The're OK mate the cracks are only half way through you should get another 25 years from them. Just cover them in that red gorilla snot till it dribbles down the cover and they wont leak any significant amount of oil.

Ya, mine look the same. I checked-out the procedure for changing the valve cover gasket and decided that discretion being the better part of valor I'd let my mechanic do it when the time comes. :king:

just make sure you have the bolt rubbers ....AND replacement cover gasket ...BEFORE you start ..they aren't expensive at all  and by replacing ....will last another 20

Yes, you should. These grommets keep the pressure on the seals, as the bolts bottom out. There is very little, if any pressure from the bolts on the cover seals, its all coming from the 'bolt-grommets'. They're not expensive and if you warm them up and use a bit of grease easily replaceable. The old ones will be difficult to replace (I cut them all off last year) as the grommet is hardened out.

FYI: I just posted that pic for entertainment purposes because those are the worst of those I've ever seen. 

I'm installing all new grommets and gaskets on both sides.

I cut the old ones off too.

my no1 plug wouldn't fit the socket it looks a bit offf centre, could be crossed or PO helicoiled a bit out?? no leaks, Mananged to do 2,3,4 plug replacement no prob, no1 puckeroooed perhaps, leaving it for now having a think, a slow one till i get back from the Burt Munro..

re valve tappet clearance, how often in kms approx, are the shimms hard to get? my odo says 28 000 kms so shes a little used bike or new speedo??
