Welcome to the forum.

Your mission, not impossible, should you choose to accept it, is to reassemble the K from those boxes back into a mile munching bike...

You will get all the help you need here.....so when you can post up some photos of the boxes of tricks. Guys here will help you with and missing bits, identifying parts and trouble shooting. Have a look at www.motorworks.co.uk and also www.motobins.co.uk, both are good sources of parts.

You have two weeks starting from now....!!!! I jest because you need physical help with some awkward tasks.

Is it an RS? A Ravensberger? Oh, sorry, they make jigsaws.

Actually the K is probably like a 250 piece jigsaw but it depends on how much you broke it up...

In truth its not so difficult. Make sure you have a Clymer Manual, go to eBay for one. And good tools. Newport has a few K riders not so far away and there are a few up in Birmingham who might be quite helpful....if you need a second pair of hands. Don't be afraid to post pictures or ask.

You should get some photos and put them up here. Then you need somewhere to set up the engine and also the frame.

Someone else did this quite recently so its not a new experience.

I took it to bits about 6 or 7 years ago I think. I have got mountains of bits, all brand new, even got a brand new, straight from BMW block and pistons i have not even unpacked!! I got loads of stuff, stuff you could not even get now. I had the frame powder coated, and the wheels too, complete with new Continental tyres, and VERY nice they look too. New brake discs as well, proper Grimeca ones; Should have rebuilt it years ago!!!

Hello, and welcome back to the K side. You might have forgotten how nice the RS is to ride kilometer after kilometer. Another very good reason (aside from the small fortune in new bits) to put the old girl back together. This forum is an excellent resource for guidance, and support. Glad to have you.

Years ago i went to southampton and back on it, about a 260 mile round trip on it. When i got back i was bored, so i went for another ride, so yes, a K100 is comfy!! I used to have a Honda CB500, and it went very well, but the gearbox was SOOOOOO clunky, and the thing was VERY uncomfortable, about 100 miles and ones rear end was seriously hurting... Then again, a few months ago i went a 365 mile round trip on my Yamaha 125 no trouble at all, despite the wind being that bad, that in places i could only do 45MPH on the motorway!!!

I think there is more than 2 weeks rebuilding that but wow that will be like a brand new K! New block and pistons is very rare. Are you sure you need to use them??? But powdercoated frame and nice new looking parts is great.

Sad to say if those tyres are hanging around 6 or 7 years not really recommended to use them over 5 years old.

Keep us posted.

Hi There,

When it comes to the tyres, they have been kept in the cool and dark, so they will be ok!! I needed the block and pistons as the chrome had dissolved from the aluminium. This is a very common problem that BMW would like to pretend never happened. They had TERRIBLE problems with a LOAD of their car engines that all had to be recalled. Jaguar had the same problem. It was caused by high levels of sulphur in the petrol at the time. The chrome was literally just gone!! leaving bare aluminium. I have the photos here that i could post if i knew how..

john..

Haeremai, welcome John as we say we say in K Iwi land mate. Get ya K running, is there much bung with it mate ? whats the mileage and year. A mate of mine is going brick racing, brought an RS 16Valve and has stripped the guts he doesn't need, fan, lights etc and fitted wider wheels fork brace and going classic racing, looks good too. Hopefully I may score some surplus bits to store, fan etc. There is quite a difference between the 8 and 16 valvers, happy with me old 8 valve RT though gad an eye on an 02 1200 LT ? they seam well sorted the last of em too.
Lets see some pics of the rebuild, heaps of help here.

john..

I agree about the bores...Nikasil problems were very bad in their car engines. BMW are not the only ones trying to pretend trouble never happened....

I also agree about the tyres being kept in good storage but over we now have a situation where car tyres over a certain age are not being allowed pass NCT [MOT]. I am not sure if you have a similar age rule. Just have a check on what manufacture date is showing on them.

Best of luck with the rebuild too, it will be worth it.
