I have an 85 K100Rt thats goin naked.Has anyone tried taking the paint down to the alum.,and then somehow shined it up.I think the gas tank would look great like that.

I stripped mine all the way back when I got mine resprayed... it would take a lot of effort to get it shinny you wouldn't want to use to course a paper on it... a chemical stripper may get the worst of it off.... followed by lots of sanding getting finer and finer untill you cut it with a polish..... lots of work

Another consideration is you would want to keep it shiny, which gives 2 options.... a clear coat lacquer (which prob would need a slight key for it to stick)

or lots of cleaning to remove any oxidization that occurs......

This is a bike I bought that already had what you are asking. Stripping the paint is easy. Then I guess you would just buff it up. You need a perfect tank. Any small marks really show up. Would I do it? No. Did it look good? It was not bad, but a colour would have been nicer. I guess it depends on the look you are going for.

Thankyou,the paint has already been stripped chemically and I have been sanding it down with a palm sander and course buff pads.Just wondering if anyone has done it and what happens to the finish if not sealed ? Also I have not worked with painting metal parts before...its always been wood working for me.

Aluminium will oxidise rapidly if it is not sealed. Options are a clear lacquer which must be petrol and probably ethanol resistant, or a natural anodized finish. The polished alumnium is nice but you will have to keep it indoors and dry when not in use. Could be useful to keep two petrol tanks. Due to some electrical problems my tank is now a quick release with minimal removal of fairing parts to take it off.

I don't know what you're planning, but the old english style of chromed and painted finish is allways a beauty. You can polish it and then clear coat it, there is a thread in here from last week about clear coating the swing arm it looked great, so a polished tank wouls also. so would a combo of colour and polish

Evan wilcox did an all aluminum k100 years ago and he had the stock tank bare and polished. I just saw that bike at an MOA rally and it still looks great. If you goggle Evan Wilcox you can see the k100 on his web page.

By "polished",do you mean he put a clear coat over the bare alum.?

Thanks for the "Heads Up".The funny part is I was wracking my brain about reading a post from a guy on the big island doing a polishing job on his K.This is the thread I read back in 2010.I even posted a response that I can't wait to see the job done...in 2012.

Just noticed this post, I just stripped my K75 tank to aluminum for repaint and considered leaving it bare but did not. If you do it will need to be polished(I used 0000 steel wool to see what it would look like-great) and then used a clear coat product from Automotive Touchup Supply that is a 2 part epoxy paint in a spray can(respirator needed).
It dried hard as a rock and is gas and oil impervious.

I did not notice any smell with the respirator on but while painting in the garage my wife came out and said: Great!! now the whole house smells like the garage, so it's pretty foul stuff.
