My bike has been running well and it's been fun to ride.

I recently took a look at the digital clock and cleaned the contacts but that is not working, which I can live with. I bought a little digital clock and have velcroed it to my dash just behind the wondscreen...

But the speedo has stopped working.

Tapping it while riding is having no effect.

I have cleaned contacts in the instrument, the sensor at rear wheel, the connector between sensor and loom... I stuck a spare cluster on the bike and that showed the same symptoms. Tacho OK but speedo not. The return spring on the speedo is bringing the needle back to zero.

When I opened the cluster to look at the digital clock I may have affected something...

How should I proceed from here?

You said that you put a spare cluster on and had the same result, tach ok but no speedo. Perhaps I misread but that would suggest that the problem lies between the rear wheel and the cluster, but not in the necessarily the cluster. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the sensor on the rear final drive. I was advised when I had the problem to try the cheapest fix first. The cheapest fix was to replace the sensor (CDN $25). Just a thought.

Before buying a replacement sensor, remove it from the Final Drive, put the bike in gear and using a thin screwdriver (or similar) see if the impulse sender has come adrift - it shouldn't move if the bike is in gear.

They can come loose and if they do no signal is sent. You may need a torch to see the square teeth down through the sensor hole.

Also a quick check is to remove the sensor from the drive and hols a mains powered soldering iron very close to the sensor and the magnetic field from the 50 or 60Hz of the power supply will make the needle go to 61kph (36mph) if the key is on. That is at 50Hz and 60Hz will read 20% higher.

I did a few repairs to the speedo pins in the instrument cluster ...quite a few killometers ago now ... hasn't missed a beat since *(well over 10,000 klm )

I wish I had been a member of this forum when I had my speedo problem. As it turned out for me, the sensor wire that runs along the swingarm had come out of the clip and rubbed on the tire. I only discovered this when I removed the sensor to replace it.

The advice of Rick and Mike should be incorporated into a speedo troubleshooting document. Great stuff

So, I checked the impulse sender with the bike in gear and couldn't detect any movement.

I checked the wiring from the connector by the rear brake reservoir to the 24 pin connector (female) that the cluster fits onto - continuity all good.

I checked the circuits in the cluster itself and all was OK. 

I cleaned the pins after removing the speedo unit from the rest of the cluster internals.

I was hopeful...but still no speedo when I tested earlier.

I will remove again and see if I missed something or can improve the connections in the cluster.
I haven't done the soldering iron test on the sensor as I have no power at my garage which is not right by my house...

Any other thoughts anyone?

Hmm........pin 24 is instrument illumination...........22 and 23 is the speedo sensor.

To check the sensor...set your instrument to the lowest DC reading, connect the
probes to the connector under the RHS battery cover (or pin 22 & 23) and turn the
back wheel.....watch the instrument......much easier if a analogue instrument is used.

Hi! You were right after all. I checked the bike again today and with the engine running and in 1st gear I found that the impulse sender was slipping ie it could be kept still while the rear wheel was turning at low revs. This is the fault you predicted isn't it!
So my question is, can it be fixed? How? Have you done this yourself?
