Hi there,
some people call me Mick or Irish as I used to call Castlebar,Westport and Ballinrobe my stomping grounds eons ago. I'm 56 now and started riding sidecars at the age of 14 which was barely legal. Apart from that beefed-up solo Buellster in my shed there is a 2003 model Road King/1973 Squire in the shed which both are my only means of transport. By the way - the shed is in Hannover, Germany. There is two grease-monkeys in the team, my beloved wife Anita Caroline (34) and our cute wee one Liane Siobhán (5).
If there is anything else about my humble self you're eager to ask - don't hesitate.
Have a nice one,
Mick

Hi Mick and welcome too.....

I love Castlebar and Wetport too, some great ride outs there. I suppose you frequented the Beaten Path too....

Now all you need is a K to complete your life!!

If you are back at any time let us know...and if we are in Hannover, well......

Thank you ever so much for your warm welcome. Whenever you're near my place, you know... I actually used to ride one or two Ks when with the police force but can't get rid of the habit riding Harley-Dees - since 1976 that is - even though I owned a few flat twinned Beemers myself and with a friend once put a chair to a K.

So long,
Mick

Welcome. I am about the same age as you and spent my teenage years not far from Hannover, Nienburg Weser to be exact. I used to bomb about the area on my brand new R75/7 at the age of 18.

Of course the world is smaller on a bike. We don't have tunnel vision and blinkers!.

A new R75/7 was a nice thing, I remember them but they were heavily taxed here and the exchange rate was poor. I remember the R75 being twice the price of a Honda CB750 and the R90S being twice the price of a Z1.....

We have a great variety of members, all in all makes the forum very interesting and an opportunity to occasionally meet up.

Here is an event on here at the end of May.........from Rosslare port take N11/M11/M50/M1/A2 and its no more than about 3 1/2 hours........could be fun and a very interesting area!! Would be lovely to get a few Ks to it. I will put up a bottle of Jameson 12 year old for the furthest travelled K from the forum! Ferry options from France [ www.irishferries.com  or www.ldlines.ie or via UK www.irishferries.com or www.stenaline.ie . Now, how many Ks could we get?

I'd still be getting there on my HD-combo - if I could make it this year. Originally we planned to spend our summer holidays in Ireland this year, but this would have put us back about three grand - € that is - for the three of us for a fortnights, incl. flight plus B&B. I can't take the little girl and the wife across in the chair. Being short on the pennies we will be visiting Kent instead. An aquaintance of mine owns a Victorian pub and one of his friends got a 17th century farm house, where he does B&B. I can make you asure that my preferences are with Ireland, but... Probably next year?

Cheers anyway,
Mick

Ever wondered why I'm at this forum? Originally I intended to get in touch with the Irish Sidecar Owners Club, but I got linked to your site. A minor mistake which led me to the conclusion that it was right and that you're a great bunch of motorcyclists.

Great stuff,
Mick

Have a look at this camp site. Its very bike friendly and made for you guys. Bjorn, 88KE and myself have stayed there camping and can vouch for it and there is some fabulous stuff and rides around, perfect for the three of you.

They have some lovely mobile homes there [€700 for 2 weeks peak season] and very reasonable, meaning you only need what you can pack in the combo!!!. I am sure you would love it, its a great spot for kids, animals, everything. I think we could arrange a little K company too. Its also a working farm so bringing the 'tractor' would be spot on.!!!

Its a half hour from Waterford, about 90 mins from the Rosslare ferryport. If you use the Cherbourg Dublin route is motorway virtually from the port to within 4 miles of the camp site, also about 90 minutes from Dublin. Unfortunately a ferry search gave me €685 for ferry and cabins...saucy. Other option is to go Landbridge through the UK.....we know from experience it tends to be cheaper and from where you are the drive is probably fairly similar.

http://www.norevalleypark.com/

Of course another option is you take the bike and let the others fly to Dublin [preferably] or Shannon or even Cork....the route to Clonmel has some lovely curves in it......

Thank you ever so much,
my wee one just came in and watched the link with me. She was quite impressed - but all's booked for this year, I'm afraid so. As I already said: thre'll be another year coming, that's for sure. The Mayas were just misinterpreted.

