I have a Kappa 46ltr top box to fit to my K100LT and need some advice on the rack.

I know i will need something new as the existing one is sloping.

I've seen a rack that replaces the existing one but is lifted up to make it flat.

I've also seen a complete new rack and arms that is mounted on the frame by the seat.

So which option do i choose and does the first one have a weight limit due to it being sat driectly onto the tail thingy.

Mike

Don't use the one that mounts onto the tail section unless you have serious reinforcing inside the tail.

Thats what i thought.  it's a big box so will have some weight in it eventually.

Any ideas of where to get a rack?

Mike

Funny you should ask that Mike. I bought one off ebay UK but the seller is now asking for an extra 30 quid postage to Oz. I'll let you know when he settles the refund with me and give you the details of the new add for it.

Here's the add I clicked on -> http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261410566859?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Those K1100LT racks will crack/break if you overweight them.

Searching for reynolds rack brings up strippers online Smile

I'm guessing they have shut up shop?

Kappa have their own mounting racks, one of them could be modified to resemble our 1100 racks and then you would have a sound mount

Long gone.

I have a rusty one that needs a paint job but shipping to Oz would probably be obscene. Better to spend your money on strippers.

I have the one that fits onto the tail section with a large Givi box on it. Never had any strength problems but I try to only put light stuff into the box. It has survived a run of 140+ mph up he autoroute with no problems.

The bottom part of the Givi E181 is made to fit the factory mounting holes in a K tail cowl. It has a flat mounting surface good for generic aftermarket top cases. I ran a Givi 36 on one on my K75RT for oodles of miles.  I've often seen warnings about the tail cowl cracking but have never heard of it happening.

The best part of having a level tail rack is that you have somewhere to put your beer when working on your bike.

The wife's K75 had a 45lt Givi and it busted the tail section up, pulled the 2 front bolts right out with heaps of broken fibreglass as well.

When I bought my '94 75RT it came with the usual krap conversion from single to dual seat.  It was a pre-86 seat and a non-oem duck tail made of fibreglass.  As it was about as thick as two pieces of paper and fitted with a Givi top box, I was surprised it didn't fall off on the trip from Sydney to Brisbane.

Later I checked the quality of the duck tail against an oem item and mine was definitely after market garbage.  So the top box was removed along with the duck tail that had fracturing around the four mounting bolt holes.  It now has an oem duck tail sourced from a forum member in the US.

The seat found a home with Mr Klompy and the Givi top box is gathering dust.  So if any of the SEQ members would like to take home a Givi top box (45l?), complete with tail light wiring and keys, it can be found here in exchange for a six pack of Tooheys Old.

Mr T

Top box help E180My LT came with a Hepco & Becker top box on a chrome carrier on one of the carriers on the left of this photo. Its painted steel. I took it of and put it on the RT. It fits in the same holes as the sloping one. Mine was a bit tired so I stripped it and painted it but its rusting so going to get it powdercoated. I never had a problem with the weight, but make sure to use large washers to spread the load and make sure all is screwed up tight.
