Hello ,
I noticed after long ride on Sat last there was a slight oil seep on the right side along the engine /gearbox
seam. Is it something to worry about ?

I could be wrong but suspect a seal or gasket requiring splitting engine and gearbox, except as far as I know clutch is in between...., but check first in case its coming from somewhere else.

Can you put up photo? IngeK and CrazyFrog are really great with advice here.

Can you identify if it's coming from the inside out?

There is a little breather hole at the bottom of the bellhousing which will let out leaking oil from the case. There are two seals in the bellhousing. The engine outputshaft seal and the gearbox input shaft seal. The engine seal, if blown could contaminate the clutch. The geabox seal can too but it's less likely to happen as quickly.

Clean off the area under the bell housing so that you can identify fresh leaks and observe for a couple of days. Burnt oil is coming from the engine side and Gear oil from the box side (The gear oil has a sweet smell and should be clearer).

A pic might help.

There are several places that leak oil round there. The rear engine main shaft seal which will leak engine oil and the O ring in the centre of the clutch carrier which also is engine oil or the front seal of the gearbox which of course will leak gearbox oil. Smell the oil and then take the bung from the filler on the gearbox and smell it that way if the smell is the same its gearbox and if not its engine.
Either way the gearbox needs to be removed and the seal replaced along with the O ring. Regardless of weather its the rear main seal or O ring replace both as if one leaks the other will do so very soon if not as soon as you start riding again.
The cost of doing the job yourself is probably only $50 - $100 but add 6 hours labour if you get a workshop to do it
Take advantage of the need to disassemble and do a spline lube at the same time.

Great and interesting replies as usual, I will have a peruse of the workshop manual to identify exactly what I'm looking at and hopefully will get a pic tomorrow during daylight, and maybe it wont be as awkward /time consuming a repair as doing the crankshaft seal on my Defender ;-)

Something for the long winter nights possibly...

You'll be in good company Rod. My gearbox input seal has been leaking since early summer. It's a tiny amount about half a teaspoon under the bike when I park it up warm after riding. I'll be stripping the back end of mine and doing the seals and clutch spline lube but can't get to it for a few weeks due to work commitments.
