needed.

3/4 inch and 5/8 inch
One more thing is when you remove the cover make sure not to mix the shims, They will probably be stuck to the inside of the cover with thick gooey oil. Keep an eye for them often you don't pick up they are there till washing is complete and they are in the tub and don't ask.

Already made that mistake and mixed the shims up.....

Just went to the bearing shop and they were mighty pissed off that I didn't have a specific number for each bearing, only the measurements (they seem to be continually amazed that the general public are oblivious to the nuances of the bearing world)

One bearing in particular, he reckons does not exist, based on the specs I got from a micro fiche (45.24 X 16.64 X 22)

Bearing in question is the closest to the splines on the input shaft.

Anyone have these mythical numbers?
