Look what followed me home! P8221613-sm_zpsoaw766vnLook what followed me home! P8221609%20sm_zps5zntxaid

Only 3 problems so far, in order of importance:

  1. Another Red F*#!ing Bike (to go with 4 other red ones)
  2. It wont start.
  3. Front brake calipers seized

So tomorrow is trying to identify the starting issue. Battery full charge, it turns over well.  My first thought is fuel supply because I cant smell anything at the pipe no matter how long i crank it.

It's not going to stay like that, that much I know.

The fairing is probably headed to the sidecar, and cut that screen down so I look over it instead of through it.

The bike then to be fitted with K1100 front end, gearbox and paralever, minimal bodywork, dual purpose tyres(likely Mitas E07), metal pannier loops and soft panniers..

But first I need to get it running.

Cameras lie Charlie.  I took the shot from its best side.

Its a pretty tired RT, but its what I need.  The fairing isn't damaged so little repair work before painting for the sidecar (not red this time, but havent made my mind up yet).

The RT itself? A dirt runner.

Seats don't matter to me, easy fixed.  But its not that bad, what looks like a big tear is actually reflection from the garage lighting.  The paint is pretty crap but that doesn't matter as there's going to a lot of cutting to make the fairing fit the sidecar bike anyway.  Once it fits, then I'll get the lot painted. All the bits are there though.  It came with a Koni back shock which appears to be in much better condition than the Koni on the sidecar.  I'll have a better idea once I ride it.  Doesn't matter for this bike as its getting an 1100 gearbox and rear end fitted anyway with the longer back shock.  No idea what the pinion spline/driveshaft are like but they'll be kept as spares for the sidecar.

Finally I have a bike with a correctly working gear indicator!

Thanks for the offer.  I've been living without it for so long with the other 2 bikes that its not really an issue.  The 16 i could probably fix if i wanted to, the sidecar its a huge job because i cant get the swingarm out with first removing the sidecar and the subframe.

So during the week I got it started. Just bad fuel really.

Friday (my day off to de-stress and relax (how better than working on a K)

  • Check valve clearances(8 shims changed)
  • Warm it up and do a basic throttle body synch.
  • Replace battery
  • Take it for a very short test ride (almost no front brakes still)
  • Marked and cut down very high aftermarket smoke windscreen so that I can see over it easily, it lost about 4"

Saturday

  • Found some spare twin pot calipers, still can't get a front brake
  • Dug out the original master cyl from the RS sidecar (now running 16v brakes)
  • With that M/C fitted I can now bleed the brakes and get a nice firm lever
  • Test ride, much nicer but it badly needs new steering head bearings, very notchy.
  • Fitted the 1100 3 spoke rear wheel, the RT tyre is almost bald, the 1100LT tyre is almost new except for burnouts done by the salvage yard guys Sad
  • 110/80-18 Lastertec (almost new) from the 1100LT front wheel fitted the RT front wheel.
  • I was going to go shopping for some new fork oil but after riding it, its nicely firm with much less dive than I remember from an 8V RT, I suspect it must have some decent springs in it already (Koni rear shock too).
  • I've added it to my insurance policy.

Decision time; do I take the RS or the RT to the scrapheap?  They both qualify on purchase price.

I've decided against the RT fairing on the sidecar, It's good just the way it is.

I think now the RT will do duty as an RT in the cooler months and naked during the summer.
So the modifications continue...

Look what followed me home! RT-morph_zpsax5gpuia

Look what followed me home! DSC_0275_zpsxrpb2oco
Done:
1) Paralever gearbox/rear suspension.  - Already fitted
2) 1100 front end  Fitted in the last week, LT mudguard cut down and painted satin black
3) K1100RS handlebars and barbacks fitted
4) GS type mirrors came from Spain (ebay)
5) cheap headlight and brackets to suit
6) Brake hose to link M/C to the K1100 fork bridge custom made today (a whopping $59.40)

Coming
7) Paint the spare rear cowl satin black
Cool A horn and blinkers
9) Do something with the spare standard seat, shape and recover, maybe even red to match the tank

Then I can take my time with the RT bodywork and have it ready to go back on when needed for the cooler months next year.  A bike with a split personality!

That's about the ballpark over here (translated to GBP), whether it's Goodrich, Venhill, Hels or Earlshose. I've been making my own brakelines for years but the price difference between buying and making is pretty small. The convenience factor is damn high though. I did get really lucky recently and snaffled 10 metres of black Hels hose for £25; the guy was selling off bankrupt stock. If he's any left next month I'm going after some more...Very Happy  Now, if someone would just start selling bankrupt stock hose fittings I'd be a really happy bunny!!

This weekend the spare motor is going in to ensure reliability, I've no idea how long the rattling main bearings will last but they are getting worse.

So I've spent some time cleaning and preparing the 'other' engine. Have some bits on order, but nothing has arrived yet; doesnt matter at this stage.

I've always liked the look of the later 'black' motors, so the cases got removed, cleaned thoroughly, painted and masked/filed/sanded, also soaked all the grotty bolts in kero and gave them a scrub with ultrafine synthetic steel wool (a fine scourer).

Look what followed me home! Right_zps8fmhzzoq

Look what followed me home! Front_zpsryt87gau

Look what followed me home! Left_zpsqsujiosl

When the new cam cover gaskets arrive, I'll remove and finish the fins on this cover.

The paint is a lightly textured Hammerite Satin Black.

Fingers crossed, its all disassembled, reassembled and running tomorrow.  No reason why it can't be really.

A glitch with the throttle cable and having to pack up early for a social engagement meant she didnt get mobile again, another 2 hours this morning will see it complete and running.

All done for now, she starts and runs well, no rattles of any sort from the engine again.  To complete it properly it now needs a new K100RT throttle cable, 4 exhaust rings and a new oil sight glass. I have to fabricate a new exhaust mount again as I've fitted the Staintune to it and the K1100 footpeg plates arent a match.
