I spent few hours today with friends planning a motorcycle trip to Europe next September.
Their plan is to ride in Italy, Bosnia & Hercegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia.
If members of these countries could give them tips and help them to plan their trip, I will appreciate.
Please reply to this post or contact me by PM.

Thanks,

CF

You should not put up enticing posts like that. Us irish Eccentrics might want to get in on this and make a September meet up. There are excellent ferries on east coast Italy aross to Croatia making for an excellent round trip. it is a trip of a lifetime. Maybe a few meet ups could work if an outline route is posted here!! Some of us are keen on a trip. 1600km road from my house to Rome!!

Hi Nino,

My brother goes to Croatia every September and October and I had planned to take the bike over last September and also do the Rome trip but it didn't work out.

I found a lot of ferries from Ancona and east Italy across to Split, Dubrovnik and places like that. I was keen to take a route from France to Milan to Florence to Rome to Pompeii then across to Ancona and a ferry to eventually end up in Split for while. Then up to Trieste and a route back to north west France. I known a few people who have done this and they recommended it.

I will watch with interest.

If you go to Pompei (Napoli) and planing a further trip to our side of Adriatic could be easier not to drive to Ancona ferry for Split. You can drive Napoli - Bari (400 km) take a ferry in Bari to Bar in Montenegro. From Bar you are 30 km from albanian border and 170 km from albanian capital Tirana. If you dont want to go Albania from Bar you can drive to Croatia: Dubrovnik 140 km, Split 360 km. In both cities ferry to Italy (?) or coastal road in direction of Trieste (Dubrovnik - Trieste 750 km) whic is very interesting to ride

My brother has done Trieste to Dubrovnik, but he has never learnt to drive or owned a car or motorbike. He spoke very highly of it and loves to stay in small local places or go camping. My own thought is to use that coast road up to Trieste. You have some really lovely places there!!

This world is too big for one lifetime but those countries I would go back to in a flash. Money problems (1974) dictated a 3 days transit of the former Yugoslavia, far too brief. I'll keep reading but you guys are givn' me grief here.

I think that you need a couple of French registered Beemers along on that trip. Not sure that the wife would keep up on her F800 though.

Not the size of the bike thats the problem, but her mind. She thinks that if she goes over 130kph then the tyres might explode!

Bikerboy,

I think you need a few Irish registered Ks to call by as well on the way and travel en masse. We wont be long convincing your wife that she misread it and that tyres explode from heat if they cant cool down properly.......Comberjohn will persuade her that the right hand clock should be at a nice safe steady 60mph and all will be fine. He can be very persuasive!!!

This thing is sprouting some wild ideas....You are perfectly placed for a stopover point.....

I have offered to help people out anytime. Either come down and pitch a tent on the airfield or in the garden, I have a garage full of tools and red wine! Or use the local hotel, which costs peanuts - ask CrazyFrog.
I am happy to act as a guide or just plan routes for bikers. All done from the goodness of my heart as I don't want a job. You can even send the wife/girlfriend on a flight to Bergarac airport and we will pick her up should she not want to sit on the back of the bike during the cooler part of the drive down - she has nothing to moan about that way :-)

Bert, I dont know about Adriatic Mototours, they are slovenian company, probably reliable. Anyhow, you can start by your own if it is cheaper. Here we have network of moto clubs in Croatia from Pula to Dubrovnik, in Bosnia&Hercegovina and Montenegro. We can help with any information about accomodation, roads, routes, food, drink, prices.

Hi

I worked in Kosovo for a year 2005 and visited - Montenegro and Dubrovnik often

If going from Italy go Bari to Bar (Montenegro) or Durres (Albania as then you will take in Kotor, & Budva (a must just as nice as Dubrovnik only smaller) also lovely coast roads. Not to Split as you miss the good bits further south.

Mostar is a small detour on way north

Further north the caves at Postojna (Italian Postumia ) are worth a detour - NO A MUST SEE

I did this whole trip in reverse in '67 in a mini when they first opened the coast road!

If weather forecast is good I am up for it  Very Happy  Very Happy

Those early Minis were fun. Getting stuck in reverse was common place. But they were great fun.

This whole thing has started a potentially very interesting thread. I wonder could we tempt a few more up from a land down under.......

I hope I can get away from work for it.....

Ah, Olaf.  Looking for an excuse to get away from work again?

Klompy may be available in April 2015.

Then there is his trusty sidekick RoscKo, the Nordic god of rain .......

For anyone specially interested in south of Croatia, Bosnia&Hercegovina, Montenegro and Albania starting point could be Dubrovnik airport. Friend of mine is owner of rent a bike with his agency. He rents a fleet of 10 new Yamaha 900 Midnight star.
From Dubrovnik distance to bosnian border is 10 km, Montenegro 35 km, Albania 170 km, roads and scenery very interesting.

Not so much an excuse to get away from work because I enjoy what I do, but its very intense and between contracts a decent trip is possible but I just never know exactly when I can do them.

We have some interesting Nordics up here....Bjorn! But when it comes to gods of rain no one beats Comberjohn; without fail every run he has produced excellent weather. I think he has a direct line in.

But April 2015 sounds good. Anyone travelling up from down under can get quickly to London or any main airport in Europe and we have no end of budget airlines all over Europe and excellent ferry services. The forum is great and chances to meet up are indeed very welcome.

Klompy would enjoy a run around Ireland.......not a marathon trip but a wonderful trail and plenty of stops and encounters along the way.

Alternative is also flying to Italy, then one can take a ferry leaving from Ancona or Bari to Zadar, Split or Dubrovnik on the Croatian coast. Italy offers good possibilities to rent the bike...

Alternatively, budget airlines Ryan Air and Easyjet fly to Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik airports in Croatia, German Wings from Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart and Berlin to Sarajevo, Wizz Air from Basel/Mulhouse to Tuzla and Mistral Air from several italian airports to Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

They can contact me for Sarajevo, and one of our local clubs has a good overview of routes on their web page (in English):

Also (God forbid), if they would need a good mechanic for BMWs in Split in Croatia...

From world's oldest and best motorcycle magazines' web page (German MOTORRAD, of course) - the list for Italy starts here:

Italian state TV RAI has an excellent programme - travelling with motorbikes around the world. Here are some of its episodes at YouTube, showing these countries:

And in the media archives of RAI one can find all episodes from the past years:
