when i'm riding, the air coming off my engine around the inside of my fairing gets screaming hot
my idiot light doesn't come on on the control panel and there seems to be plenty of coolant in the reservoir
is this a common issue?
it almost gets too hot to leave my legs tucked into the fairing
which would be great in the winter time (though i haven't figured out how to deal with ice/snow on the wind screen)

You dont say which model. I have a 92 LT and it has baffles inside the faiting to deflect the heat out the side vents. It is entirely possible these baffles are missing. There is a horizontal one at the the line at the base of the petrol tank which closes the gap between the petrol tank and the fairing, its under the storage boxes. There is also an almost vertical one behind the knee pads and this fits into the horozintal one to close the gap. You need to check are they in place. After that I am not sure what to do, they do run hot and I found mine hot today.

This also is a continuing source of annoyance but can be solved by being very careful about placing the factory heat baffles (which are often missing) where they should be and placing more.
Some riders take the lower parts of the fairing off during summer.

it's an 85 RT
all the inner factory baffles are missing
i've managed to find the final piece of fairing (lies horizontally under the headlight)
the other stuff might not happen any time soon
the lower part of the fairing was off when i got it
i put it back on to see if it cooled things down
that didn't help
i'll have to keep my eyes open
thanks for the advice
