Hi all,

so about myself... I live in Liverpool and own an '88 K100LT. this bike was my dads way back when, then when i passed my test it was my fist 'proper' bike. I loved and adored my K but eventually the time came to sell it. everything was in place for the sale on wednesday, so on tuesday morning i awoke with horror to find it had been stolen ssj_Gill Intro 61740 !!!

Eventually the police recovered it but it wasn't exactly sale worthy any more. then a lightbulb popped up in the empty box i call my brain... this could be a project bike to play with Very Happy

so i'm turning my battle scarred tank into a revitalised cafe K, mainly because of inspiration from this forum. where am i up to? well something in the engine has exploded because the damn thing is seized and i can see metal fragments now that i've opened the engine. possible the crank bearings, some exploratory surgery to do me thinks.

also, i opened up the starter motor to clean it. however, i had to drill the long long screws out. only question is, where the heck can i find replacement screws of that length??? everywhere i go people look at me like i have 3 heads

anyway, enough from me. love the forum and looking forward to more

regards

Unusual for a K to be stolen as they are not a glamour bike especially in LT kit.

Its sad you had to come into it this way but in time you will find its a great forum and everyone will give all the advice on how to get it road bound again. One day, many years on, you will find that this happened to stop you selling the bike at all.

Now you have an opportunity to put your own stamp on it. It sounds like there is serious engine damage.

Starter motor you can get second hand from Motorworks if you want the whole thing. Or someone who has broken one might part with the screws.

With the engine if its bad how would you feel about an engine change? There are lots around and if there is a lot of damage it may be the way to go unless you really want to rebuild the engine. The engines go forever and a second hand one should be good. At the same time you can eliminate all potential problems like crankshaft seals, spline lubrication, clutch, gearbox seals, pipes and hoses etc.

If the plastic suffered badly its possible to put it all back, make it into a café racer, naked bike or rat bike even.

Don't be afraid to cross the water to some our meet ups too.... sooner or later we will be organising one to try and get some of you guys over. I see quite a few members up around north Wales, Chester, Manchester, Birmingham and more.

Welcome Gill.  I suggest you try a local auto electrical place - the guys who overhaul Alternaters starters etc. My local lad has a box of odd bits that yields a replacement every now and then for me.

Just a tip - Not all memebers bother reading the intro section so best to post a query like that in the relevant topic space...you'll get more answers.

Looking forward to you starting a threat on the cafe machine!

They're not overly expensive for genuine BMW you should be able to get them from your local dealer quoting part number 12411459499.
A quick search on the old www and you'll see they are only $1.87.... about £1.20 +vat each

Welcome aboard

Crickey that product code is exactly it. 2 mins on the phone and £2 later and its on its way to me Very Happy  good job

The bike being stolen was definitely a blessing in disguise, rather than selling it for a small sum i'm going to end up with a bad ass bike. i'll make sure to through up plenty of pics of the transformation

thanks for all the welcomes anyway, very friendly forum

Using the know how on this site and the various sources of used parts keeping a K running is not an expensive proposition no matter what the problem is. Garages and dealers tend to throw [your] money at a problem. All it takes is a little of your own time.
