Only just now pulled off the System Cases on my new K'RS and found this:











...and here's the culprit:






What to do? I was fine with the Supertrapp Exhaust 'til I found this. Do I:

1.) Repair/reinforce the system case damage and fabricate some kind of heat shield on the case itself?

2.) Try to come up with a heatshield for the Supertrapp?

3.) Sell off the Supertrapp and purchase a stock muffler (hopefully with a working heatshield)?

Other ideas?

It is indeed pretty localized--and that may be a very simple, elegant solution.

What to repair the hole with, in the meantime I wonder? The hole is going to be a bit bigger because of the deformation. Should I lay in a piece of fiberglass mat or just find some plastic (and what kind of plastic)?

I would cement a layer of plastic in and cut the worst off from the outside before you put the isolation over it.

Hi there, I had a similar problem with mine, but with the original exhaust, the reason was and improper mounting, the exhaust was to close to lugage. Once the vertical distance between the exhaust and the lugage was corrected the problem dissapeared.
Guess you can do both, separate and isolate the lugage.

I think I would cut out the damaged plastic and screw an aluminium plate over the hole and seal it with mastic or silicon. Maybe then use another aluminium sheet spaced say 10mm as a heat shield on the bottom of the case.

The 'Supertrap' looks good, it would be a shame to change it for the stock heavy item.

As an aside, we lived in Spokane May 18, 1980, when St. Helens Blew--it really was an awesome display of nature's power and fury.

O.K. I happened to have some fiberglass and resin laying around, so I got a tube of hardener and a heat shield from the local Napa parts store.

Yes the bottom was pretty distorted, but I didn't want to cut too much off for fear of compromising the structural integrity of the case.



The heatshield has a fiberglass backing. It's rated to 2000 degrees radiant heat.





The heatshield installed. Won't actually see it when it's on the bike. At least not without trying :




When I checked the interior of the case after getting the bike up to temperature the patch was cool to the touch.

Neat repair, zaubertuba, and you can keep the Supertrap.

Years ago I installed a 3 in one racing exhaust on my suzuki GT750 (Yes it was very noisy)
At the time I also had a set of aluminum saddle bags.
One day I left for a week end and rode 800km on the highway. Being young and crazy, I didn't ride under 160km/h. When I arrived, all the plastic bags around my clothes were melted.

My point is that using aluminum for a heat shield will conduct heat unless you leave a good gap between the bag and the shield.
