Not sure what to title this to make it kind of obvious, but this is about a tracking app.

Glympse

Just loaded it up and seems pretty good for what it does.

Send a glympse to someone and they can track your location via google maps.
If you have their number, stick it in the send bar and the other person can see where you are and then follow your progress.

Thinking it would be fantastic for meeting up with people. No more 'how long till you get here' conversations as you can see where they are. Gives speed also.

Should be quite entertaining too...watching the little arrow as you guys go too far...take a wrong turn, head back to Tumut, go via Kiandra...Hours of fun!

Actually I would suggest it does not work where the is no phone coverage.
I wonder if it stores that info till you get back in range of a network?

If it has no phone network then it don't know where it is to store it.

Does it tell people how fast you are going ?

The option is there to turn it off.

A word of warning from someone who used to have a business supplying vehicle tracking.
I'm assuming that the app uses mobile data and the cost of data can make a big difference when roaming in a different country.
This was a big problem for me controlling costs with vehicles travelling between Northern and Southern Ireland.
You wouldn't want a surprise mobile bill after your European tour and trying to make your mates jealous by letting them see where you are.

If you travel overseas always turn off your roaming data unless it is a company phone

Here is the blurb from the web site.

The Glympse app does require a data connection in order to report your location to anyone you've chosen to share it with. This data most likely does count towards the monthly data plan you have with your carrier.

We are sensitive to the limitations of mobile devices and of mobile data costs, so we have engineered Glympse so that it uses a minimum amount of data and battery. On average, it is 300 Kilobytes of data per hour but that depends on the number of people that you are sharing the Glympse with, the amount of tapping that you do on a map tile, type of connection etc. So, even if your Glympse was not being updated because you were not uploading anything, data would still be used in downloading the map tiles.

That's not a lot of data.
However, with my mobile network, Vodafone, as soon as it uses any data when roaming, a minimum charge for each day applies. Think its £5 a day.
So, two weeks 'sur le continent' could cost me £70 for data.
That's why my phone is set to not use data when out of the UK. I can be out of the UK in 25 miles.

I had a glympse of Klompy last evening. His RS RS was doing 0 mph. I suggested he update to an RT.

So this is what that random text message was all about last night. I was not so curious as to take a look as what Klompy was wanting me to Glympse :-)

One can't be too careful with these city folk these days........Insert silly alien face and add a couple of military and sms jokes.

I hate it when you go to one of those large shopping centres and look at their map of the complex. There is a red dot and arrow stating, "you are here". Bloody governmet.....they know where you are all the time.

It's the chip they insert in your shoulder then they track every move.

You don't know what you are missing...only yesterday I watched Rossco catch the bus home at a huge 21 MPH top speed...riveting viewing it was...I always thought he rode to and from...it was a very wet slippy day its true.

just an update.
Andy bought a new bike. 1000km from home.
He loaded Glympse and has sent me 2 so far.

Twice I have called him on his journey home as I saw he was stopped.
Both times he had stopped for a break.

I know he appreciated the calls and he is now on the final stretch to home and he knows someone is following him.

Not sure it gets a lot better than that for someone alone on the road to know that there is someone following the trip and able to make contact or provide the whereabouts if help was required.

Now I am not sure how Glympse gets it data or sends it, but an interesting project might be to send the message to someone in another country and see what happens.
would it be intenational data transfer or would it go through the Glympse servers and just count as local data????


Happy to try it if someone in a foreign land is also keen

Seems you can copy the address sent in the sms from the Glympse ap and stick it in the computer.

You have to send someone an invitation to view your travels and well I may have posted this for the world to see without Andy's permission and let's hope the police are not looking, but as a tool for helping to keep a rider safe on a long journey, you must admit it is pretty good.

Don't speed Andy and friends.

I ran this for 3hours last week end so the boss could see me heading home from down south. My phone was at 98% battery after 4 hours riding to get there and it was at 52% when I got home 3hours later. Just be aware that live GPS updates will drain your battery quick.

Roskko put me onto this GLYMPSE App, and its great!..............

Rode up to Parkes in NSW (700klm) to meet a mate coming down from Brisbane (1000klm) for a weekend at the Moto GP.
Got him to load it onto his phone as well, so at any stage we could see where eachother was. He was on an R1, and his girlfriend was tracking him while she was at work, so just as well he had the speed turned off, we got some pretty high figures out in the plains country. But its free and accurate as.

A useful app, and you dont need to phone or message when you stop to see where people are. YOU choose who of your contacts can see it.

Oh Roskko, GP was great, survived camping in the Trackside campground though not a lot of sleep was had. Moorons who like to start their bike up cold and go straight to the rev limiter........mechanics dream! Lots of fireworks, but in general a good crew around us, met some nice blokes who had travelled down from as far as Townsville! Ended up doing just shy of 2500klm in 4 days of riding. A most enjoyable break!
