After not riding for 2 & 1/2 years, get back on the road and get pulled over
But it was all good he just wanted to check my Log Book (for Historic BIkes)

I have never had anyone check my log book. Even when I was involved in an accident the NSW police didn't check.
Amazingly the insurance paid out the claims without proof I was using the bike legally

In the Haawkesbury we have a few people join a club just to get cheap rego then go riding whenever they feel like it without filling out the Log book.

You only need to register a historic vehicle once during ownership but as a member of a recognized motor club, and you can only ride it for a specified number of days per year for specified reasons. Each trip itinerary and duration must be recorded so authorities can determine if you're staying on the program. If the trip starts in the middle of one day then ends in the middle of the next day, it counts as two days. Scofflaws love this kind of stuff.

Based on anecdotes here, enforcement seems to be spotty. It might be mood-dependent on the leo.

I am curious as to what is the financial gain for historic bikes then?

For us here our annual road tax goes from €88 to €26 but most of us here don't bother to go for classic insurance, our multi bike policies seem to charge €30 per bike for the second and subsequent bikes.

I'm on a classic insurance policy but the mileage is unlimited. Olaf: we don't talk about vehicle excise duty a.k.a road tax up here. I should have stopped paying it last year, but the Idiots On The Hill...

It seems some what more straight forward in British Columbia, Canada. Although are motorcycle insurance rates are seem very high to me we do have the Collector Plate program which allows anyone with a limited production or over 25 year old vehicle to apply.

The bike needs to be basically stock and in good condition. You send in some photos and if approved the cost of basic insurance, excluding collision. fire, theft or vandalism goes from about $100 a month to $20 a month.

The bike can only be used for pleasure and you must have another vehicle registered in your name. You can drive it when ever and where ever you like.

This program has lead to the price of 25 year old bikes rising.

I just renewed my insurance, €348 annual for all 4 Ks, mileage isn't limited but I declared 40,000km annual....., plus I have full use in connection with my business and also for towing.

In Victoria, Australia, about four years ago, I got historic registration, which reduced my compulsory on road costs from $500/year to under $100. Rego includes compulsory third party insurance here. I can ride any day for non commercial reasons, max 90 days, but I normally pay for 45.

About five years ago I typed in eBay, 26 year old motorbikes/ nearest to me, up popped a k100. I was outbid. That was the first time, and only reason I could think of, to consider a BMW. I now know of a lot more reasons they are worth considering.

By the way, never been asked for my log book, even though I done my license once for speeding. And yep, each day I ride I enter "riding day" in the purpose cloumn. Artistic license is optional.

The only other columns to fill in are; date, name of driver, signature of driver.

I have thought about historic rego for my bike.
From what I understand it involves joining a club that's approved for historical vehicles has to be inspected by someone in the club & a letter of approvel by the club proving the vehicle is of historic value?
I think a 1988 K100RS,SE with ABS might just qualify now.

Historic rego won't let me get milk.

In NSW, Oz, my K75 costs about $400 per year for registration and compulsory third party personal insurance and the annual inspection fee. Comprehensive insurance is another $200 per year. Unlimited use, of course.

My two historic registered K100RTs cost $50 each for registration, and $100 each for comprehensive insurance. (Registration $100 for the first year, as you have to pay for the plates.) I can use them for club rides, and an extra 60 days per year, logged, for any purpose I want except for going to work or for business. No problem, as I am retired.

To be eligible for historic rego, I have to be a member of an approved club. $20 per year, no limit on number of bikes!

I have 120 days riding per year on historic, before I add any other bikes to my registered collection. This greatly exceeds the number of days I use the historics, so its a no-brainer. And I still have the K75 any time I want, as its not old enough for historic rego. (30 years). When it gets old enough, it will go to historic too, giving me 180 days per year.

Historic registration works for me, though I do dream of having a nearly new BMW with modern bells and whistles for variety, when my ship comes in. (Pity I don't have any ships out.  )

Until I got my bus pass, Low Flying Brick was racking up around 15,000 miles a year, of which 11,000 were commuting to work five days a week.

My copy of Babelfish translated that as, If you want to ride your feckin relic on the road like everybody else, you're going to be paying as much as everybody else, you feckin cheapsake; otherwise, you can just trot around with it a few months a year with the government's leash around your neck.

Well that was short lived. I'm not allowed to ride or drive for the next 5 weeks.