Park up the idea as it will keep. Due to my own work arrangements being erratic, I work on an assignment basis now so its hard to plan far in advance and I tend to take time out between assignments.

But this place is truly lovely and a leisurely trip across to Cherbourg or Roscoff via an overnight B&B near and taking in Mont St Michel which you can do on the day of catching a ferry from Roscoff [Brittany Ferries] Friday night to Cork is best for this. If she has never seen it its the stuff of dreams for a wee one. Hogwarths Castle....

The other option I can very confidently recommend is the west and south west of France for camping.....Have a look at Noirmutier west of Nantes....the roads are lovely, its flat, curvy and lovely.

Welcome Mick, as you have found out this is a super friendly place with only an interest in things K required.

I suppose you have seen the sidecar thread here? And the ride reports? I love the stories and photos

of places I otherwise wouldn't get to see. The Irish lads in particular have been very proactive in actually

meeting up, a bit unusual for an internet group. I'm working on how I can claim that bottle of Jameson...

Amazing what a 12 year old Jameson can do without even opening it! Its a great reflection on those in the forum that people do get to meet and share some stories. I must add the forum was here long before me!

I think too that K riders might need a Jameson on the Saturday evening BBQ. Depending on weather it makes excellent hot whiskey or Irish Coffee or can be enjoyed neat.

Anyone looking at taking over 1,000 miles to make it?

Its a long way from the original post but. . .

K Bike,

Quite a funny event this morning....I have a drawer in my bedroom in which I keep man things like cuff links, black tie, watches, phone charger, keys etc. For some reason I had to root in it the morning and there was a rumble at the back of it. Buried at the back of the drawer and quite forgotten was a bottle of Jameson. Now the thing is it needs using. It goes off very quick once its open, for some strange reason. A nice reminder.

That offer still stands but I may need to make a grammatical correction and say a Jameson bottle rather than a bottle of Jameson..

88KE and myself are planning a trip anyway and settled on 13-20th May. Now I wonder would Mick make it across to south west France.......

We should have a forum K day some time in the year when we find a matching hour and simultaneously have a wee dram..........

Thank you all very much for the reminder. There's in fact a couple of bottles of Jameson's in my cupboard  - a Jameson bottle of Gold Reserve and a Jameson bottle of Signature Reserve. Furthermore the is a bottle of Tyrconnell as well as a bottle of Clontarf, both not even opened. The Inishoven stuff will remain closed for the next 12 years plus one day (hmmm? 03MAR2026), the day when my wee one will have it with myself for her 18th birthday. Not to forget there is still a couple of jugs filled with Tullamore Dew.

It think I know what to do later on today, feed the fireplace a few logs and have a sip of Uisge Baugh myself.

Life wouldn't be the same without a bottle of Jameson's finest,
Mick

TacKler,

Definitely May.........

Lets hope we get that meet up to work-we are looking forward to it.

Unless you meet up with our friend Mick here and murder the Jameson to the point that a black hole appears in your diary. Interesting plan for his daughters 18th.

For our non Celtic friends the Irish or Gaelic for whiskey is Uisce Beatha or Uisge Baugh. The literal translation is 'water of life'. Very appropriate indeed.

Very Happy Hi Mick !
With some delay, but nevertheless: a very warm welcome to this magnificant forum !
See, what a tiny mistake brings you ? All kinds of good stuff (and I don't only mean the Jameson... mjam...)
Almost a shame that I'm already on a trip to France with good friends in about the same period, otherwise I surely would have tried to gain that price, 92KK ! Maybe another year, just keep that bottle stacked somewhere ?!  Razz

Cheers and: have a good one, everybody !

Welcome to the forum. We await your purchase of a Mighty K(?).

I still have my 1977 R75/7, bought new, and fondly recall it was the last of the 750s (the R80/7 replaced it next model year) and one of the first of the venerable /7 series. It has something like 800,000 total kms on the odometre - after two goings over, one an upgrade/refurbishment/restoration completed in 2004. This is what it looks like now.

@ TWB:

Sorry, but I've got enough rides for the rest of my life, I believe.

Thank you ever so much for the warm welcome,

My season starts on the first of January and ends the 31st of December - can't afford a car, though.

Have a nice season yourself,
Mick
