Per the topic, when I let off the throttle at any speed there's a rattling or clatter coming from somewhere around my right foot peg. It also makes a more hammering sound at higher torque situations like leaving a stop sign or climbing a hill in too high a gear. This noise is present even when the bike is cold but does seem to get slightly louder as the bike warms up.

I'm an experienced technician so please feel free to answer in whatever technical terms you need to explain your diagnosis.

that's the rubber insulators between the altenator and the drive gear
just behind - inside the right foot

Thanks Charlie!

I just did the same google search I've been doing but added "alternator" and BOOM! Apparently it's the most common complaint in the K series.

you risk braking the bell housing that connects to the altenator ...but more importantly the drive mechanism , its shaft and sprag clutch (used in starting ) along the same auxiliary shaft

doesn't take long to do ..but could save a major pull down to do the other repair

any idea what the problem area was? My 86 K100rs has very similar symptoms

I was going to say uni joint too.  They can clatter a bit on high torque loads before failing completely.  Had it happen myself.

Thanks. As I am going to dissemble the drive train, when signs should I look for when inspecting the drive shaft uni-joint?

Mine was obvious as it failed completely.  I'd be checking for any play in the universal joint.
