Just received in the post a rather shiny set of new OEM heated grips along with a great write up and diagrams... Just they are not as clear as I expected can I confirm that I need to drill a 10mm hole in the bottom of my existing handlebars? (Makes sense to me as that way any water getting in will flow out... for some reason it says on the RS to drill the hole on the top... so not sure about whats going on there....

I just need to whip the bar weights off tomorrow and go for a spin just to check that I don't suffer from the dreaded high speed vibration... If I do I need to see if I can swap the grips for the one's which can take bar weights.... unless someone knows if I can just cut the end of the rubber of of these without damaging the wiring....

Peer down the end to see where the wires come out. This is the RT version, for bar end weights, and there is, I think, a cutout at the end of the bars to clear the wires. I've just looked at some old closed end RS grips and the wires come out near the middle so I don't think it would be easy to fit end weights.

I've just bought this pair of NOS grips off e-bay.

Thanks for that Paul.... Not sure why I didn't think of looking down the grips! With the help of a torch I can now see that the connection is made at the end on these ones!
In my defence I had been on nights last night so am suffering from a spot of sleep deprivation!

So that rules out that idea.... Onto the second plan which is to whip the weights off and see how the bike feels without them. I am guessing that it will only take a quick blast to work out if there is vibration. Luckily for me I have a dual carriageway just a couple of mins ride away so will make an ideal test ride.

I put OEM grips on my RS earlier this year, and had to drill the hole as well. I would recommend not drilling dead center bottom, because it makes the wires hard to make the corner. If found the 10mm (1/4") hole to small to fish the second wire through. You might want to make it a little bigger, and drill 'forward' of the plumb vertical to easy the trauma on the wiring. Am I making any sense?

That does make sense to me.... I am thinking that an elongated hole may make it a bit easier. Def better when other's are able to pass on advice

I used Weedeater/line trimmer line to fish the wires. Fished the line from the hole out the end of a handle, taped the wire to the line (very well) and pulled back through. The first one was easy but the second one was a pain- less room at the hole.

I have got the grips installed and all is working as it should do! Cold hands are going to be a thing of the past.....

I had a spare bit of wire around that I fed the same as you Club_c not to hard to do so all is good....





The hole that is in the top right hand corner looks like it has been pressed out for a reason what would it be? I also decided to put the fog light switch back in place as well.... Tidies it up that way....

Now onto the ABS.....

ABS all sorted now as well

Which leaves me with a couple of jobs left to do... Fan motor replacement (New one should be here at the end of the week and check the CO level......

Good work twincarb. I'd love to do a set on mine but I've ridden it without the endweights and really noticed the difference.

I took her for a spin this morning and all seemed well, I think the real proof will be on saturday when I ride to work.... 70 mile trip fingers crossed all will be ok.

It maybe worth speaking to motorworks where I got the kit from and see if they are able to produce one with endweight. They sell the grips for endweights on there own so I would have thought it was possible.

I think that long term I if either of the grips packs in I may "upgrade" to the version with endweights although it would need some attention to be paid to where the bar would need cutting to facilitate the cable.

Yes twincarb, I milled a slot 8mm x 20mm (but then I would, wouldn't I) and used bicycle gear change wire to feed thro' the bars.
