Under the tank, there is a fuel pump/ low fuel light connection. When I was taking the tank off I noticed one of 4 wires broken.. 1/4 inch from the connector. I wanted to fix it but all the wires, from age or oil/fuel contamination were very stiff non flexible and I did not want to break any others since the bike runs and the fuel pump works. I'm assuming that the broken wire goes to the low fuel light. The red triangle dash light stays on. I would cut the wires farther back and reconnect them to the little round plug that connects to the "fuel pump/ low fuel light" sender unit but not sure if that is possible. Or if it is possible to get a new connector. Any Ideas?
Thank you,
Alan

The connector for the factory alarm (in the relay box) is identical.

Is the connector at the front left of the fuel tank?  I have an 84RT and its at the front left, on the 92LT its at the rear right.

At a guess you could remake it but my own thought is to get a good connector off another bike and make a junction on them far enough back to give you plenty of spare length but also so the connector is located in the dry under the fuel tank. That way you preserve the colour coding. I don't know the wiring well enough to know if its possible to trace them all the way to the other ends but I imagine they are all wrapped into the loom.

Where is the Relay Box located? The connector is at the left front side of the tank.
Thanks.

If it is the fuel tank connector located on the right side of the bike midway down the frame, then common practice is to replace that connector rather than repair it.  Many people use a commonly available 4-pin trailer connector pair.  I'd look into using AMP SureSeal connectors readily available on Ebay.  They are waterproof and easy to connect/disconnect.

Your description was unclear to me because I also read that possibly the breakage is 1/4" away from the tank, near the plate that  supports the fuel level sender.  Is that correct?

The red triangle is for the bulb monitoring unit, and not the low fuel indication.  Low fuel is indicated in a red rectangle with a gas pump symbol just below the speedometer.  If the red triangle stays on, then you have a burnt out bulb or a wiring error somewhere in the brake light system.

Under the rear of the tank.  Black plastic box with fuses on the left side of it.

Alan,
The relay box is located under the back of the fuel tank. You need to lift the back of the tank to remove the cover.
Assuming you do not have the factory alarm fitted, you'll find the 4 pin connector on a tail from the loom.

Paul.

What is the difference if the red triangle light stays on vs repeatedly goes on and off. When I rode it today it  did both at different starts. All the lighting works, I did add 3x10 inch array of leds connected at the stop bulb. bulb works also. If that is making the triangle light how do I turn it off?

The red triangle will flash when you first turn the ignition on and will flash till both the front and rear brake levers are operated and the switches turn the brake light on then it should stop flashing as it has tested and found the circuits to be OK. If it keeps flashing then there is a fault with either the front or rear brake light circuits.
The triangle light will come on and stay on if either the stop or tail light bulb aren't working but that is just the bulbs not the rest of the circuit.
This is what should happen if all is working as it should.
The 2 low fuel lights are in the speedo and one is marked with a 7 and the other with a 4 representing 7 and 4 litres left to empty and pushing it to the next gas pump.
The four wires that come from under the tank are ground - brown, fuel pump - green and then green/white after the plug, 7 litre warning light - yellow and 4 litre warning light - white.
The relay box is located under the fuel tank and you need to lift the rear of the tank and unclip the flat black plastic lid.
The LEDs should not cause any problems. They are very low current and the bulb monitoring Unit would not even know they are there.

Please put the year and model and VIN or engine number in the signature line so as to help us know which model you have. Go to PROFILE on the menu and you can do it there.

Rick,
Wasn't the early K's using a sensor that detected 7L and 4L volumes whereas later K's had a variable resistor to detect levels and a switched circuit to indicate low fuel.

I think the 4L bulb was removed in the later instrument panels, leaving the 7L light to indicate low fuel.

The early K wiring is brown/white = 4L, brown/black = 7L, green/black = fuel pump +12V and brown = ground
The later K wiring is white = low fuel, green = fuel pump +12V, brown = ground and green/white = variable fuel level

I hope this is correct information.

I was going by the circuit diagrams in the Haynes manual. S now I don't know who is right and wrong but there is a lot of confusion regards this issue and we need to sort it out.
Poor Alan is probably scratching his head thinking what is going on here and who do I believe.

If I am wrong then all very well I will correct the my diagrams,  and even send Haynes a Email to say what the heck.
Is there someone with an early K that can look and tell us what colours are actually there.

My 84 RT has the connecter at the front left of the tank and has the 7l orange and 4 l red low fuel lights.

The 92 Lt has the connections the rear right of gas tank and only has a red 5l warning. I am not sure when the change came in, was it to make way for ABS warning?

Anyway that connector at front left also left me down one day and is temporarily cured by having opened the pins slightly to make a better interference fit and electrical connection.

The change came in 1985 and ABS not till 1988. From what I gather the early system was very unreliable.

thanks for the information. The triangle light stays on and all the bulbs work fine. The low fuel light broken wire I think I'll ignore and keep the tank full! One of the POs must have done a lot of guessing electrical work on this bike.

I use a digital gauge where you stick your longest digit into the tank and if it comes out with fuel on it there is enough for 150 more kms:D
