Been lurking for a while and finally decided to register, when I saw the introduction from Ringfad.

It certainly is a small world. What originated as a request to borrow a size 10 ring spanner from a visiting computer repairman, turned into a purchase of a '87 K100 RS SE. Then about 20 years later, run into him on a K100 forum.

Anyway, after many miles on the K, sold it after being rear-ended. Always sorry I did that, it was one of the two bikes I'm sorry I sold (the other being an XT350).

Like most K owners, I couldn't stay away forever, and picked up a 87K100RS in blue. I've had it for 12 years and due to marriage, house purchase, house sale and further house purchase, and boat building, it hasn't been used much in recent years. Once Irene, my wife, discovered how many pairs of shoes fit into a car boot, she wasn't too keen on taking the bike anymore. That has changed recently and she is now game again for bike holidays.

My other bike is a transalp 700. Absolutely love the bike, but Irene isn't interested. She prefers the comfort of the K. Strangely I love the V-twin, but have no interest in BMW boxers. I dallied for a while with a R80GS, but it was like riding a water buffalo. Sold it soon afterwards and picked up a VFR750 (nice but bland). Sold that to buy the second K100RS

At the moment the K is sitting in my dads shed, awaiting a full overhaul. This is detailed on a diffent thread.

Looking forwards to lots of fun on the forum.

Welcome to Forum - I also have very fond memories of that original K100 RS SE you puchased - the longest trip I did on it was to St. Tropez doing 970 miles in one day (I was younger then). You need to get that K100 you have on the road and we can then meet up.

Yep, her record is 7 pairs for one weekend (with outfits to match of course) Rolling Eyes

Cant complain though, she is very low maintenance, and lets me ride bikes, and kayak, and go sailing, and build boats, and go to the pub, without undue grief.

What sort of boat are you building. I built a 34ft steel sloop about 30 years ago.

Welcome Corkboy....

As for boat building, we know the Cork Buoy very well indeed...

I am also in Cork and in town most days....I also use the K most days so feel free to give me a PM. I dont as yet have a huge stock of parts but do have the Clymer manual and reasonably familiar with some of the simpler parts of the K bike. Jimmy Ellis is also well familiar with them.

We have quite an active forum now, also have another current R but potential K owner in Killeagh, another K in Tralee and of course HoverK100. I did also meet someone last week, was in a room and commented on a nice chrome wheel.....led to a revelation that he was a K owner hiding in the woodwork. I have also recently met someone who has two K75 tucked away.

Elsewhere you will see we are planning to meet up on Saturday 29th December, weather permitting, at Stradbally Fayre for brunch n run. Its a nice run up up the M8 to Abbeyleix exit 3 and then right at the Y at the top of Abbeyleix for Stradbally. Maybe that is incentive to get you back on the road quickly.

I built a 17' Weekender gaff rigged sloop (by Stevensons designs) a few years ago. Plywood with a fiberglass skin.

At the moment I am building a 21' plywood catamaran by Woods designs. unfortunately my shed/boatshop is so small I have to move the bikes out when I am building the hulls (one at a time). That's why the K is in my dads garage.

This might be a "gotcha" when suggesting that I buy another bike, as I have to complete the first hull and then move it out of the shed to start the second one.Crying or Very sad

You need to talk to HoverK100. He has managed to overcome that conflict between bike and boat.

Interestingly too...my sons bike resides in my garage...where it undergoes miraculous oil changes etc etc

Is your bike normally parked in Opera Lane?

And don't talk to me about Jimmy Ellis Razz, we go back a long way in the BMW club, and dropping him in chips from Lennoxs when I called into the garage/social club that was Ellis motorcycles.

I still remember when he swore blind that a (Mini-Thatch) run wouldn't involve any off-road work, even as we headed down a dry river bed. me on a K100Rs and him on his GS. Shocked

You've got me thinking now about the bike. Pop in a battery and it would be good to go. Might make Stradbally .

Jimmy and myself go back to the early Honda CB500-4 and dropping into his workshop after work for cups of tea and the occasional foray to Dublin where my mother would feed us and some other Cork based 500-4 owners up like we were starved. He ran a workshop/social club then tooNew Member 3825131407 ..... and there seems to a theme of mothers feeding him up too New Member 292303. Then we were neighbours for a while and I used take a lift to town with him some mornings instead of using the car. He had a nice soft top then New Member 3069720389. Wonder would he do Stradbally on that lovely R69....Now, you have to do Stradbally!!!New Member 2410925020

Opera Lane is not mine so you have just found another K bike member there....unless its Avenger GT? Its not Bjorn either, his is a GS and temporarily indisposed after a mild and unintended off road incident up north New Member 1910896369.

Great intro Corkboy. Most of us of the married class can relate to the shoe issue! To quote intrepid traveller and forum member Two Wheels Better "panniers can't hold all you want but they can hold all you need".

I look forward to meeting to chat bikes'n'boats.

Hi Corkboy

Take a look in the Gallery - picture of that Black K100RS SE is now posted - My First K - this was taken before I fitted the Motad exhaust but apart from that was exactly what you puchased from me.

Or mayby thats the 12 year old Jameson that's having an effect. Life is tuf I know.

One of the two bikes I'm sorry I sold. It replaced an ageing Seca 750 and was a revelation in what a bike could be.

Still, will get the 87 K100 RS on the road and see you in Stradbally.

Had a chat with Jimmy, our local friendly BMW mechanic. Top bloke, works from home, and is very accomodating. He said to drop over and pick up a spare battery so I can get the bike to him.

I put the new battery in on Sunday, did a once-over and pushed the starter. Whirring away nicely. I thought it was a bit heavy to push backwards out of the shed. Of course the back tyre was flat (should have guessed that). i hadn't the foresight to bring a pump with me but managed to borrow one from a neighbour.

I drove out the Jimmys place. Initially the bike felt heavy and strange, after the Transalp. But after a mile or so it all came back to me. That Remus just kept asking for more, and there was more available Smile

When I arrived Jimmy said "you fell in love with the bike again" You said it!

Jimmy rang today with an update. Some bolts had to be drilled out as they were rusted beyond redemption. I also asked him to change the fluids etc. while he had the bike, so the final list will be

  • replace oil and gearbox seals (and o-ring).
  • replace clutch plate and springs
  • Lube splines (while he's in there)
  • Change oil and filter
  • Change gearbox oil
  • Change final drive oil
  • Change brake fluid
  • Replace rear brake disk (I had one at home but hadn't gotten around to changing it).
  • Replace rear brake pads (because of new disk).
  • He is replacing all exhaust/manifold nuts and bolts (well rusty!).
  • New battery

I know I could do the fluids myself, but while he has the bike it's worth it to get him to do the work. He probably gets the fluids cheaper, and his labour is very reasonable. All in all, theres not much difference in the cost, and I don't have the bother of getting everything, and disposing of the old stuff.

And the funny thing, I told Irene that I was dropping the bike over last Sunday, and she said "you are doing it before Christmas". Oops I thought, that doesn't sound good. She asked how much, and when I told her (cringe), she said, "that sounds OK" cheers , which was not the answer I was expecting!.

And I also said (in my best altruistic voice) "I thought it would be a good idea to get the money to him before Christmas". I can be so kind to my fellow man at times What a Face

Anyway, when I get it back this weekend I must take some pictures and go for a blast. Maybe she'll join me ❤

Corkboy.

"Tús maith, leath na hoibre."

I reckon your right to let him at it for what you'd save buying the fluids etc retail and you'll have the certainty of having it done by a pro.
