Morning all, I've just joined and have recently bought a 1990 K100 RS 16V project to get me touring to France this summer. It runs, but needs the master seals, calipers refurbished, a new set of tyres & pads, a complete service and spline lube and the tank repainting. A lot of work, but hopefully at the end I'll have a keeper. I've never had a BMW before and currently have a 1999 Honda Varadero 1000 and a Yamaha TTR 250. I'm a bit stuckon what to do with the frame at the moment? It needs a good rub down and paint, but it looks like a major job to get it off and powder coat it? was thinking of rubbing it down and painting with it still attached? Anyway I hope you don't mind all the questions that are going to come!

Cheers Mud1

welcome aboard mud ....

lets hope you have a fun time in the refurbishment

they are a great bike to ride ... ifn you get most things right

i suggest ...get the safety issues and lubrications sorted then go for a good ride you will start to appreciate the "k" ...many here have had to do something about the suspension ...after all these years

it takes time though ...

btw a good set of tyres is often the key to the bike feeling good on the road

enjoy !

Wow that was quick! I guess this is a popular forum! Thanks for the advice re the safety stuff, I'll look at that first. Am I right in thinking that the 16v K runs modern tyres or is it worth looking out for a set of k1100 wheels? Also can ayone recommend a tyre and size that's well proven please? Thanks in advance.

Giday mud1 welcome to the forum.
If you have tech questions use the tech threads because some here dont come here so it could be wasted typing.
Anyway to answer your question re wheels you have the good wheels on a 16v RS so when you're on a good thing stick to it.
I run michilin Pilot road 2 and they are great, quite a few use perilli sport demon and find them good but as Charlie said Tyres are the key to a K

Hi Mud1 and welcome too. You will find the K great, as is said tyres [and tyre pressure] are key.

I got my K 3 years ago and it needed a few things so got them all done before riding it, rear master cylinder, clutch cable, full service and all new filters, all new oils, then just used it and got to know it.

Given that you are now into good weather I would be more inclined to get it into use, do the immediate tasks now, you will probably meet up with some others from here as we and the guys down under do, a very positive life changing experience. Without this site and the knowledge the K would be a frustrating bike but what you learn here is that in fact its very easy to work on and there is a wealth of knowledge and spares out there.

Frame paint will keep till winter....

Greetings Mud1. I personally recommend the pirelli sport Demons they transfowmed my riding experience and confidence on the K. Use the google forum search box for a thread called "new tyre time" (may be spelt tire, can't remeber). I also "cheated" with the frame, I basically rubbed down and masked off all Icould then hit it with some Pasticote satin black, very acceptable stop gap till I decide to do the full stripdown. Good to have you along - post a few pics as soon as you can.
