Having not used the LT for a month, decided as its the longest day, give it a treat and go to work on it. Zooms up to ninety sweet as a nut. OH NO IT DOES'NT! Those blasted vibrating handlebars really spoil the experience. Now I have read of larger bar end weight, removing them, fill the bars with various substances etc. but all seem to have no effect. Now my particular machine seems smooth in all other areas, so my question is, has anyone tried doing away with the rubber mountings for the handle bars and rigidly mounted them? John

Yes. There are posts elsewhere in the forum suggesting that an upper triple tree bracket from a K75 can be substituted as it apparently has no rubber isolators for the bars. The K75 is inherently smoother that the 100.
I would guess that removing the rubber isolators might make the vibes more pronounced, not less, but I would have thought the same about the early footpeg brackets but BMW seems to have proven me wrong, by mounting the newer footpeg brackets solid as you suggest with the bars.
Personally I have not tried filling the bars with lead pellets nor have I any bar end weights.
I have been riding 85 K100's (reported to be more vibration than newer ones) for years and I guess I've learned to live with the Buzz by just varying to a different speed where the harmonics differ.
I use foam rubber grips and gel pads in the palms of my gloves. I find it tolerable but I do still have buzzy hands after I get off.

Hi, month and half ago I mounted hard upper triple clamp on my old k 100 in rt trim. So far, everything is better, no vibes, better, more direct response in curves and no fear of bolts in rubber mounts break. So full reccomendations on that change. But before tune engine properly, adjust steering head bearing, etc.

Both statements are correct. This is a K75 top yoke with solid handlebar mountings:

OK. The quick and easy option for me is to replace the rubber insert with something made from steel or aluminium ( I have a lathe). Are the inserts two top hat shapes pressed in from top and bottom or is it a one piece part? John

You can make the inserts, but that will not prevent the other failure reported as the through bolts breaking off.

I haven't tried it myself, but I read somewhere that if you remove the bar end weights altogether it reduces the vibration. I just buy the foam grips. Only last 2-3 years but only $5 a pair.

I renewed the mount rubbers last month and vibrartion vanished. I read somewhere that after 24 years the originals loose effectiveness.
I read somewhere too that its worthwhile renewing the alternator bushes too, as these create noise after time - has anyone experienced this?

The alternator cush-drive rubbers will harden over time. Oddly, they don't seem prone to breaking up on the four cylinder bikes in quite the same way as they do on the triples.
