Hey guys, I have just stumbled onto this forum of yours and am trawling through the info. Very nice. I have a K100 RT the full touring thing.

Is it true that these have Peugeot engines in them. To quote wikipedia

The need for a quick development time scale of a clean burning four-cylinder engine and the fact that Honda had developed a flat-four boxer for the GL1000 Gold Wing,[2] guided the design team led by Josef Fritzenwenger and Stefan Pachernegg to an existing liquid-cooled Peugeot car engine.

ANyway, hope you love questions. I got a ton of them.

It is not true that K bikes have Peugeot engines in them. It was used to test the idea but no more than that.

But it is true that the cylinder head and top end is used for converting certain Mini engines to twin cam 8 or 16 valve...

Shuts me up, I did wonder. Seems an odd move but sometimes when companies fail to plan, I remember I had a Vauxhall Omega with a BMW engines as GM forgot to design the diesel engine.

Love riding this bike, I have several others but this is the biggest at the moment. I had my daughter on the back and just dropped the bike at a junction.

Its a learning curve.

Can I ask are they all fuel injected.

All are fuel injected. The fuel systems and engines are quite reliable too. There are things to watch out for due to age, as in perishing hoses, pipes, electrical contacts and connections. These are worth checking out because once sorted you have quite a good bike.

I have the K100RT and find it much lighter than the LT. Both can be slightly difficult if you are under 5' 8" but there is a low seat option.

They take getting used to but I did find with a pillion it is most important pillion moves with bike and does nothing to alter the balance. Instruction is to hold on and stay with rider no matter what, as in lean with the rider at all times. I hope your daughter was ok and is going to go pillion again.

A lot of K bikes either fall over or get dropped over at junctions or at very low speeds. My LT went over 3 or 4 times and the RT once due to a car knocking it while parked.

The Pungent engine was only ever used as a concept bike design and had no real input to the design of the flat four engine. Word of this has only come through people who worked on the early design and apparently there aren't even any pictures of the original bike and BMW got rid of the machine which I think is a real shame now that 30 years on there are many people interested in the evolution of the K series.

Looks tidy. From Manchester UK 177912

Only question in my mind is what sort of body shape was someone who converted it to a low seat and needed a very tall screen? From Manchester UK 652573

LMAO, I had no idea, its a good question. Maybe they felt scared.

So its a low seat, good news cause I am a shorty anyway. 5ft 10 of pure blubber. Happy daze.

is it a very tall screen because it has that barn door look about it, would love a smaller one.

That is a nice K.....

My RT has the same tall screen but the regular RT seat. The LT has a 'comfort' seat which is quite high and I am 5' 8". at 5' 10" you would manage he comfort seat no problem but you would need the side panels to go with it. I thought of the low seat options but the comfort seat has that name for a good reason.

The tall screen has some advantages, like at 60mph it is 'self cleaning' but at low speed water or drizzle is not good, because I look through it rather than over it like on the LT. I reckon on cutting it down and fitting a deflector.

That seat wasn't available for your model year bike, hence it has the later rear seat surround with the pillion handles set in it rather than the seat itself. It was later offered as an option with the model update and many UK K75C models came with it from the factory.

Screens are a personal thing. Some like to look through, others, over. My personal favourite was the original RT screen with the deflector on the top edge. I don't think that it was generally very popular as BMW soon fitted the upright LT-type screen to all the RT/LT variants.

There's an early version on UK ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-K100-LT-Windshield-Screen-/231062431777?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item35cc64e821

They don't appear very often.

My very first K:

From Manchester UK K100RT%201988-X2

The raked screen somehow made it feel a bit more sporty.

Great to have you with us, having cleared up the Peugeot story here is another. Honda in developing the Gold Wing used a BMW frame and rear drive so as to be able to get the engine onto the test track quickly because they had decided to go shaft drive but did not have time to develop one until the prototype engine was proven.
Regards,
K-BIKE
